Puppy Diahorrea - 10days so far!
« on: August 15, 2012, 06:57:39 PM »

Hi all I'm new to this, I bought a cocker puppy aged 15 weeks, 10 days ago....1st day he had diahorrea...starved him for 24 hours as advised by the kennels then put him on rice and chicken....on day 5 he started having blood in his poop! took him to vets who explained they think he isn't digesting the food enough and there for cells are coming on.  He was put on anti-biotics for 4 days and advised me to give him royal canin paediatric food!

Now day 10 and still diahorrea....no blood anymore but does anyone have any suggestions?????  Or has anyone experienced this???

Thanks

Amy

I would be back down the vet asking then to test a sample.

When you say you asked the kennel for advice, do you mean his breeder?

It isn't good for a baby to have diarrhoea for a prolonged length of time. They can dehydrate and become poorly very quickly.

Yes we had a similar experience with Bobby - blood in his stools and everything. I put it in a thread  :

It might not be the same thing but  - we got him sorted eventually but it was very persistent to shift.

Please go back to the vets and get them to do more tests.

I nearly lost Darwin at 12 weeks due to what started as puppy diarrhea.  He lost 1/3 of his body weight overnight!  His system was starting to shut down as he had stopped producing white blood cells.  It took 10 days before the Vets managed to identify the cause. - A micro micro organism that hadn't been killed of by worming.

It took over 6 weeks of TLC for him to recover.   6 meals a day.  egg, cottage cheese and food from the vet ( added - plus Prokolin )  Then on to chicken and rice etc before starting him on dry food again.

Sounds the same as Rolo. He has got colitis apparently. Weve just put him on Hills prescription food to try and settle it.
I would go back to the vet if the food isnt working!

Willow was really bad with a runny poops as a pup. Is your pup gaining weight? I think in this weather I would worry pup isnt dehydrating, did the vet check for this?

Willows in the end turned out to be colitis. We gave her a bland diet of chicken and rice, little and often and waited for her poops to firm up before re introducing her kibble again at a gradual basis. What are you currently feeding him on?

Pro kolin is a good thing to give to settle their tums, has the vet given you this? We got through so much of this when Willow was a pup, I dont know what I would have done without it.

I hope you pup is better soon, I know how worrying it can be !!

Panacur Pro is good for settling little tummies or Pro Kolin as said in the above post

What is your puppy fed on ?

Well things went from bad to worse......his diahorrea became terrible..couldn't make it through the night, kept pooing in his crate he couldn't keep anything down.

Went to vets with his 3 day poop sample, vet said he isn't growing as well as he should be and you can see all his ribs, poor mite, so...he is now on 2 more lots of anti-biotics and something to try to 'firm' his up a little.  Day 2 today and he seems much better...had a solid poop and the vets rang and said he has come back positive for giardia, which he is already being treated for.

So there is light at the end of the tunnel!  We are taking him on his 1st camping trip tomorrow so glad he seems better and more lively again.

Thanks for all your advice everyone...

Hi Amy,

Poor Bradley :'(. At least you've got a diagnosis now. I know there are a couple of people her on COL whose Cockers have had Giardiasis, so hopefully they will see this and have some good advice for you.

In the meantime, be very careful to clean up thoroughly as the Giardia cysts can live in the environment for months and are resistant to cold weather and water, so Bradley could become re-infected or other dogs could become infected.

I hope you all enjoy your camping trip, but be careful not to overdo it with Bradley's walks. Even if he was fit and well he should only be doing short walks at his age (about 5 minutes for every month of his life, so max. 15-20 minutes at a time) and as he's poorly he'll need more rest.

If you've got time, why don't you introduce yourself in the Introductions section on here and post that really sweet photo of Bradley sleeping with Toby :luv:

Elaine xx

Glad you have got some answers and he is on the road to recovery.

I know when Willow had a runny tum she was often tired and had less energy so take lots of books with you camping and chill around your tent  ;)

There is noting better than camping with your doglet, we are off ourselves in a few days  ;)

This thread about giardia should be helpful http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=89426.msg1328650#msg1328650

Think I posted that already higher up this thread but thanks Elaine. Yes, Bobby had giardia and it was really hard to get rid of - took several weeks and we went through times when we thought he would never get rid of it but we did eventually get him sorted out. He still doesn't have the same kind of bowel movements as Roxy though and he still seems to 'go' several times when on a walk but the vet told us that, particularly for a working cocker, that can be normal because they like to try to keep their bowel empty when they are working.

Good luck with Bradley and enjoy your camping trip  ;)
