i need advice please...help!!!!
« on: August 16, 2012, 09:03:27 PM »
noticed that my ebony (aged 3) had a small cut to the side if her face today, just under where her ear lays,...couldnt see it very clearly as there was dried blood, so decided to get her in the bath and give her a gentle rinse tonight...some water went down her ear that side and now she is going nuts, rubbing the ear, yelping, shaking. She such a good girl and has let me have a look but i wont touch as she seems in agony and i dont want to hurt her. The only thing i can see is a small lump inside the ear, im hoping a grass seed hasnt gone right in... :'(

Shall i wait till the morning to take her to the vets or shall i call them out now, even though they probably wont do anything till the morning anyway????

I also have some noroclav antibiotics here, which were left over, they are still in date....shall i start her on them or wait till shes seen the vet??.....what would you lot do?? is there anything i can do to relieve her pain???? at the minute shes cuddled in a blanket with me on the sofa, seems settled but every now and then shakes her head, wimpers, and looks very sorry for herself..

im not normally a panic pants, but i hate to see my babies in pain....

thanks lucy xx

Poor baby :(
I wouldn't give her the ABs - I have given left over rimadyl before now (anti inflammatory) but I'd be worried that the ABs weren't the right ones for the infection she may / may not have etc.

I think I'd ring the vet for some advice - my vet would possibly see and operate tonight if required and I guessing yours would too.
Alternatively if she's settled down then I'd be tempted to wait until the morning to take her, but would with hold food so that if she goes in tomorrow and needs anaesthetising she can be.
Hope she feels better soon x

I wouldn't use the ABs either. If he's settled a bit I too would be tempted to wait. If he does get more upset later you could always contact your emergencey vet then and ask for advice

I agree with Kelly. Don't give her antibiotics for anything other than that which they were originally given. I would also give the vet a wee call

yep....i know youre all right about the AB's, but i was clutching at straws to try and make her feel better as quick as possible.....Thank god for COL, theres always people there to make you see sense...

Have rung the Emergency Vet, he isnt at the surgery but he would come out if i considered it neccessary. At the minute she is asleep next to me, every 5-10 mins she wakes and shakes her head, but i can console her and she settles again, so im tempted to wait till the morning as i would rather she stay with me over night then in to the vets first thing in the morning and if she needs an op at least she should be home later in the day....she would hate to have to stay there overnight... :'(

What would you all do, am i putting my feelings before her discomfort????

I think it is probably reasonable to keep her comfy with you tonight and take her first thing in the morning. You've always got the option of calling the vet again in the night if you need to.

Hope she is ok x

Aww bless you but the antibiotics would take at least a day to kick in, even if they were the right ones. I know you want to make her well so I reckon just do what you are doing. Watch her and if she gets worse then call the vet again x

She has slept with me all night, a few episodes of head shaking but she wasn't distressed..... She is now hiding under my dressing table in the dressing room and she won't come out.....;-( I'm off for a quick shower and will be waiting at the vets with her when they open.... Wish me luck!!!
