Another grass seed casualty - an eruption
« on: August 17, 2012, 09:21:20 AM »
Poor old Marley has really been going through it lately  :'(
After suspecting a torn crucial ligament, arthritis was diagnosed  :'(
She had started on hydrotherapy to try to rebuild muscle mass but only managed to have two swims before the grass seed saga  >:(
I noticed she was licking her back paw a lot and after examining it, I found a clump of hair between her toes and inside that a large grass seed.  I was really pleased to have removed it.
A few days later I got the dogs out of the car and noticed a BIG open wound in Marley's hock.  Sitting in the wound was another MASSIVE grass seed.  >:D  It must have migrated from between her toes up to the hock and then erupted through her skin  :o
We went straight to the vets but the hole was so big (the size of an egg) that there wasn't enough skin left to pull together and stitch.  :o  The skin is quite tight round the hock.
So it was cleaned up, antibiotics given and now we have to go every 3 days to have the bandage changed.  The hole is slowly closing up but she is thoroughly fed up with the whole thing.
Hopefully after another week the dressing can come off and she can resume the hydrotherapy. :D
The photo shows how fed up she is with everything.
