my dog has not pooped for 38 hours, help!!!!!!
« on: August 18, 2012, 01:19:28 PM »
My dog had surgery on Thursday to remove a grass seed, he is now on antibiotics.
Could this be the reason he has not pooped for 38 hours [normally once or twice per day, no longer than 24 hours]
Every thing else is fine.
How long do you think I should wait before I check with the vet?

If he's drinking ok and peeing I think he's probably ok - seem to recall maggie going 2-3 days before pooing after one of her anaesthetics... but defo give your vet a call to put your mind at rest.

I think it could be due to the anaesthetic. Also, if your dog has been on any special food following the surgery that could have an effect too.

If he's otherwise well in himself I wouldn't worry too much, but agree with sarahR that phoning your vet for advice is a good idea.

thanks folks

Have just phoned vets and they have confirmed that it could be the anesthetic and antibiotics and he should be OK in 24 hrs but to phone back if I am worried.
He is due a check up on Monday morning.
They also said that because the dressing is on the back leg he might be finding it awkward to stoop and he would go when desperate.

That's good news :) Sometimes if they've had any opiate based meds when they've had an op that can also slow things down for a while. Fingers crossed he goes to the loo soon :)

He pooped late last night and normal poo which surprised me as when he was on antibiotics on two previous occasions he had diarrhea.
Fingers crossed we wont have that problem this time.

I just cant wait till he has his bandage of, hopefully tomorrow.
