Swollen and sore muzzle

My poor pupster Jenson has done something to his mouth but I have no idea what!

He was not himself this morning a bit quiet and has got worse over the morning then I noticed after a while that his muzzle is really swollen.  I tried to have a closer look but he will not let me near it and I feel pretty helpless.  At first I thought it was maybe an insect bite/allergic reaction but he is obviously in alot of pain, when I put his food down he whined and backed away from it looking terrified   :'(

Anyone have any idea what this could be caused by?  He is teething but this is a bit extreme.  We are off to the vets this evening with the first appt I could get but it seems so far away. 

We are supposed to be visiting family over the weekend too which includes lots of lovely walks and visits to the beach which he loves, hope we dont have to cancel it.

Sounds like a wasp sting, one of our pups got stung 2 days ago, around 4pm heard squealing coming from the garden & thought he had something stuck in his mouth but nothing, checked him over and was whimpering when I was touching his face, kept a check on him and by 8pm his right lip had swollen up, still managed to chew a bone mind  ;) by morning he was fine, completely back to normal.

Just keep a check that the swelling doesn't continue / airways are all ok  :blink:

Earlier in the day I'd seen a couple of wasps about, first time in donkeys! Wee blighters  >:D

Thanks hope it is just a wasp sting, will update after the vets visit later, so horrible to see them in pain  :'(

Hi

Back from visit to the vets, who thinks it was also likely a wasp or bee sting, gave him some antihistamine and the swelling has gone down already phew.

It wasnt cheap though, am I right in thinking I can just give him over the counter piriton instead?  What sort of dose would a cocker need.

After my trip to the vet today I'm thinking I should get hold of basic supplies of anti-inflammatories and antihistamines, plus some antiseptic cream. Would probably save a lot of money!

I gave Louis a 4mg Piriton tablet when one of his paws suddenly swelled up hugely a couple of weeks ago. I took him to the vet as well because I couldn't find any obvious cause for the swelling, although a sting seemed the most likely cause, and the vet gave me some more Piriton and some antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. The swelling disappeared as quickly as it had appeared so I'm pretty sure it was just a sting.

I keep Piriton at home and also in the car just in case one of the dogs is bitten by an adder. The advice from my vet is that Piriton may help with an adder bite and certainly won't harm.

Oh thanks for the helpful links :)

I agree though about carrying some of these meds around with me, honestly my vet bills are already scarily high!

My cat got her vaccs, flea treatment, deworming and some eye drops other day and it all came to over 90 smackeroonies!!! 

What we do for these pets  :luv:
