Undecided on flea prevention.
« on: September 01, 2012, 05:17:00 PM »
Riley is due soon, been usuing frontline spot on till now but Ive heard a few reports that its not as effective on some dogs.
My friends dog recently had mites but they had a fox in the garden so unsure if it came from something from that. He was on frontline.

Ive just been buying it on line etc no prescripion needed.
My Vet sells the frontline combo, to registered pets. Is this better? whats the difference?
Will the vet sell any others do you think? or will he be able to give me a prescripton,  The vet did recommend frontline way back but now after finding out there are two types Im unsure whether its the combo he was meaning.

Anyones dogs actually had fleas while on frontline and which one was it ? and after changing to what? has the dog no longer been affected.

Cat among pigeons time ph34r. I don't use any form of flea preventative/treatment on a regular basis, preferring not to use anything like that on my dogs unless necessary. I have Practic (bought from the vet) in the house but would only use it if I found a flea, or evidence of fleas, on the dogs, or if I knew they'd been in contact with a dog that already had a flea problem

William is mainly white so fleas are easy to see on him. It's more difficult with blue roan and tan Louis, but I have a good look every time I groom them as I'm always checking them for ticks (we walk in the New Forest and there are loads of ticks there). I think the last time I saw a flea on one of the dogs was a couple of years ago.

I'm not saying that I'm right, it's just my preference. I also keep a big can of the spray you use in the house if you get a flea infestation, just in case it's needed.

I appreciate your opinion Elaine , Thats the thing, Riley is blue roan and very very hairy. It would be like trying to spot a needle in a haystack, I do check him every day when brushing too.
Im quite new to all this. Our springer we had as a child never ever once had fleas in 14 years of having him.

When ever I have used Frontline is has been effective against fleas. I also Indorex the house a couple of times a year.
If you wanted something stronger to do worming and mites aswell, you could get Stronghold from your vets, this is also supposed to prevent infestations in the house as the product is shed with your pets dander :D
Advocate is another one that covers for more 'visitors' including lungworm :D
