Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI)
« on: October 18, 2012, 03:56:02 PM »
I've just received an alert email from the Animal Health Trust

quote
Hello

Seasonal canine illness to feature on BBC's Countryfile

We would like to inform you that the Animal Health Trust's investigation into seasonal canine illness (SCI) will feature on BBC's Countryfile this Sunday 21 October, with the programme on air from 18:20.

As part of his 'Investigates...' series, Tom Heap speaks with Dr. Richard Newton who is spearheading the AHT's investigation into SCI. Tom will also report from woodlands where suspected cases of SCI have recently been reported. If you are a dog owner who is still unsure about what SCI is, what the clinical signs are and how you can help our investigation into this mystery illness, please watch this episode.

You can watch it live on BBC1 on 21 October or when it becomes available on BBC iPlayer for the following week.

Will make for interesting viewing, although very worrying.

Thanks for the heads up :D. I have a feeling I'll be watching it, even though it's something I'd really rather not think about, but it's best to know the facts (not that much seems to be known) about this horrible killer.

I got that email too, and will be watching. It is a scary thing. We stopped at Sandringham last month whilst on holiday but didn't go into the woods. The whole thing is a mystery.

We stopped in Sandringham about 2 years ago and Lottie got really poorly. She was one of lucky ones who survived the illness.

Will defiantly be watching!

A friend of mine very nearly lost his working bitch to this - was touch & go for 3 days but she came through it OK - we are in Warwickshire.  Vets were brilliant but they couldn't say for certain that it was SCI but reported it just in case. Fortunately Poppy back to normal and ready for the beating season.

Thanks for bumping it, I'd thought it was on later like it used to be, so I would have missed it!

Yep I am watching and recording, as they have mentioned three woods in our area (Norfolk/Suffolk) and some of our dog club members are an active lot who like to get out and about...thought I could put it on DVD for anyone interested who missed it.
Remembering Smudge 23/11/2006 - 3/8/2013, Branston 30/8/14 - 28/10/22, and Minstrel 24/6/13 - 13/8/24 all now at the Bridge.

Yes, the harvest mite could be responsible but let's hope their research proves conclusively before long.  They say don't panic and carry on with woodland walks but I'd be loathed to take my dog into any one of the woods currently affected.  I didn't realise the illness was so close to us - Sherwood Forest is quite near.  >:D
