Kennel Cough
« on: November 06, 2012, 10:37:20 AM »
Over Half-term Darwin was at the kennels, ( not our usual one ) they don't insist on the Kennel Cough vaccination, but Darwin always have the vaccination as the other kennels we use insist all dogs are vaccinated.

Whilst I was out this morning OH had a call from the kennels, to say that they've had a case(s) of kennel cough reported.

Will Darwin be protected?
If he gets it will be the a lesser version?
What are the symptoms?
What the best treatment?

He will be protected if the strain of KC matches the strains he was vaccinated against. He could still get it, but less serious. He would be coughing and sometimes sneezing and not feel well, much like when we have the flu.
There is no treatment as it's a virus. Vets give antibiotics to prevent secondary infections, but it is really just a matter to let the body deal with it. You can give stuff (like Benylin) to ease the cough and cold though.

I really wouldn't worry about it. A normal healthy dog gets over KC without any problems.

just to add a little reassurance, our Bella developed a bit of a cough, vet gave antibiotics and she was well within a few days (so it was probably not KC which, I understand lasts a lot longer) - anyway she didn't really 'suffer', the noise of the cough distressed us more than her ... hope all is well soon. Hmmm, sounds as if they need to change that policy...

Hopefully Darwin will be protected. Hopefully they also keep the affected dog away from the others.

why?  The KC vaccine does not protect against all strains and the virus mutates all the time.  Vaccinated dogs will still get KC  ;)
