Puddles + Rivers = Upset stomach?
« on: November 08, 2012, 10:05:00 PM »
There are alot of lakes, rivers and the like where I live so naturally wet dogs are a common sight around the village. However, I noticed Callie gets very runny after any walks involving water - not diarrhea as in she can't control it, just very loose. She doesn't seem upset by it, her appetite is certainly not affected, but is this usual - should I stop her from going in the water?

SOunds normal to me - the longer our walks or any time in water and Fred gets 'looser'.

Brilliant, it would really limit us if we had to avoid it. And yes, actually it's the same here - the longer the walk etc. Thanks!

We often get sloppy poos at the end of our walks, rest of the time nice firm poos, I put it down to increased metabolism with all the running around, but mine are in out of the canal river puddles mud etc so could be that

Thinking about it, the first day I had her I knew she hadn't been on any water walks for a while, and they were very solid. So I guess that could be it.

Annie's poos become softer as a walk progresses - she is very energetic and zooms around all over the place, and after half an hour or so her poos become "toothpaste". It doesn't seem to have any connection to whether she goes in water or not though  :dunno:

Hmm, maybe it's just exercise then  :lol2: I'd never really considered dog poo before  :005: Makes it hard to clean up towards the end of a walk though.

It's adrenalin that causes the looser stools ....the more exercise the dog has, the more adrenaline in their system, hence it getting sloppier as their walks progress.  ;)

Fresh water, in general, has never given my lot any problems with upset tummies but salt water can .... Seaside trips can result in upset tums for some  :-\

Since reading this post I have been thinking, and Cupar`s poos also get sloppy by the end of a run......Just took particular notice today and 1st one solid then 2 toothpaste (as Jeff and Annie`s mum describes)  ph34r . What a subject  :020: but interesting all the same. Lindseyp your theory answers the question

When I see the state of Clover's tennis ball all covered in mud, and then see her roll around in muddy puddles, drinking from them, and then watch her jump into sheep and cow troughs and drink the water after she has stirred up all the debris from the bottom, I would not be surprised to see her with runny motions! However, we are quite lucky that she doesn't usually get affected, but I have noticed that her first poo of the afternoon, at the start of our walk, is always much softer and a different colour from her norm, which, in the garden, is always firm and a normal colour.....that's very interesting that adrenalin can cause looser motions, and certainly that theory makes sense - she does get very excited about her walkies and is very energetic on them, chasing after her tennis ball. Another cocker mystery solved!  :shades:
To know them is to love them.....
