Retained puppy teeth
« on: November 09, 2012, 09:57:03 AM »
Help please! Molly is 5 months and 3 days today and is teething. I have noticed that all four of her adult canine teeth are coming through but her baby ones are still firmly in place. The top adult canines have come through on the inside of her puppy ones. I am worried this will cause problems - am I being neurotic :-\ Should I take her to the vet? Any advice would be gratefully received please.

No, you're not being neurotic and yes,
take Molly :luv: to the Vet, they can give
you proper advice about maybe extracting
the deciduous retained teeth, clearly it's
not an emergency but personally I would
take her as soon as possible to prevent
problems arising

Our two pups did the same, the baby teeth may feel firm but give it a couple of days & they will have gone  :shades:

They look real odd, big white chunky adult teeth with tiny baby ones tucked behind, Id keep a check but Im sure they will soon disappear  :shades:

My parents pooch did the same thing with her fangs. They did come out but on of them snapped in half which obviously wasnt very nice, they were going to take her to the vets and they both came out fully.

My pup Cassie (21 weeks) has the same problem - adult canine teeth coming through on the inside of her baby teeth, which are still very firm. I think this has been very painful for her, especially the amount she has been biting lately, particularly the upper canines as these seem to be almost coming through the roof of her mouth! :'( I first noticed this at the begining of the week but the baby teeth show no signs of loosening, not even a wobble. She had no problems with any of her other teeth.
I have an appointment at the vets this afternoon at guess what time ... 2:30 (tooth hurty) :005: :005:. Honest that is the appointment time!! I'll see what he suggests?

Archie had this too. I was really worried so I popped in to the vet without an appt. and asked if I should bring him in. they said no, they will fall out, which they did! It took a while though so don't worry. The vet said to bring him in if he seemed to have any discomfort from them.

Thanks Archie Bean, did the teeth straighten out afterwards, I mean are they now in the correct place? Did it affect his bite at all? I was just wondering as the adult teeth seem quite far inside!

His teeth are now perfect. No problems at all. I'm sure the vet will put your mind at rest. When I was worried I did the dreaded Internet search and found all sorts of scare stories. I guess it can happen so best to be safe rather than just hope things work out, especially if little Molly seems bothered. Good luck, I shall be thinking of you at tooth hurty!

Maggie (one of my Bichons) retained her puppy teeth. I took her to the vet who advised to leave another month (she was then 9 months old) They did come out on their own ph34r

Thanks for all the advice. It certainly puts a Newbie's mind at rest knowing there are so many lovely helpful people on this forum.

Tipsy 252 -   (tooth hurty) oh that made me :rofl1: - my work colleagues thought I'd lost it!
I would be pleased to hear what Cassie's vet says as Molly's teeth also look like they are coming through the roof of her mouth. Poor thing has turned into a Cockerdile of note - I think she's really hurting  :'(

Ozzy held on to one of his puppy canines for ages after the adult tooth came through on the outside of the puppy tooth, which bent sideways and seemed glued to the roof of his mouth for about a week.  I kept flicking at it with my fingernail, and eventually it loosened enough to drop out of it's own accord.  It must have felt weird to him because he kept trying to chew at it as if it were a toffee stuck to the roof of his mouth! It was funny to watch though  :005:

Well back from the vets and all is well for the time being. :D Appears I might be worrying too much, but vet said keep an eye on them, it sometimes happens with canines as they can have quite long roots! If they are still not loose in a monthor so, go back and they will check again. If they need to be removed, they will do this under GA at the same time as she is spayed.
I definately have Munchaussens by Puppy!  :embarassed:
