How far to walk a puppy?
« on: November 12, 2012, 03:06:37 PM »
Hi,
This is my first post as I have just got an almost 6 month old cocker puppy  :luv:
She is our second cocker - the first one we had a few years ago and she was gorgeous but unfortunately died young of cancer. after she died we were too upset to get another cocker and got a rescue terrier instead. Our other old dog recently died and Minnie, the terrier, was lonely so a couple of weeks ago we decided to get another cocker and I'm glad we did. Skylar, our new one, is lovely- she is very smart and quick to learn which came as a pleasant surprise as our last cocker was beautiful but a bit dumb!
Anyway to get to my point I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how long walks should be for a 5 or 6 month old puppy as I usually get adult dogs. We live by the beach so that is where we have been walking and I've been sticking to 30/40 mins at a time so far. I used to take Minnie out for an hour or so walking continously (as opposed to saundering on the beach) but I thought that might be too much for Skylar at this age as I've heard before that you have to be careful not to do anything too strenous with little ones?
She is full of beans and the two dogs play like crazy together at home.

Hello and welcome to COL :D. Sorry to hear about your previous Cocker and your old dog :'(.

As a general rule of thumb puppies should be walked about 5 minutes for each month of their life, so for a 6 month old puppy about 30 minutes per walk, so 30/40 minutes sauntering on the beach (as opposed to the longer continuous walks you used to do with Minnie) should be fine for Skylar. The reason for limiting exercise is to avoid putting too much strain on developing limbs and joints as that could lead to problems in later life.

That's ok then we'll stick with what we are doing. I just thought I'd double check  :D
I'm a bit worried about her injuring herself playing rough and tumble with Minnie on our tiled floors but I think it'd be hard to stop them and as Minnie is only a 5kg terrier she doesn't tend to knock Skylar down too much

Also, make sure she doesn't jump onto things or go up and down stairs if you can avoid it, as that can put a strain on the joints too  ;)
