will have to get my tape measure out. I know Zac is HUGE.
I did notice when I went to a field trial the trial cockers were all weeny.I think smaller than the average working cocker. I also think that the show cockers I see at crufts are a lot smaller than most of the average pet show type cockers. Any one agree?

jarvis is particularly interested in the floss result....(he does have a 'thing' for leggy laydees so if she's taller, he won't mind toooo much :P)

Nope not really - you see quite a bit of variation at Crufts, same as anywhere so yes some will be at the smaller end of the size range but there are plenty of bigger Cockers to be seen at Crufts too. I see a lot of pet Cockers for grooming (mainly show-type) and again there is a range of sizes - some are tiny and some are huge with most "in between". Other things can also affect your perception of size - people who have seen Bayley, our foster Working Cocker, think he is very big but in fact he is only slightly taller than our show-type boy, Arran. Arran however has heavier bone and a bigger, deeper ribcage which means he weighs more than Bayley. Bayley looks so much bigger because he is leggier & has less feathering which emphasises this. With Cockers you can never generalise and say Working Cockers are always big and show-type Cockers are always small - there's too much variation in both types ;)
Jane
Edited to add Bayley & Arran's vital statistics :
Bayley: 16.5 inches tall, getting on for 19 inches long (from withers to base of tail)
Weight: 14 Kgs
Arran: 16" tall, about the same in length
Weight: 15.5 Kgs
I also think that the show cockers I see at crufts are a lot smaller than most of the average pet show type cockers. Any one agree?

Mmm, not sure; Molo is the same size as his sire/dame and they have both been to Crufts ;) If anything, his sire was a bit bigger :) Most of the puppies from "show" litters go to pet homes, so theoretically, there shouldn't be that much difference....... ;)
Grooming makes a huge difference though - I always think that cockers in show trim look as if they have tiny legs because all the feathering hides them  I think that clipping cockers makes them look bigger, too ;)
I have no idea how big Molo is - I'll try and get the tape measure out in the next few days
Ok - how the for-goodness-sake did you all get your dogs to stand still long enough to measure them?? I think I may need the aid of super glue

ermm...i think the question should be...is your tape measure after measuring the wiggliest wiggly thing in wiggly town still intact or is it in around 20 pieces?????
As I can see, there is no big difference in the size between working and show cockers ;)

it's interesting isn't it??? apart from a few big working cockers, there's not much difference between working cockers and shows (so far!!!!).
here you go sarahp! (best i could find...)dog measure linky (http://www.smalldogcarriers.net/info_measuredog.html)

In that case Daisy's measurements are
Length - 52cm
Height - 41cm
Weight - 14.7 kgs.
I thought Daisy was a tad on the podgy side - but reading this she seems pretty average (sorry Daise  )

OK, tried to get ben in the same position as the picture :D Not a chance! I think his measurements are
Height = 43cm (ish)
Length = 67cm (again ish)
Weight = 13.4 kilos (the scary bit was weighing myself first)
Ben looks really lean and leggy and huge compared to the show cockers we meet, he is more like a medium springer. He's almost 7 months - will he stop growing soon and just fill out?

Here are the measurements of my two working cockers
Spud aged 6
weight 19.1kg
Height 49½ cm
length 60 cm
Bailey aged 1
weight 16.7kg
height 45½cm
length 55 cm.
Spud is the largest cocker that I have owned, my old dog Murphy (working cocker)was smaller and his Mum and sisters were very small.

I have just measured Zac (in a fashion!) and he turns out much like Spud
he is age 3
weight approx 20kg!!!
height 48 1/2 cms
length 60cms
Unfortunately Jarvis, Floss was far too wiggley to get any idea but she is quite leggy and very slim. The complete opposite to Zac could do with a bit of meat on her bones!!! Also a lot shorter in length to Zac but she still has some growing to do I reckon.
Alfie is show and is
Length 52 cms
Height 41 cms
weight 14.7kg

Exactly the same as Daisy!! Does Alfie look about the right weight to you?? I'm a tad concerned that Daisy Dog is getting a little too well padded

You know Ive been getting worried about the weight of late as well
I think that because he was 13kgs for so long and really was skin and bone the extra is really noticable, but he was at the groomer yesterday and I asked her if she though he was fat and she said there wasnt a spare inch on him :) So right now Im leaving well alone. Hes 20 months now and I guess hes finished all his growing and this will be his adult build. He doesnt get loads of extras above his feed allowence so Im pretty sure Im not over feeding. I always noticed with my last boy that he always appeared bigger in the winter, probably the winter coat
  Billy is a show cocker and is 17" height and 22" length and is 19.6kgs
I have been worrying about his weight but this thread has highlighted than he is much bigger than the average cocker, therefore is bound to be heavier. I am continuing with the weight loss but don't think i'll be aiming towards the 14kg anymore

he's 'big-boned' jan (i've been using that excuse for myself for years....  ). i think this has been a really interesting topic - the sizes of both show's and working cocker's vary wildly, and billy is not enormous! i hope this has made you less worried about his size - when you can see a waist, and feel his ribs easily then he's the right weight.
i've got a scrawny teenager at the moment, all legs and kevin attitude - but i guess this is the growth spurt before the grown up 'filling out'. i don't think he'll be the traditional 'bigger than show cocker' working cocker, his parents are petite too.
Jarvis's measurements are
Weight- 20kg
Height- 46 cm
Length- 56 cm
He is not fat but very stocky and strong!
Emma and Jarvis

How strange that Jarvis and Billy are half brothers and that they are the same heavy <_< weight
I've tried to get answers to this before - when do they tend to stop growing?

I think Billy was about 9mths old when he stopped visually getting any bigger. I think I am right in saying 90% of their growing is done within the first six months, I'm sure Burns told me this <_<
Firebird (show) 14.5" 11.5 kg
bee (work) 14.5 " 15kg (v fat at the mo!!)
Stella (work) 15" 14kg
Rox (work) 15" 12 kg
Lucy (work) 14" 11kg
The late great Jaffa (work) 16" 17kg working weight, 18.5kg resting weight
Most boy pups I have bred (work) are roundabout the 15/16" height and 17/18kg weight

Holly

Height 15" 38cm ish
Length 18" 42cm ish

and are square shaped!!!

    Sorry that just really tickled me!!
Mich I hope you have read this!! See Bailey isn't fat!!! OKAY!!!!!!!!
Some cockers just weigh more than others, like us humans! I weigh more than you!!!! ha ha ha ha :)

Ha ha  thanks hun!!
Wise words - me?? Total fruit and nutcase!!
Och - bit of a winter depressive at the best of times and losing Jaffa really hit me hard. I was lucky if was on the PC once a week for a while but - on the up side got this book to finish writing database needing a huge input to update it, people to see, things to do etc etc..lack of time - anyone fancy trimming Firebird???? She is the hairy monster from the black lagoon at the mo - so much hair that my Dyson keeps blocking and it;s always gold hair that I extract with a screwdriver in lumps!! She;s so messy that I keep putting off starting her - so much for my plans of showing her in veteran.. :o

you have working cockers - 'why you need to be a fruit and nutcase' is chapter 1 in the owners manual!!! ...and as for winter....i'm a kiwi and still can't understand why winter is sooooooooo loooonnnngggg here (homesick for kiwi beaches at the moment as it's high summer out there!)
kirsten - i am so excited about your book - can i put myself on the order list NOW!!! Please please please!!!! :D
no point asking me to groom lady firebird! i specialise in woolly working cockers
p.s jaffa was a very special boy, and an enormous part of your life - i could see in your posts how hard his passing was for you....
