Title: I lost Fletch today - a totally out the blue 'illness'
Post by: Hel on January 01, 2007, 10:19:30 PM: Fletch, my 8 yo going on 2, cocker was fine on Thursday. On Friday evening, his tail was floppy and unresponsive and he couldn't sit down. I thought he'd broken his tail (he is a very active and waggy dog). I took him to the emergency vet who said he hadn't broken anything (and made it clear with all the manipulation he did to his tail and legs) but he did have damage to his lower spinal nerves. A test to his anal area showed only a tiny response. He was given steriods. At that point his back legs were only a bit wobbly.

Over the next couple of days, he got really bad. He tried to go outside to do everything, but it was obvious that his brain and body just weren't connecting. He was leaking urine constantly. He tries but is unable to empty his bowels. He lost the use of one leg and then the other went off. Today his back legs lost all feeling as the paralysis is moving up his back and he was really upset about the state he was in - soaked in urine despite my best effects.

From Friday evening with a seemingly broken tail, he has gone through paralysis of lower body which is moving upward and which is permant and has been pts.

The vet says it could be something simple as a bleed in the spinal cord due to an awkward landing off the bed.

I am so, so sorry to hear this; you must be devastated :'( I really don't know what to say, I am so shocked that this could happen so suddenly. It is utterly tragic and all my thoughts are with you.

You must be feeling devastated at the moment but I guess in time you may feel that at least Fletch was not suffering for long and though it is a terrible shock for you and very sudden, he was not in pain for a long time. Try and think of all the happy times you had with him and remember you did the best for him at the end. Take care of yourself and try not to feel too sad :-\

Losing a dog so quickly when you simply assume that a few trips to the vet will make them better is the most painfully shocking experience and something I never want to go through again :-\

I do have a slight idea as to how you are feeling and its horrid. I really am so so sorry. I know that everyones kind thoughts and support here helped me through. The shock will pass and ease slowly. There aren't many words that can help right now, but knowing that people are thinking of you I hope will help.

there was truly nothing you could do for fletch, your decision was the bravest and most loving thing to do for him so don't doubt or blame yourself.

it will take time to get over this so be easy on yourself

Take what little comfort you can from the fact that he was so loved and so well looked after, right up til the last.

My thoughts are with you at this sad time. Time is a healer, but the memory of fletch will never fade... He was your baby and he will be looking down protecting you always! :angel:

Harmy's been gone for over 2 months now, but I still burst into tears when I think of him...and that has happened in Tesco :o its horrible, but our love for our best friends is so deep and to lose them so quickly it is very hard to take on board. I am now starting to feel stronger, so hopefully am turning the corner, it has affected my work and college and I may have to take an extra year to qualify now,but the shock just knocked me over emotionally and physically.
I take comfort from the fact that I knew my family and I gave Harmy a pretty wonderful life and he adored us in return...and then I smile
