Title: Dog Poo in the garden..... What do YOU do with it? :)
Post by: Hurtwood Dogs on December 30, 2007, 10:48:37 PM
My last cocker had wonderful manners and tried very hard not to go in the garden, consequently not very much to clear up.

Dave and Storm........ another matter (lots of matter to be exact)

So, I need inspiration! When you all clear your gardens of land mines what exactly do you do with the fall out? So far I have poo bagged, flushed  ph34r (yes yes I know it's not allowed...now...) and buried, but none of these solutions seem particularly satisfactory or easy to implement. So, someone give me a ray of light on this decidedly dark and dismal topic please!

Urhm, we leave it where it lands  ph34r  Griffin does polite little poos that are nice and white and crumbly after a day and tehn they dissapear.  And tbh, our garden is so far from being "sorted out" that it wouldn't matter if I built a poo tower, no one would notice.

Just out of interest, why aren't you allowed to flush dog poo?  Sounds very sensible to me. ;)

We have a bin bag on the wall outside and it goes in there using a trowel then each week it gets taken to the tip with the recycling.

You can't flush due to the water companies not being able to irradicate certain bacteria and microbes which cause diseases so when it is flushed the disease gets into the water system. Not only our water but the water in rivers, ponds and lakes killing wildlife.

Oooooh, thanks. Never thought of that. There go my plans of teaching Griffin to use the toilet!  :005:

Does anyone use those dog toilet thingies? You bury part of it in a hole in the garden and tehres a bucket on top and I think you add various chemicals to help it dcompose. When our garden is "sorted out" it would be nice to have somewhere to dispose of it. Do they work or do they smell.

We lift the lid on the foul water manhole in our garden, chuck the days dumps in and flush it away with half a bucket of rain water from the water butt.

We have a small kids waste bucket with lid in the garden with a carrier bag in it.  We poop-a-scoop into that and tie and bin or take to the doggy pooh bins when it gets about 1/2 full.

We thought about a toilet thing you bury but were told not very good and useless for more than one dog.

We lift the lid on the foul water manhole in our garden, chuck the days dumps in and flush it away with half a bucket of rain water from the water butt.

This equates to flushing it which you shouldn't do as the water treatment plants which then brings this water back to our homes for drinking cannot get rid of the following diseases/bacteria which are present in the dog poo:

Cryptosporidium
Campylobacteriosis
Salmonella

We tried the dog loo but weren't impressed and also if you live near water ways you need to be careful for the above reasons also.

Nor did I until the paper was advertising a DVD with tips on how to make less waste and one of them was to flush dog poo, Mum knew you couldn't and got on to the water board who got onto the makers of the DVD (the council) and got it stopped.

The levels are not so high as to cause alarm it's just if people advocate doing it more and more waste will get into the system and therefore the level will grow. During chlorination of the water the bacteria don't all die. We always use a water filter (distillation membrane filter) to be sure.

Campylobacteriosis

Which I have had this year and can honestly say it gave me  the most excruciating pain i have ever experienced in my life!  So please don't flush !

We only use the sewer manhole which after treatment is discharged to the severn estuary, treated water from sewage treatment is not returned to homes as drinking water.

Cryptosporidium, Campylobacteriosis, Salmonella are bacteria that are also present in human waste.

After a quick search I am unable to find any guidance from our local water authority with regard to flushing dog poo via the sewer.
I would not flush the stuff down a storm or grey water drain.

Bagging & binning is an option but then it goes to landfill and will eventually leach into and contaminate the local water table which is a source of drinking water.

Dog poo composters are not really viable for more than one dog so that just leaves incineration.

...bag and bin it here too - when she does it in the garden, which is not very often tbh, she is another polite one like that  :D

However, I also have 4 indoor cats, with litter trays that are changed/emptied twice a day using supermarket bags, which also then go in the bin.  There is usually enough to fill a good 1 to 2 dustbins by the end of the week - my dustbin man doesnt talk to me, and if hes around when I am, I hide.....  ph34r....

It gets bagged in nappy bag which goes into a small bin (lined with bag) in the garden. When the main rubbish bag in our kitchen is changed about twice a week it gets added into that and put out in the wheely bin. So it goes out with the normal rubbish.

doG I hope the council's don't start charging by weight!  With Wilson around you can barely wheel our wheely bin round the front after 2 weeks worth of Dane poops in there!  I had a lovely suprise when Paisley our 11 week old cocker did her first poo!  So tiny!  I can get about 5 of hers in one bag!  Wilson sometimes needs two bags for one of his!!!  :o   ::)

depends on the local authority but most allow you to double bag it and put it out with their normal collection. Check with your Refuse Disposal office.

Doggy toilets are rubbish.

Tossing it into a field or leaving it to "dissappear" not good. While the substance may not be visible - all the nasties are very much still there. I find that quite disgusting tbh.

Mine gets scooped into a carrier bag then put into the local authority black bin bag and collected weekly. I wil also put my post or stuff with personal details on in the same carrier bag - that way if anyone wants to nick it - they have a very nasty way of finding it >:D

Does that apply to poos out on walks in woods etc then?  And if it is my field/hedge it is tossed into I don't see how anyone could object to that.  The village society here has advised people that it is more environmentally friendly to leave it if in a field or woods (not on the footpath obviously) as it will decompose naturally as with the poo of wild animals and saves millions of plastic bags of poo going into landfill  :shades:  I reckon Coco's poo probably has less nasties than the local foxes, badgers, rabbits, deer etc too :-\

If it's your land then you do what you want - but if it's public than its not good. :-\ For me it's about the fact that fox poo and rabbit poo belongs in fields etc - dog poo doesn't. And it's also about volume of the stuff.

How true it is I don't know but I do recall someone on here once posting that the toxins in dog poo can cause certain farm animals to abort - like I say - how true I don't know.

So I have a daily poo picking expedition in the garden!
I put a poo bag in a flower pot to hold it open then use another over my hand to pick up the deposits :P

Then pop the poo bag from my hand into the one including the poos and pop it in the wheelie bin :D

I know that's what they advocate in Windsor Great Park, as long as it is off the footpaths/walkways.
When we walked there last year we saw a pooh bag hung in a hedge -  what was the point :dunno:

It's the same at shows, especially the Champ shows, people get there, exercise the dogs and shove the pooh bag under the car, then later at the end of the day just drive off!   >:(

We bag it and take whatever we collect to the dog bin twice a day, theres a dog bin at the entrance to the heath which is accross the road so i don't have to walk far while carrying however many poo bags :D

In the summer i found our wheelie bin started to stink when we bagged and binned it and we tried the dog toilet in the garden and it was useless so for us it's easier to just take it to the dog bin!

At home, I bag it, pop it in a pedal-bin that we keep outside lined with a carrier bag and then take it to the local dog-poo bin once or twice a week.  The waste from these bins is incinerated (as it is considered the same as medical waste) not landfilled  :D

As for leaving poo in public spaces, the Forestry Commission has been promoting a "stick and flick" technique on their land for a couple of years for environmental reasons, and I am sure if it was damaging to their land they would not be asking dog owners to leave poo on their land - dog poo is no worse than fox poo, badger poo or even hedgehog poo; they are all carnivores too

Lets be honest, dogs don't "belong" anywhere - so neither does their poo; we have domesticated them in the same way as we have cows, sheep and horses - and all of those animals have been pooing in the countryside for generations...... ;)  As long as the poo is removed from the trafficked areas, then I agree with the Forestry Commission, the most environmentally friendly method is to allow it to degrade, not use plastics and fuel to dispose of it  ::)

What do you mean by "dog poo bin", do you mean the same ones that are in parks etc, or are these special bins? We have one in the park that's about 20 metres from my front door, it's never occurred to me to put our "pooh from home" in there, or am i totally wrong here?  :005:

Also, with the landfills, what about if you use biodegradable pooh bags , will they then not just disintegrate in to the landfill

Yup - I pop it in the Council poo-bin at the end of the road adjacent to the one I live in - it is collected daily and sent to the incinerator  ;) We will be getting a snazzy new "green" incinerator locally soon, that will generate electricity for the town too  :D

The only problem with land-filling biodegradable poo bags in that they have to go directly into the ground to biodegrade - not inside any other bags.....and we have to use black bin liners for our rubbish.....so nothing degrades inside it once it is buried  :-\

Here's a really helpful guide to the pick up or flick it - not somethng I've seen before - but fair do's.

I do still think leaving it to degrade in a garden is unpleasant and that it should only be "flicked" where clearly labelled to do so. Anywhere else you should pick it up.

Yup, its unpleasent and disgusting but I'm not about to wade into a load of thistles to retrieve his poos. We've only been in the house since September and the garden is on our long list of "to be sorted out". When we have a neatly manicured garden it'll be different, but at the moment our garden's only pupose is a dog toilet. No one goes in it or sits in it so its not a huge problem to me.

The other day after a spell of bad weather and not much poop picking I went out to do a poo sweep and ended up collecting 20  ph34r poops!!!!!! OMG!!!!

Filled a carrier bag!!  :005: new years resolution, go out everyday and pick up the poops!!

We have a field and a path on our estate for walking dogs and there is not one single poo bin... so the field is always covered in poo, its disgusting. I might write to the council and ask why there is'nt any bins!

Oh and for reference I bag mine and take it home!

On a walk, we'd generally flick it into very dense undergrowth, where it will biodegrade - I take the point about it not being a completely natural product, but cows, sheep and the like aren't wild animals. I don't ever see any horse riders cleaning up after their pets.

I put their dog poo in nappy sacks and then bin it in the wheelie bin with the rest of the rubbish, at the end of our road, where there is a dog bin, at the start of the common, there is a notice, telling people not to bin their dogs garden mess in the dog bin, but to put it out with the household rubbish :shades:

When I'm on the park I use the doggie bins, but there are not many of the street so I double bag it and put it in the waste bins,  which we are allowed to do within the Dudley Borough rather than just leave it.

At home- bag and bin.

We collect it up in poo bags and then put these in another bag and put it in our wheelie bin.

We used to collect it and take it to the local poo bins......to save the bin and the bin men having to suffer but all local poo bins (within walking distance on our usual walks) have been removed and I am not prepared to carry it / take it in the car to get rid.

Janey

ETA we don't use bio degradable poo bags as we have to double bag it for the wheelie bin....so no pint paying the extra.... ;)

Salmonella

 :o :o

OMG thats so worrying, I don't think i'll be able to drink tap water again now, I had no idea

Doesn't the same apply if you bag it and it then goes into landfill?  After all, eventually it's going to leach into the soil and eventually into watercourses. I must admit that we dump ours (well - the dogs' anyway - but I suppose it comes to the same thing!  ::)) into our septic tank.  I checked with the licensed company that empties it (about every five years) and they didn't have any problems with our doing that.  I'd be grateful to know if that causes a problem.

I have a bag in the garden that I put all the poo in, when it's full I tie it up , walk over the road to the council poo bin and drop it in.

I believe that most modern landfills are lined as to reduce the potential of 'leachate' entering a potable water supply or watercourse.  Most older landfills are hopefully positioned where the underlying geology isn't sensitive to such nasties.  Put it this way you are greatly increasing the chances of such diseases and bacteria entering a watercourse by leaving poo near a drainage ditch or watercourse then it going to well managed landfill.

Lottie is shy of pooing in public  :005: so her waste gets picked up into biodegradable nappy sacks and into biodegradable bin bags.  Our council owned poo bins often get full very quickly so even though I have one a stones throw away I try not to use it.

I must admit I stick 'n' flick in remote locations away from any obvious drainage routes.

ps - i hate to see hanging poo bags in trees too - people must be well meaning but forgetful!!

What I'm planning on doing is collecting it all up and burying it under some acid-loving plants, like heather, in the garden. I'm hoping if I bury it deep enough, the smell won't be a problem...

I put it in a pooh bag and then it goes in the wheelie bin. Presumed that everyone did the same  :embarassed:

...thats what I do  ;)

Me too.  Any one trying to steal my identity would have a shock if they rifled through my bin  :005: :005: :005:

The village society here has advised people that it is more environmentally friendly to leave it if in a field or woods (not on the footpath obviously) as it will decompose naturally as with the poo of wild animals and saves millions of plastic bags of poo going into landfill  :shades:

Yes I went somewhere last year, can't for the life of me think where, and they have the same policy.

None of these sound good to me.  Even if its not on the footpath makes no difference to me when walking with my 5 year old son, as he runs around with the dog and neither of them stick to the footpath!.    The number of shoes i have thrown away covered in dog pooh  >:D Its especially toxic to kids and can cause blindness

I think you may have mis-understood my post. I have always poop scooped and will continue to do so, I was merely pointing out what I had heard and also asking what is the point of bagging the poo and leaving it either hung on a bush or under you car??

And thank you, I have owned dogs for long enough now (since my now 17yr old was four) to know of the diseases canine faeces can cause especially to children.

The principle of "stick and flick" is that the poo is flicked into undergrowth/brambles/ditches etc, away from areas that can be accessed by foot traffic of any form;  even the most determined toddler/child is put off by a bramble thicket or nettle bed, which is where I flick poo when I am out walking.

As a mother of a young child myself, I know how horrid poo-on-the-shoes can be (http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/3876/sick3qx.gif)

Dog poo is not toxic as such (although not pleasant), but it can carry eggs of the common roundworm, which if allowed to develop in the faeces for two or three weeks, can in very rare cases causes toxocariasis in humans - no more than two cases per million every year are recorded. One of the reasons it is so rare is because regular worming of pet dogs has become routine, and the climate in the UK rarely allows the eggs to develop in the faeces - it usually washed away by the rain long before the eggs have chance to develop  :-\

There are still very good reasons to worm and clear up after your dog - but the fear of infection/blindness in children is one that needs to be kept in perspective  ;)

Aaah right must have misunderstood.  agree with michelle though that theres no point in picking it up and leaving it behind in a bag,  Cant help but laugh at the phrase 'stick and flick'  :005:

Not sure what the guidelines are around here

Post by: shaendix on January 04, 2008, 05:17:50 AM
OK to compost but you can't use the compost on the vege garden.

Worm farms work really well for those with only a few dogs and are a much quicker and economical way of getting rid of the poo without damage to the environment.  Also not as smelly or take as much room as a compost heap.  You can put the vermacasts onto the flower gardens.

You have to have a farm just for the poo and not include other composting items such as veges etc as the worms will prefer them and not compost the poo.

Also you shouldn't give the worms poo from dogs that have been given worming tablets (kills em).    :D

Which rules out most pet dogs then - worming of pets really should be carried out regularly in order to protect other dogs in the neighbourhood; especially young puppies, and older or unwell dogs  :-\

wonder if it only applies to dogs that have been recently given wormers?  I have a compost bin but its garden compost, i put the contents of the rabbit hutch in there but it says u cant use dog waste

Sorry should have added not to give them the poo from dogs that have been wormed for a week after the worming, after that OK to feed the worms again!

I bag it and bin it.

Just after we moved though had an issue with next doors dog being in my garden EVERY MORNING, doing a poop and barking at me - cheeky swine, well, it got to the stage I was picking up more of next doors dog mess than my own, so I started chucking in over into their garden  ph34r

One night after a bad day, I threw it so hard it hit their back door and slid down in (UPVC).  Funnily enough their dog didn;t come into me garden again.

Bag and bin here too, and if Bailey does it while we're at work and there's no dog bin around, we're most days to be seen with a nappy bag hanging off the rear wiper blade till we get home! When he was very young, it was nothing to have 3 bags hanging there!

...Sammy hardly ever does a poop in our garden, usually when he's got an icky tum, but if he does, i bag it then take it to the field where we walk and put it in the dog bin provided ;) I wouldn't put it in our wheelie bin as they are only emptied every 2 weeks >:(

VERY off-topic, I know, but a friend who lives in a south coast city recently had a horrendous problem with her drains whereby the sewage of most of her road ended up on her drive.

Many dramas ensued, but the most vile was that she had to bag up the human wast and filled 3 big, strong waste bags. She then phoned  :o :o :o :o :o. WHen she explained again what it was and how much there was, she was told to take it to the tip and put it in the garden waste :o :o :o :o :o At one point she was even told to lie about what was in the sacks.

She is now having a very stressful time with environmental health and is planning to "go public" pretty soon if she can't get it sorted. (She no longer has the precious bundles, but I am afraid I can't remember what she did do with it in the end. I will try to find out.)

As for dog poo, I bag and bin. But do try to use biodegradeable ones now.

Dont know if its big enough to hold my 2 dogs poops though! Anyone know how long it takes the worms to convert?

Currently we just compost, as we have done nothing with the garden yet.... however we do hope to grow veggies in time, so may have to look into a wormery or something, as I don't like the idea of sticking a biodegradable product into a plastic bag.... Quite happy to bag and bin when out and about - though she normally does her business so far off the beaten track that I just leave it (If I don't think I can safely get there to pick it up, I don't think it poses risks to children!  If I can reach I try and throw some leaves over, as this helps it decompose more quickly...).
