Title: What "hooman" names DONT work for dogs?
Post by: stuffster on December 17, 2008, 04:05:51 PM
My OH and I were having fun thinking of names for the gorgeous pup in the puppies section last night, and came to the conclusion that some human names suit a dog and others just dont.

Some work really well, such as Charlie, Alfie (!), Jake, Harry,  etc

Some work because they are so human that they are brilliant, like Trevor & Dave (love those names), Brian, Eric etc

But some names just really DONT work - we ended up in hysterics at the idea of dogs called Derek, Nigel, Andrew, Gavin, Bruce, Stuart, Phillip, Paul etc. (Really hope I havent offended anyone with a dog with those names!)

What other names really wouldnt suit a cocker?

We meet a rottweiler every morning called Martin  :005:   I have to have to stop myself laughing when he does a runner down the beach with his owner shouting after him.

Well, my friend just got a rescue lab and named him Basil  :005: Sorry to any Basil's out there, but it just reminds me of Faulty Towers! Fortunately, he gets called Baz for short...I just can't bring myself to say Basil!!!!

I think those all fall into the "so naff they're cool" bracket

Martin is definitely a very odd name for a dog! I know a toddler called Martin too, which just seems too grown-up for a little fella!

This is great - My aunt wanted to call her gsd George, but as that's her dad's name, she didn't - which was probably just as well cos her dad has moved in with her now!

What about a dog called Wayne?

No ladies names suggested yet I see!!

Norman is a great name and is virtually Norms or Normy which is my (bitch) Weim's name  Although her name actually came from 'Normous' as in 'Enormous' and also because it sounded a bit like 'Storm' which was her name when I rehomed her - Storm is just a bit racey for our family so none of us could get the hang of it

I actually like Martin too.. the ONLY human dog name I've never been able to warm to, was my Ex MIL's GSD 'Brad' I just looked at him and saw an Aussie soap star, which is really confusing when you're looking at a very hairy MASSIVE German Shephard that isn't wearing swimming trunks. In fairness, she didn't name him, she rehomed him but think I'd have changed his name. I hated walking him just because I HATED calling him.. he was a lovely dog otherwise though! :005:

I know a racehorse called Gavin! The stable lads come up with some pretty daft names for their charges sometimes, but that has to be the worst yet.

Or worse if someone asking them what they are doing.... 'I'm looking for...' or where are you going 'Out to get....'

I think probably a quite amusing name would be Doug (in Scotland pronounced Dug) (which is also how some pronounce Dog) ;)

I don't think John, James, Richard, Keith, Alan, Francis or Michael really work for a dog.

There used to be 2 blue roan cocker brothers lived at the back of us called Daniel & Edward.  There was a boxer in the Vets once when I was there called Ralph.  There is a jack russell lives round the corner called Barbara.  There used to be a mongrel up the road called Betty and a scottie called Angus.  All of them suited their names.

Just going of the human name theme for a minute, met a lady a couple of weeks ago who is getting a cocker puppy and calling it Sunshine.  Can't say I'm keen on that.

I think Shirley would be a good unusual name.  Julian Clairy has a bitch called Valerie, which is about the same thing as Shirley.  The last dog we had I actually got to name (i.e., got her as a puppy) was in 1985 and we called her Vickie.  She was a really sweet gentle Dalmatian girl and it suited her.

Why do we make pet names longer instead of shorter though?  We often called Vickie Victoria, called our old lab, Bessie, Elizabeth.  I'm already calling poor old Alfie Alfredo when I'm petting him, and Mollie is usually Molliedog.

We have a cocker called Reg, but he is Reggie now.  The breeder was seriously unimpressed, so much that we pretended we were going to call him something else in case she refused to sell him. My mother went on about it for weeks.  I love telling people he is called Reg.  But he does suit Reggie better as it is sweet.  Mind you, our last cocker was called Marmite, so it's an improvement.  I had a goldfish called Norman once, think Norm is a cool name :005:

Funnily enough I haven't seen her since  ::)

The strangest one though is a dog I know who is called Gari... :lol2:

i think it would end up being shortened to 'Tally'  :005: a Heeler is actually a Lancashire Heeler, a small black/tan or brown/tan cattle dog, with a big set of teeth and a HUGE attitude!  :005: here is Mindy....

I had a horse that came with the name Cordelia - couldn't stand that and changed to Cora....  Another horse raced under the name "Someone Else" but known at home as Jasper.  Always great sorting insurance etc -  "and what is the name?" answer "Someone Else" reply " So who's?" you get the drift......

Friends have a cocker called "Bruce" it's a great name that suits him and goes with his affix (Springstein!)

OH would of been honoured if you'd name Bob "Colin", Sarah  :005:

Wouldn't of thought about Philip but it suited the big black Shnauzer (sp?) at Crufts.

My Grandad has a cat called Humphrey, he's a big Tom and it really suits.
Humphrey is the name my Gdad used to assume when he went out dancing with the ladies, that way if he, basically pulled them, and didn't want to know after they'd not be able to trace him. His current wife didn't know he was really called Malcolm untill about 3 months before they were married  >:D So the big Tom takes after hs namesake  ::)

Bob was going to be called 'Norman' or 'Colin' or 'Noris' but mom wouldnt have it  ::)  >:(

I maybe about to keep a boy & the names in the running are 'Colin' 'Dave' or 'Barry'!

I vote 'Colin' - with a cool name like that he'd be bound to add to your long list of a SH CHs, Kim.  :005:

I once knew a big, solid, piebald coloured horse called Colin; he was named after the character in 'The Brittas Empire' because he had a spotty, scabby face when he first arrived.......(like the character in the programme .........no offense at all intended to you, Colin  ;))

I rode him a few times & he resembled a large, comfortable armchair!!! :D

I know someone with 2 springers called Bonnie and Clyde which is pretty cool,

As I mentioned recently in the rescue section, I homed a puppy to a lady with a bitch called Bonnie and she called him Clyde.  :shades:

Also from the same litter a pup went to live with a Golden Retriever called Buster and they called him Keaton - I think that is just the coolest name.  :shades: :shades:

I used to groom a gold cocker called Gordon.

I don't think Michele would work as a dogs name.  :-\ ph34r :lol2:

I had a cat called Peter but I've not heard of a dog called Peter, I also had a cat called Simon...I know of a Rottie called Tallulah  :005: she's lovely though.

We had a Lab called Sally when I was a child.

When we first visited some new friends they said Uncle Rufus will be in shortly and the way they talked about him I was expecting a jolly type of chap but in walked this lovely wire haired dachshund with the biggest whiskers and character I have ever seen :005:

our first lab was 'Jenny' - there was slight confusion when my brother married a Jenny, but it's always been evident who the most lovely bitch was (and she had 4 legs  :luv: :luv: :luv:  ph34r )

I LOVE the idea of 'Uncle Rufus' - what a brilliant name (I do love wire haired dachsies, they are such characters  :luv: )

When Milly came to stay  with us I called her Tilly as I said I was keeping her "till he" said she had to go!
"He" then said to me one day "If you're planning to keep that dog you'll have to change her name. That's my granny's name."  :005:
So she became Milly and 9and half years later she is still here.  :luv:

My friend called her collie Lucy after my mum, so when I got Daisy I thought about returning the favour and calling her Margaret after my friend's mum (for all of about 2 seconds!).  I do still look at Daisy sometimes though and think 'you really do look like a Philip to me'  ph34r .

I've called my young tortoise Betty, (because when I collected her she did a huge stinky poo in the car and when I got her out I did a Frank Spencer - oooh, Betty's done a whoopsie - and it stuck (the name, not the poo)).  But as you can't really tell the sex of a tortoise until it gets a bit older the male name I've got in reserve is Cecil.

I have all human names for my dogs ....

Sebastian who gets shortened to Sebbie or Seb and when he has been clipped he gets nicknamed shawn  ;) ;)
Douglas who gets shortened to Doug or Dougster - I do get some funny looks when I'm shouting Doug though  ;)
Marvin who gets shortened to Marv or Marvellous or Mad Marv and people do think this is a strange name to call a dog but I love it and it suits him to a tee !!
Oliver who gets called Oliv or Ol or Olly

I have a friend who has a Basset called Basil, a cocker called Parsley another one called Sage and a little girl one called Rosie  ;) ;)

I personally love human names for my dogs.

There was a famous Geoffrey in the Cocker world - Bitcon Troubador ..... I think all names can work !!!

Our cat's name is Keith.  People think that's funny but I don't know why.  He's 17 or 18 now and suits it.

I like the Daphne Dobermann story.

Only Daphne I've known was an American cocker and she suited it (sweet old fashioned lady).

I have really enjoyed reading all your answers, and it has had me thinking. The only name for me that suits my hooman friend, but seems to jar for a dog is Tracy!Although I am prone to mind change at the drop of a hat.

I also had two silver fox dwarf rabbits called Bunny and Clyde and our tortoise is called Jake but was named by his first owner 50 or so years ago!

On a slight tangent......

I had a rat I called Atooi - "this is my rat, Atooi"  (Ratatooi food type thing.....)

2 deformed goldfish.  One was called Dolly Dolphin by my sister cos she had a dolphin shaped face (the fish, not my sister).  Mine had a little cyst growing on it's nose so was called.................  Bogie.................   ph34r

When doing work experience at a vets, a lady brought her dog in, a lovely tricoloured mongrel, called Blob.....  It really suited him

To briefly continue in the 'off tangent' mode.
I had two goldfish many years back and I had no idea what sex they were, so I called them 'AC' & 'DC'  ph34r

I think Cedric and Edwin are nice, because they are quite classy, just like Cockers are. Rufus was going to be Jake, as he is black, but it reminded be of an awful man whose case I dealt with at work. He stalked a lady and ended up in Court, so I thought of Rufus and got teased because he is black not red. It suits him, so I don'tcare. My 17 year old cat called Basil died this morning. I do agree that Basil is not a dogs name. He was Basil because his markings were a bit faulty, and because we like to use herb names for cats

I know this doesn't apply to dogs, but it's in the same vein...many years ago we were planning a house-warming party and thought we should invite our neighbours.  We hadn't met them, but had heard the lady calling "Martin", so my OH went round to invite her and said "of course, you and Martin would be very welcome to come along to our party".  She gave him a funny look and said "Martin's my cat"   :rofl1: :rofl1:
