Jet was killed this afternoon in a road traffic accident. Can't say anymore at moment just run free my little monster and give my love to Barney if you see him. :luv: :luv:

Some dogs you remember even when you don't know them personally, and your Jet was one of them. Your stories of what he had been up to made me smile at his naughtiness. It was clear that you loved (and love) him very much. Wishing you all the best in the time to come.

I still can't belive Jet has gone and it is my fault for getting too complacent. I exercise the three of them every day in the fields behind my house. The fields are empty and are nowhere near the road. If i didn't keep a close eye on Jet he would scoot across the fields to the farm to see the dog that lives there but he would come back after a few minutes. When he disappeared yesterday evening I wasn't too concerned especially at it was time for his meal and Jet loved his food. Unfortunately this time jet took a completely different direction and must have crossed 3 fields to get out onto the road where he just ran out in front of a car. I have spoken to the lady who hit him and she is devasted. He died instantly.Thankfully no-one was hurt -I could have been responsible for killing someone. Her car is slighly damaged but won't cost much to fix and our insurance will take care of that. However Jet is gone for ever and that poor woman is so upset at having hit him and it is just because I assumed that he would be right behind me as usual.

As Louis Mum says - you really mustnt blame yourself - its just one of those awful things - and the next few days, weeks, months are going to be hard enough without thinking it is all your fault. Run free Jet :'( :'(

This happened to one of my young pups in October and she thought the same as you. These things are freak accidents that no one can predict and are no ones fault.

Please try not to blame yourself too much.
Even though I'm a bit of a worrying overcareful person, I've had my share of heartstopping moments with my dogs, some of them involving roads.
And the enormous relief after when it turned out all right...
There are risks everywhere in a doggy's life, as to read in the posts on COL. You try your best, but to cut out every and all risks would leave them a very meager life, I feel. In every accident there is a "what if...".
To me you sound like a responsible person who tries to give her dogs a happy fullfilled life and I've no doubt your Jet has had that with you. Take care.

So sorry this has happened to your special boy, but please don't blame yourself. :-* We have all done the same and luckily most of the time nothing bad happens - you were just so so unlucky. Comfort yourself with the thought that Jet was happy and loved in the short time he was with you - as we all know a lot of dogs never know that. :-\ By the sound of it he knew nothing about it so didn't suffer - harder for you than for him. :-\

It could so easily have happened to any of us, please please don't blame yourself. I exercise the dogs in a field across a main road two minutes from our house and last week Woofie decided on the way home that he would ignore my calls for me to put him on the lead and ran all the way to the main road, luckily he stopped.

As others have said, this was not your fault. :-*
Dogs are independent personalities, as much as we can train them and get to know them, there will always be times they do something unexpected - for most of us this doesn't have devastating consequences. This could have happened to any number of people here, as any dog that runs off lead could catch and scent and run... :-\ I know this is no comfort to you right now, but somewhere inside you you know this was a tragic accident, and not anyone's fault. :-*
You did so much for Jet in the short time he was with you, and in the weeks and months to come, I truly hope you can gain some comfort from that knowledge.

so, so sorry to hear your tragic news. :'( It's really sad and there's prob not a lot to be said, that can ease your heartache....allow yourself time to grieve (wanted to send you a smiley hug but there isn't one.......i send you a hug anyway :luv:) 1 of our cats got run over outside our house at xmas. He was only 5. He didn't die straight away.......the vets tried to save him...but alas, no good :'( We had him cremated and he's back with us, sat on the side in the lounge.........can't bury him alone in the garden. He stays in the house with me!........i look at photos of my animals when i lose one, it helps me to remember the happy times........thinking of you :luv: :luv:

I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. A freak accident that could well and truly happen to any of us. Doggies have minds of their own and sometimes these things happen.
We could prevent it by having them on lead all the time, but that's no life, I know what I would prefer, the wind in my ears, running free.

my little Jack Russell escaped last week and ran off along the main A5 such a busy road just caught her in time but it was a heart stopping moment, im only adding this so you know it could happen to any of us at any time.

Oh how awful :'( I think that this is one of those scenarios that is every COL members idea of a nightmare.
It's so difficult to know what the right balance is between wrapping them up in cotton wool and letting them just get on with the things that they want/and enjoy doing. I'm so sorry that Jet had such awful bad luck in this instance :embarassed:

sorry to hear this dreadful news.
Please dont blame yourself, this could have so easily have been Taz at the weekend - we went to a common which looked safe to let him off, then we realised that there was a road across the side of it which we couldnt see and Taz had gone running that way - fortunately recall worked - so i know how easy these accidents happen.

I want to thank everyone for their kindness. I have been coming to terms with the loss of Jet. I have good friends both on and off COL, I also have my lovely old girls Ali and Milly who are a big comfort.
Life is very quiet without Jet ,and Barney before him. I know that sometime in the future I will have a little black boy again but not for some time. I hadn't fully grieved Barney when Jet came along and now I need time to grieve for both my boys who died so tragically and so young. Sometimes I wonder why Jet came to us when we were only to have him for 9 months. Then I think perhaps the alternatives for him would have been worse. He had plenty of issues. He was a chewer, a guarder, not toilet-trained, a thief and had virtually no training. Perhaps if we hadn't taken him when his owners moved he might have been moved from home to home as people realised wht he was like. Before he came to us he life was spent mainly alone in the garden of his previous owners home.
In the time with us Jet loved life. His little tail was constantly going 19 to a dozen. He was happy and he was loved until the moment he died. I take some comfort from that. I also like to think that he and Barney are running together in the fields behind my house. My two darling boys. :luv: :luv:

i lost my beloved blue roan, Duke in the same way.
so i know exactly how you are feeling.
please dont blame yourself - easier said than done, i know.
he was with you for only a short time but during that time he gave you laughs and happy memories - and you did the same for him.
keep hold of those memories.
i am crying whilst writing - the pain does not go away - but it changes and the funny and good things will stand out - not the tragic
ending.

I'm sure in time you will find space in your heart for another, take time to grieve you two boys. It's unbelievable how one person can have such ill fortune to loose both so young in such a short space of time :'(

You know I truly believe that all our little ones come into our lives for many different reason's and when the time comes and the Master calls (even if they are young ) for them to be called to the rainbow bridge, we have no say in the matter, remember Jet is now fit and well and playing with Barney now.

Some cockers have a longer life in years, but as we all know sadly they don't all have the chance to run free and enjoy themselves in the same way that Jet did.
