Title: heartbroken....Charlie has gone......
Post by: Charlie & Jasper on April 05, 2009, 09:47:04 PM
I arrived back from a weekend in London today to find out that on Saturday morning my darling baby boy Charlie died after being hit by a car....my parents rushed him to the vets where they tried everything they could but his little heart just gave up and he passed away.

I can hardly see to type but I knew you would all understand....I feel so so horribly guilty that I wasn't here or even got to say goodbye. I hate to think of him so scared and hurting without me being here.

He was the happiest dog alive...and now he's gone.

My baby boy I miss you so much...I hope you have found Rupert and are having the time of your life up there together - I love you.

It's easy for me to say I know but please don't blame yourself. We simply cannot be with our dogs 24/7, you were not to know this would happen, there was nothing you could have done.

I can't imagine how you must be feeling  :'(

Thank you everyone for your kind and lovely words....they are helping somewhat with the massive amount of pain I and my family are all feeling.

Even though he was only with us for a year it was the most amazing year - he really was the happiest little dog around who made me laugh everyday. It was only Thursday he learnt to jump into water and had the whole of my brothers rowing squad laughing as he divebombed everyone jumping into the river continually.

Archie our little springer keeps looking for him round the house and garden...bless his little heart. Has anyone got experience of another dog being left on his own? Were they ok? Did they get through it?

Thank you so much everyone...I just hope being on here can help a little with the heartbreak.

Sorry to hear of your sad loss. We also lost our Yorkie whilst away on a holiday and my Mum was taking care of her. She had reached the ripe old age of 14 years and she was also a very happy and contented dog. She had to be PTS because of a brain tumour. We also felt gulity over the fact we weren't here in her hour of need but took comfort from the fact she had brought us 14 years of joyful times.

We also felt for my Mum who refused to ring us and inform us of our sad news and bottled up the hurt she felt until we returned.

No words can make you feel better but remember the good times memories cannot be removed. Charlie will be in your heart forever.

So very very sorry.  It is always horrible to lose a dog but doubly heartbreaking with such a youngster.  In answer to your question, we have been left with one lonely puzzled dog three times after the death of the chum.  Yes, they do get over it eventually but the time varies.  It helps if they can see their friend at the end - they realize what has happened and stop searching.  But that is probably not possible for you.  One of ours actually revelled in being the sole focus but another of them was totally inconsolable until we added another dog to the family. It is probably far too painful for you to think of that at the moment so perhaps it would help Archie to have as much doggy company as you can manage outside the home until you all feel ready to look forward.  My deepest sympathy to you all.

I am so very sorry for your loss, my heart really goes out to you  :-*

Our springer Paddy has had 2 loses in his 8 years. Paddy lost his mother (to stomach cancer) 2 years ago last month and to say that he went into the equivalent of a human depression was an understatement. Paddy lay by his mothers side when the vet came to the house to let her go to sleep and when she did he got up and walked away and lay looking out of the window  :'( Paddy lost all zest for life and after a couple of weeks he started looking forward and getting excited to go out. He would be happy when he was out and when he came back into the house his face would just fall and he would go and lie in his bed, poor boy, he had never been separated from his mother for more than a day since he was born.

2 months after we lost Paddy's mum we got Milly, my first cocker who was aged 7.5 months. As soon as Paddy saw her his face lit up and he never looked back. Then very tragically we lost Milly last July in a car accident at only 22 mts old. Poor Paddy, he was back to being lost and lonely and wondering what had happened to his playmate  :'(

We now have another cocker Murron, who terrorizes the life out of Paddy and he loves it, well most of the time, there are occasions where he could see her far enough  >:(

I don't know if what I am saying will help you at all but, Paddy did get through it and very sadly had to go through it again. I think as Paddy had always had company since he was born made life so much harder for the poor boy as he was totally lost without his mammy and then his playmate Milly  :luv:  :luv:

Give your Archie lots of extra cuddles and we send him gentle hugs as we do to you too, take care of yourselves  :-*

Run free at the bridge Charlie with all our beloved ones  :luv:

I recently lost my Cocker Spaniel leaving me with a Little Jack Russell, she has looked around for Max but has adapted very quickly, but from talking to others I have been very lucky and I hope you are too and that Archie soon settles as Kia has.

Before my girls now we had a setter (Poppy) and a, as above, JRT (Coco). When Poppy passed, as terrible as it sounds, Coco thrived. She had a short period of 'Isn't she coming back?' but in the long run she very much enjoyed being an only dog even though she arrived years after Poppy. I don't know if it's a breed thing, also it was Poppy's time, perhaps more so and dog by dog thing but give it time and see how he goes. The fact that you're feeling so terrible may also be affecting him as much as anything.

Take care of yourself  :luv:

Both fern and Braan were lost when we lost Jock and it took them a good 2 - 3 months to accept that he was no longer here. Slightly different I know as I still had two - but it was hard for them to adjust too and it took time

Lovely post Cath  :luv:

I agree....thank you Cath that was a lovely post and has helped put my mind at rest a little. Archie is currently still very confused - he seems to go through periods of sadness where he just lies looking at the door or out of the windows waiting for his best friend to come home. I think the fact he has been with Charlie every day since the age of 8 weeks, plus Archie doesn't really get along with many other dogs so Charlie really was his best friend.

Archie has also become very clingy...not wanting to leave our sides when he's not watching out of the window and whining if someone goes out - I'm becoming worried that he's going to develop some separation anxiety or get himself very worked up when we have to go out.

Is there anything I can do to help him? Watching him like this is breaking my heart for a second time...all i want to do is make things better for him during this sad time. Would something like rescue remedy help when he gets worries about people leaving? Is there any other homeopathic remedies that might help him?

I'm going to take him back to our favourite walking spot today but he has become so unsure as he followed Charlie's lead - hopefully if we go slowly we can build his confidence back up.

Thank you everyone so so much for all your kind lovely words...they have helped us all through this awful time - I showed my parents the number of posts this thread has had and it brought tears to us all. The kindness you have all shown is amazing and I just can't put into words how amazed I feel and how I hope Charlie knows how many people have helped us through this. Thank you everyone - if i could say it to you all personally I would!  :luv:  :luv:

Now that you have mentioned about Archie being clingy, I remember Paddy became the same after he lost his mammy. I remember leaving my voice recorder recording on several occasions when I had to go out for more than a couple of hours. I just wanted to check that he wasn't pinning and upset. Thankfully there was nothing on the recorder, so he was obviously settled when we were out. It was a bit like leaving a toddler at nursery for the first few times, they would be clingy and not wanting you to leave, then after a few days/week, they run off ahead of you to get there, if that makes sense  :-\

I did spend quite some time taking him with me where ever possible e.g. car....and tried hard to keep home life as much the same as before he suffered his losses such as, making sure he had access to rooms and areas that he would have normally. Although, he did go off his food for a couple of weeks.

Personally, I think our dogs grieve and need to just as we do  :'( only they can not express it the same as we do. I am not to sure about the rescue remedy, I have never used it, it may be worth a try if you think it may settle Archie a bit.

Good luck with taking Archie back on his walk, it certainly helped Paddy and it did cheer him up. He has never been one for mixing with other dogs and he used to take his mum's lead too. Anything is worth trying at the moment, including extra Archie cuddles  :luv:

You take care  :-*

I have only just read this and looked at all your pictures of gorgeous Charlie.

I can only imagine how heartbroken you are. He was a beautiful boy and you obviously loved him very much. Give yourself and Archie time to grieve and come to terms with what has happened. The pain of your loss will lessen in time.

I have lost 2 dogs within the last year and it's devastating. It is very tough particularly as Charlie was so young.

Be kind to yourself. No blame. You loved and treasured him whilst he was here.

Gentle hugs to you all.

Linda

Not the same, but I used emergency essence recently for a few days for my 3 before bringing our new adopted rescue in. I'm sure it helped as they were quite calm about it. Whereas when I brought my 2nd rescue in I didn't use anything and it was quite volatile.
I just added 7 drops to their drinking water, so it's worth a try. It won't do any harm.

I am so very, very sorry to read about Charlie.

No one ever imagines, when they take on a little puppy, that one day they will experience such heartbreak and pain.

Hugs, and cocker kisses from Maureen, Freya and Luis. xxx
