She is going to be ok, as this happened yesterday when I was in hospital having my investigations. OH took the dogs to a local park, it is the first time he has taken them on his own, and the first time Tia has been in that particular park.
They were in the glen part of the park, and in order to cross to the other side of the burn, they had to come out of the glen, but were still in the actual park. He made sure both Duggie and Tia were with him all the way as there is a gate further up the hill that leads to a busy road, but Tia heard a dog barking in the street and suddenly bolted up the hill and out of the park and across the road, where she was struck by a passing car. OH didn't see it happen, he heard her screaming, and heart in mouth, grabbed Duggie and raced out of the gate to find her lying on the road not moving. :'(
A woman appeared with a blanket, and a few other people stopped to help, OH got her immediately to the vet, where they said they didn't think she had internal injuries, but may have broken her leg and had bad bruising, she also had a cut on her mouth. By this time, she could stand up, but couldn't walk. They decided to send her home to be monitored, and she was given metacam and morphine injections, and he was told to bring her in this morning to be x-rayed.
He had to come and collect me from hospital, and I didn't notice anything until, as we got in the car, he was shaking and in a terrible state, and he told me what had happened. I was too out of it with my anaesthetic to really take it in, and on hindsight am glad of that, but he reassured me she was ok. I phoned the vet as soon as I got in, and she told me to keep a close eye on her all night and get her straight in if she got worse. It was so worrying, as she was just lying in her bed all night, but the morphine was making her sleepy. :'(
She is much better today, and can hobble around slowly, the vet thinks it is a bad sprain, and she is on metacam and rest for a while. She was so lucky, as apparently, an articulated lorry was passing at the same time as the car that hit her. I am so shaken up now, and can't believe what happened, a split second and she was nearly gone. OH is blaming himself, but it happened so quickly that he couldn't have caught her, he is cursing himself for not putting their leads on at that part, but thought the gate was far enough away. The thought that we nearly lost her is horrendous, but she is still with us asking for cuddles and treats today. :luv:

How awful for you all - as I was reading I was thinking please let Tia be ok.
Hopefully some rest will see her get better day by day - such a lucky escape, as it sounds as if it could have been so much worse.

Oh Dog, poor Tia, :o i was just about to reply to your hospital post, you are certainly both in the wars >:( , i hope the consultant can finally find out what is causing your problems, a hug to you and a gentle squidge for Tia :-* :luv: i am sure that Duggie is doing his best Florence Nightingale impression for his Mum and baby Sister :luv:

Awww Fiona what a terrible day you and your OH must have had :'( I am so glad she seems better today , give Tia a gentle hug from us and a big kiss from Belle to Duggie cos I bet he is making you feel better :angel: Your poor OH too I hope he is still not feeling guilty, Tia is still new to you and you have yet to discover what will set her running (like the dog bark ) he wasn't to know that so really shouldn't blame himself. you've all had a truly horrible day .......I feel for you all :luv:

Oh what a fright!!!! Ur poor OH must be feeling awfull but u are right these things can happen in a split second and u cant be on ur guard every second of every day!!

What a terrible day you have had, at least Tia seems to have been one very lucky girl and i hope she continues to make a full recovery. Hope you are being extra nice to your oh, he must be feeling terrible.

So sorry, this happened to our poodle years ago. She went out to greet my Dad when he came home from work but went into the road and got hit by a car. Luckily she was dazed more than anything. She couldn't walk properly for a day or two, but went on to make a full recovery without so much as a broken bone anywhere. She was really lucky.

How dreadful, and what a shock for you. This sort of thing can happen so easily and it's almost impossible to prevent.

I am so happy that Tia is gonna be ok and I hope that hairy black guardian angel is watching over you too, and that all your pain and discomfort will soon be a thing of the past. Poor OH, Tia and you. I lived have in dread of this for so long, and still get nervous around roads. I have witnessed it twice, happening to the most well behaved dogs and caring owners who were just not familiar with the road. I am so relieved she is better.

Poor Tia and poor your OH.
A few days ago we came out of our local park a different way to usual, onto an open track with a busy main road at the end close by. Ellie had gone to chase a squirrel so was out of sight, I manically called her but she didn't appear. Then I saw a flash of white on the road and was convinced it was her. My stomach went, my legs went and I could hardly breath. Then Ellie appeared and I don't think I have ever hugged her as hard as I did then. How your OH felt to know that Tia had been hit by a car, heard her scream and then to see her lying on the road, I cannot honestly imagine, it must have been unbelievable terrifying for him.
I am so pleased that Tia is not badly hurt, Gari was definitely looking after her. Hope that your OH is starting to feel better and realise it was one of those things that he just couldn't foresee.
Have just read your other thread and am so sorry you have not been given a definitely diagnosis, it must be so frustrating for you.

Thanks everyone for such lovely kind words. :luv: I've been feeling incredibly guilty about it all, and I wasn't even there. I have been walking Tia in woods well away from roads so far, and have only started going to parks, so I should really have said to OH not to take her to that park as she wasn't ready for it yet, but he automatically went there as Gari knew it well and so does Duggie. :-\
Her recall is excellent, and OH said she was brilliant all the way round, coming back instantly and never going out of his sight, but he did say he was looking at Duggie when she heard the other dog and ran, so it was just that split second too late. I don't think he'll ever forgive himself, but I'm not blaming him, and at least she is ok. He really thought she had been killed, so we will both be extra careful from now on.

I've only just seen this Fiona as I have been in bed for the best part of the day as I have a chest infection. As soon as I saw the title of the thread I was in shock but so pleased once I read down and saw that she was going to be OK.
These things happen so quickly so your OH must not blame himself. It was only last week that Gabby got out of our front gate >:D >:D - I had literally opened it for a split second to get the recycling bin in and she was out. Because she has never been out there before off her lead I think she panicked and the more I shouted her, the more she ran - straight across one of the side roads. :o :o Luckily nothing was coming and one of my neighbours who was just coming back with their dog grabbed her.
We now have a lock on the gate!!!!!

OMG. :o I was scared to read this thread as I feared the worst. How awful, but It is definitely no ones fault and it really could happen to anyone one and is one of my worst fears with my lot. Your poor OH needs a stiff whisky now I feel poor chap. I am so, so glad she is OK. :luv:

have just seen this now, i hope shes ok and you and OH have recovered from the shock, we sometimes forget just how fast they can cover the ground when they want to, its my worst nighmare with Ella, as shes so quick and can sometimes just charge off after something (im sure its everyones worst nightmare ) anyway i hope your all feeling ok

I've only just seen this as well - Thank goodness she is ok and you and your OH must have been worried sick. This is one of my worst nightmares with Poppy as she is fairly good with the recall but if she saw another dog or bird she is off like a shot. It could easily be any one of us I would say.....

Thank goodness Tia is fine, what an awful shock for both you and your OH.
I know we had a close shave with Lottie when she was about 5 months old. We live on quite a busy road but it backs onto the most amazing wooded walk and we obviously don't let the dogs off the lead until we are well into the field, just before the wood. One day out of the blue Lottie bolted back up the field and ran out onto the path that adjoins the busy road. I have never been so terrified infact I was rooted to the spot with fear, I thought she will have just run across the road and will have been hit by a car for sure. My OH took chase but couldn't catch her and she was completely deaf to us. I eventually gathered myself and walked out of the field terrified that I would find her in the road but she had stayed on the path and was waiting at our back door for my OH when he eventually caught up with her.
I don't know what spooked her ,but to this day I can still remember the fear and dread as I walked out of that field. Luck was on our side that day but it could so easily have been different.

Just want to say though, maybe to still get her x-rayed? Truffle's vet thought she was ok after she was hit by a car, just bruised. I kept taking her back cos I thought something was wrong and after twelve days she was x-rayed and found to have a very bad spinal fracture. She had run out on to the road, had never done it before. She's been very deaf since birth and recall is a problem. I still have nightmares about it, especially the pain she must have been in til diagnosed. I really don't want to scare you, but now when I hear about RTAs I do worry. I just wish I had been more assertive.

Oh my, I felt sick when I read the title. Poor Tia, and your poor OH. As others have said, he mustn't blame himself, these scarey moments happen.

Tiff escaped out of the front door once while I was unloading my car across the road from my house. My heart was in my throat as she came hurtling towards me, luckily the car coming up wasn't too fast and stopped when I started jumping up and down waving at them (mad woman ph34r)

Tia is managing to use her leg now, although still limping, but stopping her jumping on and off our bed and the sofa is a bit of an ordeal! :o She also decided to try to run when I was giving them their breakfast, I don't know why, as I wasn't running and she wouldn't be getting it any quicker by beating me into the kitchen. ::)
She was blaming OH for her accident last night, she growled at him when he sat beside her to pat her, and she wouldn't go near him. :'( As if he didn't feel bad enough, but I'm sure she will soon forget all about it. We'll see how she is when he comes home tonight.
I took Duggie to the park today, and almost saw another dog being knocked down - she was just a pup, and was getting so excited playing with Duggie that her collar and lead somehow came off and she ran in front of a park ranger's van. :P

I don't know where I have been looking to have missed these posts I am totally shocked by this. My heart stopped when I read the first line and now I feel so bad for your OH the poor man, its not his fault and everyones worst nightmare.

It may have been because Duggie was there, but she definitely was funny with him. Although, she probably wanted back to me as I've been spoiling her! ::) He did hand feed her and she took it as she is such a grubber, but then wouldn't go to him when he called her over, we just can't think why as she has been following him around since she came here. :-\

Agree with SkyeSue that Tia is NOT blaming your OH - and make sure he knows that...
It may be that she is remembering he was nearby when she was in a lot a pain and is a little wary from that association, or it could be something else entirely, but it is NOT blame... I'm sure that if he continues with the handfeeding she will soon revert to her normal self with him... :luv: (especially if she is a "grubber"!!)
Hope she continues to recover well and that she gets the all clear at the vets!

She's doing well, will have a checkup tomorrow to make sure her leg is mending, in case she needs a support on it. :luv:
The police phoned today to ask how she is, as the elderly couple who hit her were concerned about her apparently. The constable said there is no blame on either part, as it was merely an accident, she was off lead in a park and not a street, and it was just unfortunate she ran out, the driver couldn't avoid her.
It was only when I spoke to the police that I realised we could have been held responsible, but they said there would be no repercussions, thankfully. :P
I took Duggie to the same park today and was a nervous wreck, although we stayed well away from any gates, but I was panicking even being there, but hopefully I will calm down a bit once I've been back a few times. ::)

I hope Tia is bouncing about like Tigger soon, and that your OH's nerves have calmed down.
Katie got out of her harness on a main road within 2 weeks of having her (a woman bent down to pat them and Katie was petrified and backed out of it :o) OMG :'( that frightened the living daylights out of me, and I then carried her home (daren't use the harness and it went straight in the bin).
I must admit that 18mths or so on from that, I am really nervous of taking them both out together on my own.

Aw fiona- i am so sorry I hadnt noticed this sooner, I hope it wont be long til everyting back to normal for the 4 of you and you can relax on your walks and enjoy them, give Stuart a big hug as I am sure he will still be shaken over the incident, squidge Duggie for being a good boy and staying with his daddy and snuggle tia as I am sure it will make you feel better xxx
