Title: New Year cocker waist challenge anyone?
Post by: mcphee on December 30, 2009, 10:42:08 AM
Rufus and I are keen that 2010 does not see our waist lines expanding with midlife spread. We have just returned from a great walk beside the River Lavant, where Rufus did a bit of aqua exercise against the current to counteract the turkey and liver cake. (Well he thought he was getting the stick I threw). As he was soaking still when we got home, I took a photo of what purports to be his waist, (I am sure I can see it any way) as it always looks better when he is wet. I measured him round his waist. I find this is a bit tricky as underneath the tape has to go over  part of his male parts (I reckon this is worth half an inch or so over a bitch)
So, here goes
Height 16 inches
Chest 24 inches
Waist 17 inches
Weight a fraction under 13 kilos

I am not sure what a good differential between waist and chest is, so we are setting ourselves a modest target of half an inch off the waist and 12.5 kilos by the end of January. That is me and Rufus for the waist, but you are not seeing my waist or measurements!

Any one up for a challenge?

Brilliant Emma. We will have to be careful with "extras" like the turkey off the carcass after making soup, and the new batch of liver cake. Agility starts again right at the end of the month so more walks and less food for us!

Definately! We have been a bit lazy over the past week or so, so she hasnt been going out as much as normal - my excuse is that its christmas and also extremely icy - but there shouldnt be excuses ph34r so im gonna have to get my ar** in gear :005:. Not that Meg cares, shes quite happy to just play football with me and her ball in the living room and then sleep, eat and then sleep, go to the toilet and then sleep ::) :005: xxx

Rufus looks very slim to me, and I don't think he needs to lose any weight, he is quite light already. :D

However, Tia needs to join Doggy-Slimmers, her waist is a few inches bigger than Rufus's! ph34r We have been cutting down her food and treats since we got her, and have upped her exercise, and I think she is losing a little weight, but will only know for sure when I weigh her again.

Poor Tia. It's not her fault that cuddling is not as energetic or calorie burning as haring around after sniffs in a ditch. Rufus and I will sponsor Tia if she needs an incentive! I just know how quickly Rufie puts on weight, and I am not sure whether there will be maize in the fields next year, and whether his recall will hold out! Also, if we have to see the anorexic vet again, she will say he is overweight at his MOT at the end of January! I will try to book with the nice man vet, just in case!

Yeah there is a vet like that at ours, she told meg off for cheating when she had one leg off the scales >:( and kept making other snidey comments >:( fair enough she did need to lose some, which we made sure of but there is no need to be nasty >:D xxx

My dogs are in good nick, just me that isnt! Rufus looks fine to me but I'm sure half an inch will be beneficial.

Yes Darcey needs keeping under control. Baby weaning + greedy dog = ever increasing cocker. It's not just the stuff she drops I actually caught her feeding D a roast potato on boxing day  >:D she's only 6 months old!!

Anyway more exercise and less treats for us all in 2010.

Oh how lovely, and what an excuse for putting on weight! Darcy was only doing her cocker duty in training baby about how important it is to keep on the right side of your dogs appetite.

Hmmm....well, I've been wondering whether or not to join in this challenge  ;)
Since my recent thread about Chloe turning into a chunky monkey (at 14.1k) she is now down to 13.4 and whilst her waist is errrrr...the same as Rufus's  ph34r I'm rather liking the way she looks just now. I liked her when she was skinny as well, but looking back at pics of her when she was thinner and didn't have all her new fluff, I actually prefer the way she is now  :shades: ;) Having said that, I'm very impressionable, and if the likes of Jean, Nicola and Helen think she could do with losing an inch or two around the waist.....well, that has me swithering  :005: :005:

Oh dear Sue. Sorry to cause a swither (?!) This is a voluntary challenge (except for Rufus who does not know what the New Year holds for him). I hope you are not suggesting that having a waist the size of Rufus's is a problem for a girl?!! As I said, because of some anatomical details, Rufus is more like  16.5 waist if he were a bitch. Rufus likes a bit of fluff too, so by all means leave Chloe as she is. I will weigh him next week so will know how to rearrange his diet and exercise regime! Happy New Year to all cockers and their owners of whatever dimensions!

Can honorary cockers join the challenge or is this a yetti-free zone :005:. I would like Reuben to join in (depending on how long he stays here and if he'll let me measure him). I've been trying to get the weight off him since he arrived but we're not doing so well ::). Mind you, I think Brodie's put on a slight bit of weight as well so maybe this would do her some good too!

Of course, all free to join and the more cyber help the better. Honarary white  Scottish yettis are very welcome. First find his waist Jenny!

OMG sorry Vivian, of course I wasn't suggesting that...I was trying (and failed) to be tongue in cheek   As far as I'm concerned, neither of us should probably be overly concerned about our dogs wieght or waistline, its not as if they're fat....to my eyes, Rufus looks exactly the same dimensions as Chloe, and i was trying to say that I rather love that  :luv:

Fret not Sue, I took no offence. I think Rufus is perfect (and so is Chloe). It's the vet and Cruella who don't!

Vivian, Bella and I will join this, I have been trying to get her to shed a few pounds. The last time she was weighed she was 15.9kg and I know she is tubby. The vet did not say so he just said she was heavier than last time and the vet nurse said they all put on weight during the winter due to less exercise, this was about a month ago so I would be interested to see what she weighs now.  I weigh out their food and the treats have been cut right back, I am struggling with exercise as she has a leg injury but I do think she has lost some, she is very very fluffy though which does make her look fatter than she is. When she goes back regarding her leg I will get her weighed again. I do hope she has lots some and its not in my mind!!!!!

The exercise does seem to make a difference. Since the maize was harvested and Rufus started understanding recall, it has been easier to control his weight. He does quite a lot of sprinting to catch me up and on his little missions. I have stopped the sprinting after the ball on a rope to protect his hips, and swap it for more off lead walks. And no Greensticks at lunch time!

I need to start shutting her out when I fed Lib, I know I do, but it's a faff due to the way our house is laid out. Plus I am all for fostering a positive relationship between the 2 of them and the constant supple of food is doing plenty to reassure D that the baby is a jolly good thing to have around.

It's just frustrating as she only gets about 6 pieces of kibble per day anyway and her favourite treat is a carrot.

Actually I am going to get her a serious haircut too. That will help  :lol2:
