Working Cocker Size Vs Show Cockers
« on: January 26, 2006, 02:35:52 PM »
some of the working cocker posts have got me curious...working cockers are perceived as being bigger than their show cockers, and i was wondering if that was still holding true...

i'll start off ....once i get the tape measure out of someones mouth..

jarvis, working cocker, nearly 8 mths, 12.2kg
16 inches (almost 41cm) to the shoulder
back length (base of neck/base of tail) 22 inches (56 cm)

next! :P

will have to get my tape measure out. I know Zac is HUGE.

I did notice when I went to a field trial the trial cockers were all weeny.I think smaller than the average working cocker. I also think that the show cockers I see at crufts are a lot smaller than most of the average pet show type cockers. Any one agree?

Nope not really - you see quite a bit of variation at Crufts, same as anywhere so yes some will be at the smaller end of the size range but there are plenty of bigger Cockers to be seen at Crufts too. I see a lot of pet Cockers for grooming (mainly show-type) and again there is a range of sizes - some are tiny and some are huge with most "in between". Other things can also affect your perception of size - people who have seen Bayley, our foster Working Cocker, think he is very big but in fact he is only slightly taller than our show-type boy, Arran. Arran however has heavier bone and a bigger, deeper ribcage which means he weighs more than Bayley. Bayley looks so much bigger because he is leggier & has less feathering which emphasises this. With Cockers you can never generalise and say Working Cockers are always big and show-type Cockers are always small - there's too much variation in both types ;)

Jane

Edited to add Bayley & Arran's vital statistics :

Bayley:  16.5 inches tall, getting on for 19 inches long (from withers to base of tail)
Weight: 14 Kgs

Arran: 16" tall, about the same in length
Weight: 15.5 Kgs

Harry, 17months working cocker:

57cm collar to base of tail
40cm from shoulder to front paw

and weighing in at a whopping 18.10kgs  :o  (went to the vet last night).

in my mind he looks short and long, but defintely stockily built - NOT lean and leggy!!
xx my working cocker works very hard at being a lap dog xx

Mmm, not sure; Molo is the same size as his sire/dame and they have both been to Crufts  ;)  If anything, his sire was a bit bigger  :)  Most of the puppies from "show" litters go to pet homes, so theoretically, there shouldn't be that much difference....... ;)

Grooming makes a huge difference though - I always think that cockers in show trim look as if they have tiny legs because all the feathering hides them    I think that clipping cockers makes them look bigger, too  ;)

I have no idea how big Molo is - I'll try and get the tape measure out in the next few days

Here are the measurements of my two working cockers

Spud aged 6
weight 19.1kg
Height 49½ cm
length 60 cm

Bailey aged 1
weight 16.7kg
height 45½cm
length 55 cm.

Spud is the largest cocker that I have owned, my old dog Murphy (working cocker)was smaller and his Mum and sisters were very small.

Ok - how the for-goodness-sake did you all get your dogs to stand still long enough to measure them??  I think I may need the aid of super glue
