« on: July 30, 2003, 09:35:58 AM »
Any tips on the best ways to deal with the following ailments would be greatly appreciated :-

1. car sickness - even on short journeys (6 month old cocker)
2. inflamed lip folds (a senior cocker)

Thanks in anticipation, Andy

:) Many pups are sick in the car but most of them outgrow this problem by the time they are 12 months old. There are 2 main reasons for a dog being a poor traveller - fear and excitement.  Your vet should be able to prescribe some medication for this.

Inflamed lip folds are my life!!! :(
Sweep has had them for what seems like forever now. I clean them daily with hibiscrub and then every week apply a cream called fuciderm. When life gets smelly (As it does) we have to get Synulox tablets from the vet. (Which he is on again at the moment) Thes are great and clear up the smell a treat. However it does come back.
Sweep is 11 1/2 but i am seriously considering have them cut and stitched as the problem is reoccuring so often. Apparently there is no guarentee that surgery will work, but I have read previously on this site of people with success stories.
How long has your cocker been suffering? And how severe are they?

We've discussed car sickness a few times in the past but I can't seem to find the threads sorry. Anyway, some of the remedies suggested in the past have been ginger biscuits (fed before a journey), homeopathic remedies available from health food shop & human travel sickness tablets like Sea Legs or Stugeron (I personally have had great success giving a children's dosage of Sea Legs to car sick pups)

Another tip, is try and stop him looking out of the

window, as movement of cars going past might

trigger it off, it sometimes works with kids so why not

    dogs.  ;)

Reply from my mum :-

Thank you for your suggestions. Mollie is 7 and has had the lip fold problem about 18 months; I had an earlier cocker with the same problem. Currently, I use MALASEB shampoo (from the vet) twice a week (is HIBISCRUB a shampoo ?), in between treatments bathe them with tea tree lotion (someone suggested BORASSIC ACID - also an antiseptic) and have been prescribed SYNOLUX tablets periodically. At the moment I feel I am keeping on top of the problem, but not curing it.

When Neneh was travel sick as a puppy I tried Travella which is a herbal remedey available from Holland & Barratt and the likes. They do have to be given sometime before the journey but can be given enroute too if the journey is a long one. I tried various other things for her but these worked the best.
Might be worth a try :D

hi there,

I wrote the same question and travel sickness as Bailey could'nt go 5 miles without being sick!!!!

i did'nt really want to give him tabets as i was worried plus when we took him in the car it was for a walk.

I used to put thick news paper on the seat and put a towel over him, and drove around with him short distances going longer each time.

He was less sick in my husbands car thats high of the ground as its a 4X4.

baileys just over a year old know and only last week he spent 5 hours stopping halfway going to wales.

I know what your going though but they do get better in the end.

hope this helps,

Claire
