Kennels
« on: January 20, 2004, 10:39:44 AM »
Can anyone help with some advice please - we are meant to be going for a week in March to Spain but I don't know what o do with the dogs!!! We went away last in nov 2002 and put them in kennels but it was awful! they were in such a state when we got them back they had to be near enough shaved off and Blue ended up chewing her leg to bits. Does anyone know of really good kennels that spend time with the dogs or does anyone look after dogs in their home etc?!! I'm in wiltshire and would be glad of anyones advice or experiences really.

Hi Karen!

Sorry to hear you're one of the unsuccessful kennel stories!  :(

We use kennels for Charlie-Spud, he's been twice now, 2 weeks & a wkd later and so far so good. He's very clingy for the next few days, but gets back into his normal routine very quickly.

We'd heard/read a mixed review of kennels, have friends who use family or friends to care for their dogs and one who uses kennels, and we did consider the 'look after at home' option because they say the dog is less stressed being in their own environment. But we stuck with trying kennels first which has luckily worked out for us.

I guess it's better to have a kennel recommended and to definately check it out for yourself. We had a couple of suggestions, but after one spot check visit we didn't have a good feeling about it, then 'fortunately' couldn't get booked in! So we found one on our own, no clever method, just out the Yellow Pages, a quick call but after a spot check visit with a full look around & lots of questions we came away with a good gut feeling.
One thing that helped swing it as well was that they pipe music into the kennel area which we liked as CS has a radio in his area at home!

The kennels are also used as a show/event ground, has a training school and a hydrotherapy pool. So as a bonus, since we've been taking him swimming every other week at the hydrotherapy pool we've got to know some of the staff better, plus they've got to know CS better too!   .
Charlie-Spud 'ere, oh and this little fella Frisbee!

Hi Karen

So sorry to hear about your previous experience with boarding kennels. :(
I was head kennel girl for 5 years at a kennels in Essex, and fortunately worked for a very attentive boss who wound never have allowed that to happen.  So there are some good places out there, you just have to look for them.
:)  The best piece of advice is go out and look at them.  Weekends are best this time of year as this is when they tend to be busier so you should get agood idea for the conditions.  Makesure you see the kennels, places that hose down everyday are not a good choice for a cocker as their coats and it this that makes them very smelly.  Use your instincts if you don't like it don't go back.  Also ask around friends and family and look at recommendations.  Once you found one you like, its always a good idea to book them in for a weekend, or overnight to see how they settle, etc....

If you still don't have any joy then there is the choice of a house/dogsitter, or there are people that will have them stay in their house as one of the family.  Your vet should hopefully have some local numbers for you if you call them.

I hope that this is of help :)
