Just seen this thread.

Tia was diagnosed with a luxating patella on her left leg and she was operated on last august. She was 10 months old. The vet cut a groove into the bone so her joint wouldn't fall out of place. We'd have never had noticed this if the vet had n't spotted it. Though once he pointed it out, it was obvious.

After the op we had to keep her quite for 2 months (no walks or jumping) - you can imagine how hard that was!

Touch wood the operation has been a success and she runs around like any normal cocker. Though i must say i still keep careful watch of her rear legs (especially the left) to make sure they're alright - but then i'm  worry guts.

Good luck with jasper, i'm sure he'll be fine.

That's very good to hear that she now can run like a normal cocker

It's a worry, but he is so sweet, we will do anything for him. last year we went to a revalidationcenter (I hope that you write it so) and they make from plaster the way how his knees are. Then they make 2 braces. But the anatomic of a dog is not the same as a human. It didn't work. When he bent his knee the braces fel down to his ankle. It's a pitty, but it was worth to try.

Annemie,

Sorry to hear that the brace did n't work.

Tia's op was expensive but i don't regret it because she's a lovely dog and like you i'd do anything for my dog.

Hi Michael,

She is it all worth. Did you know that sometimes (it depends on the grade) it's heredatiry.  The orthopedic said that Joris has the heredatiry one. Our Joris got it from his mother (the breeder said no way, but I saw her in the ring and she had the very strange walk as Joris).

It was a very big show here in Holland (the winner) and she got excellent and the judge said that she had a perfect way of movement   . But here in Holland most of the time the dog isn't judge but the person behind the dog  :?

Annemie,

The vet said Tia's was hereditary.

We got her through a newspaper ad (i no that wrong!).  But she's a lovely good natured dog and very loving.  We're her third owners (she was 9/10 months when we got her) and we could n't work out why anyone would want to sell such a lovely dog. Now we know. In a sense we think of her as a rescue dog.

She's been speyed, which is what we were going to do anyway. I can't imagine not having her now.

Michael,

Our oldest is from a puppyfarm, and I most say that he is healtier than Joris with his pedigree  . So a pedigree says nothing to us.

It's so nice that Tia find such a good and loving home. You have rescue her!! If she didn't get her op she would be in a matter of time crippel. And then she didn't have such a good life. She would have much pain and discomfort. You're such a people.

Hi Ziggy,

Thank you for your concern. Yes we have tried everything (at least we hope that). In mai the orthopedic said that he had an alternative op for Joris. He could do a little rope (I'm sorry don't know the english word) over his kneecaps so that they will be in place because the other op was to heavy for him.

We took Joris then to the cardiologist for another echo of the heart. That echo wasn't that bad but she doesn't dare to say ok let's do it. The risk of anestetic are to high.

He is such a little happy dog. Since last november he has much good days. He waggle always his tail and on good he days he plays much.

We think that he has still a good life.

It's so nice of you to think with us for a solution for his knees. I hope that some day someone comes with a solution without op and anestatic.

Thank you

How is Jasper doing?
Greetings,

Sorry to hear all about these cockers with luxating patellas. Have been through all this with a friend who's cav has 2 luxating ones and know all the pain the poor thing has gone through—hers were dislocating all the time until the op (similar one to Tia's, Michael).

Have heard that hydrotherapy can also help in the long term with any other problems that may arise as a result of this.

Penny

PS I've had an op for 2 luxating patellas as well aso know exactly what its like to go through all this. In human terms excruciatingly painful but then we humans can't stand pain the way our pets do!

Cockers are just hooligans in cute clothing!

We had thinking about hydrotherapy, but when the dog is heartpatient it's not allowed  :?  Joris his kneecaps also dislocating all the time. When he sit on your lap you feel them going out of position.

Yes dogs can deal much better with pain then we are. Are your knees fine now after the op?
