Title: Elbow fracture & recovery advice
Post by: TBM2021 on March 11, 2021, 06:54:14 PM
Hi Everyone,

I’m just looking to see whether anyone has had a similar experience or has any advice.

My cocker puppy Ted 6 months old at the time fractured his elbow (humeral condylar) whilst jumping over a small stream. He had surgery and now has a pin/screw through the elbow. He was put on cage rest for 8 weeks with toilet breaks and short lead walks around the house. We went back to the orthopaedic for a follow up appointment at 8 weeks and they said that everything looked good and we could increase his walking to 3x 30mims per day, but still no jumping. The more we walk him the more he limps and holds his paw. He remains on the anti inflammatory medication due to the on and off returning of the swelling. We haven’t yet been able to walk him more than 1x 30 mins. We then end up resting him until his limp improves. Ted is now 8 months old.. absolutely wild!! I would love to hear from anyone who’s dogs have been through this surgery. Will he ever be able to return to the quality of life and exercise he had before? X

I’d want to know more from your specialist.  I’ve known a few dogs with IOHC (and i hope you’ve informed the breeder as it’s highly likely it’s hereditary).  Most dogs have recovered really well but one had recurring infections and ended up having his leg amputated.

It sounds to me, if he’s getting swelling etc, that he could be reacting to the plates.

I hope he’s ok but I would start seeking more advice as this isn’t a normal recovery.
