Kidney problems
« on: March 07, 2021, 08:44:11 PM »
Mali (13 and a half) had surgery on Friday to remove a non malignant tumour from her lower lip. Prior to the op’ she had a set of blood tests and the results threw up a problem with her kidneys. The vet said I need to put Mali on a “renal diet”. Because I was informed of this when I was collecting Mali after her operation, I wasn’t really focusing on asking questions or discussing the diagnosis at all. I called the surgery after getting home and was advised to buy Royal Canin food but other than that, I didn’t get any information.

So, can anyone help at all before I go back to the vet for a full debrief? I don’t know what the implications are for Mali or what the long term prognosis might be. I don’t know if her treats have to also be renal friendly or if she can continue with her regular stuff. I don’t know if she will need regular tests or specialist drugs. The vet who carried out the operation and who is my first choice when I need to visit, is on holiday now for two weeks and the histology on the tumour won’t be back for a week so I’m hoping there is no mad rush to take drastic action but again, I’m in the dark.

Any help would be appreciated xx

Sorry to read about Mali, no experience so I can't help but do wish you and Mali all the best.   :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

If it's any help, I do remember when I explained to  the vet I prefer to feed Minstrel a hypoallergenic, grain free diet, he said I would need to  feed the same sort of treats. I guess it would be same with renal food and treats (but I don't know  :-\ )

This may help too https://www.royalcanin.com/uk/dogs/products/vet-products/renal-special-in-loaf

Sorry to read this. The recommended prescription renal cans are depressing, rice and bland stuff. Bobby wouldn’t eat it. Recipes online are not much better. However Nutriment do a raw kidney support that sounds great. Not cheap, but a senior dog deserves luxury.

I  haven’t checked the small print, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you have to buy a batch.

I donated 24cans of unwanted Hills renal to the PDSA.
I don’t know about treats. Cheap ones are out because of high fat and salts.
I took Bobby to the vet for bad breath and weight loss. The newly qualified vet diagnosed rotten teeth, booking him in for extraction.  He had the blood test , like you and it showed a kidney problem. We had weekly urine samples.  His teeth were fine!

How did the problem manifest itself and how long did Bobby live with the condition?

Thank you for the responses so far xx

There are a variety of kidney problems. Bobby had Protein losing nephropathy, meaning that the filtration system  into the kidney was blocked. Only dialysis could have kept him going.  Tumours are easier to live with by diet and drugs.   My regular vet had retired, and  I saw  3 different vets when  I was concerned about him first coughing up bile ,  then his weight loss, and dull hair.  Finally his bad breath.  None of them seemed to read the previous notes to come to an early diagnosis. This was over two or three months. When the young vet said  bad teeth I was surprised, but opted for the pre surgery blood test, at last. No tooth or gum disease.   Then his poo became black.
He had a drug  and renal diet.  I was warned that he could live for either weeks or years. Sadly it was three months, and we made every  day special ,  and took him to the seaside, which he loved.
I’m sorry if this upsets you. This particular condition got him at 8 years old, but your girl is a wonderful age, and I hope it is just a minor, slow, age related  condition  and that diet and drugs will work well for her.
Make sure you always see your own vet, so  that it is properly followed, regular urine samples,  and research diet.   I joined a Facebook Kidney dog group, but  although it was friendly,  it was mostly American,  treatments were in different measures, and recipes  in cup measures,  so it wasn’t any help.   This was four years ago, so things may be better now. I would think there are UK support groups now.
Needless to say, I left that vet practice. I now go to a small independent one, with one vet and  devoted clientele.
Xx
Do let us know how you get on  at your  next appointment ,  and find a food that he approves of.

Thank you for your detailed and informative reply, it’s what I needed. One thing that rang a bell in what you said is the black poo. I have noticed that happening recently but I put it down to changing her from Arden Grange dried food to Lily’s Kitchen, tinned food. Having said that, now you have hi-lighted it, I suspect that it may actually be more recent than switching the food.

Mali doesn’t appear to have any issues other than joint pain and her ongoing Cushings disease which has been treated and monitored  for years now. As you say, she is a good age and I wonder how much I can realistically achieve by making the changes in diet etc in the time she has left. If she is going to be miserable and hate her life by being made to eat food she doesn’t want and deny her the treat times (which you can set the clock by!), I wonder if I shouldn’t carry on as we are. Obviously, if she was visibly ill or in pain, I wouldn’t consider it but she is happy and is restricted only by normal old age. She sleeps more now than she used to but again, given her age, that is surely to be expected.

Sadly, the vet I prefer to see is on leave for two weeks but I will make an appointment to see my second choice so that I can have a proper conversation about what they found in the blood test and how best to move forward.

Thank you xx

My girl had Kidney issues and I went thro 8 different vets, before I found one that remotely had a clue, I actually got the most help on
an fb site, the people there interpreted the results far better than the vet, and gave the correct advice and definatly kept my girl alive longer than relying on the vets, I have discovered , unless it is staring them in the face, most vets are pretty hopeless and I only realised when I did my own research and in contact with people with dogs with kidney issues. You may be lucky and find a vet, so good luck with that..I am still looking and have had pets for 60 yrs. I would heartliy recommend joining the fb site, I would also suggest yu ask for copies of ALL the tests for two reasons, one is that often its difficult to take in what the vet says and you come away with more questions with answers, and secondly you can put those test results on the FB sites and let the knowledgeable people there help you..brilliant for advice AND support and ideas
