2 lots of second puppy vaccinations?
« on: July 31, 2007, 05:37:16 PM »
Hi All

Got Fred last Friday (piccies soon I promise) and at 10 weeks old he'd already been chipped and had both vaccinations......

I thought it was a bit early but trust the breeder and therefore her vet. Been out carrying fred in a rucksack, and visiting 'safe' family dogs and was looking forward this Friday to taking him out properly in the big wide world to continue his socialisation.....

But then - I've had a free 'puppy check' at my vets (who have been fantastic with previous pets and i truly trust them) and saw a new vet. He said fred is fine BUT will need his 2nd lot of vaccinations repeating as doing it before 12 weeks means he won't have proper immunity.  I read on a post from penel on this forum that confirms to some degree what the vet said:

" The reason 2nd vaccs are done at 12 wks is because maternal antibodies are less by then. At 10 wks there is still a strong possbility that they will "cancel" out the vaccination. Some people only vaccinate once at 12 weeks old, or even at 16 weeks old because of the above.  Maternal immunity before then should protect your puppy if you take it out.  "

So - does anyone know/have any opinions on having his vaccinations twice? Can he 'overdose' on them? Was so shocked at what he said (and with it being a new vet too) I didn't want to question him. Its not the cost thats worrying me, jus is it safe (i'm guessing it is as the vet wouldn't suggest it), but more "is it neccessary?"

ANY advice or opinions would be appreciated

Steely x

I'm not sure if it's correct, but Jarvis had his 1st jab at 8 weeks, and 2nd at 10 weeks, and was considered to be fully vaccinated. He was out and about from 11 weeks with just those jabs.

I think in a situation like yours i'd follow the vets advice though...

Our vet doesn't do the 2nd vaccination before 10 weeks.

It can't be good over vaccinating. Be wary that some vets only want you to pay for the course again. ;)

Oh golly...... I hate all this vaccination stuff it really worries me. My pup just had his 1st jab at 8.5 weeks and will be having his second at 10.5 weeks the vet said he could go out a week after this.

The breeders vet said 1st jab no earlier than 9 weeks though very confusing and worrying  :-\ Why don't you call your breeder explain what's happened and ask for her vets number and get your vet to talk to her vet if they are disagreeing - at least that will flush out any issues of your vet trying to earn extra money unnecessarily?

Ours all had their first vaccination at 8 weeks and second at 10 weeks.  Suki was a rescue, so she had already had her first one and when we collected her at 10 weeks, we took her for her second jab the next day.  As we had other dogs, we figured that as they were being walked regularly, Suki was being bombarded with any germs they may bring home, so only waited a week before taking her out (the vet had advised 10 days - 2 weeks) but she was so terrified of the whole world, we still ended up carrying her a lot for the first week or so.
I agree with the others and would call your breeder and get the vets to talk to each other - if they will!
Good luck and happy walkies when you can finally go.

Ask for titre testing rather than the jabs the vaccinations themselves can cause auto immune problems.

Even with a new pup?  Would their mothers immunity provide enough to never need vaccinating at all?

Not all boarding kennels, pet carers or training classes accept titre test results either, which is a consideration for many dog owners  ;)

Ellie had 3 lots of jabs. She had her first at the breeders, when I took her for her second lot our vets didn't use the same vaccines so she had to have them done again.

I ended up registering and taking Molo back to the breeders vet to avoid this, as she took him for his first vaccination - I have never been back to them, but it was worth it  :D

Yes I'd of done the same if I'd known. The vet we saw was a visiting one, she gave her the jab and said we'd be able  take her out after a week. It was the receptionist who noticed the vaccines weren't the same and said she would have to have another in two weeks time.  So it was another three weeks before we could walk Ellie.

if the pups already had two sets of the jabs all the titre testing will do is avoid unnecessary injections and provide proof that there are the required antibodies.  Given the choice of over vaccinating or a simple blood test I'd opt for the blood test.

Thanks guys - didn't realise that something so seemingly straightforward would be so blooming confusing. Have emailed breeder and I'm going to take her up on her suggestion of phoning the vets back and asking to speak to my usual vet, then give him the number of the other breeders practice.

Our dogs have always had the puppy vacs at 8 & 10 weeks using Nobivac. Which vaccine did he use?

Personally I wouldn't want to vaccinate again if your puppy has already had 2 jabs.... Different vets seem to have different opinions on vacs and I am afraid there are those like Chelsea has said that will try and get you to pay for the whole course again. ;)
