Title: Hairy feet
Post by: irened on April 26, 2020, 06:01:08 PM
So now we are in lockdown and groomers are all closed I need to trim my boys feet. I have seen this mini clippers for paws advertised and wondered if they are any good. Also what are the quietest I can get preferable cordless.

Thanks

Well, I've always used scissors.  Doesn't get any quieter than that  :lol2:

Do you mean the Wahl Paw Trimmer? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002MJ9NN2?tag=duc08-21&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002MJ9NN2?tag=duc08-21&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1)

I'd say (based on the reviews) for a tenner it's worth a shot.  Only issues I can see are trimming with scissors first if fur is really long and getting pooch used to the sound (apparently it's fairly noisy as I suspect the majority will be unless you're willing to spend £££).

Oh...and don't trim in between the toes or pads!

I use scissors too. My cocker goes crazy when she feels the vibration of the clippers on her toes  :005: I guess it tickles  :lol2: I used to work at a vet clinic and they had some aesculap cordless small trimmers. Really good and quiet, but insanely expensive.

I also desperately need to trim my cocker's hairy feet and long nails. I'm a newbie owner, never done it before, and Lady doesn't like me touching her feet too much... she has some long hair between her toes, are we not meant to cut that??

You can lay scissors flat against the paw and cut the parts sticking out. You can even gently pull the long hair out from between the toepads and cut it. But I think the point is that you're not supposed to put clippers or scissors in between the toes as there needs to be some fur between the toepads :)

I did have to cut inbetween recently as dirt and possibly something else (?) had developed into such a hard lump it was like a stone and I couldn't find any other way of getting it out but I do think its probably a vicious circle, so I'm been very careful to make sure I get all the mud etc off now before it can dry hard.
My secret to trimming feet is to start on Humphrey's ears (always makes him go gooey eyed and sleepy) and then wait until he's snoozing away and then takle the feet, or at least one of them, at the very last  :005:. As soon as we're finished, he's allowed to race into the kitchen for a biscuit, but sometimes we have to stretch his groom over a week, during which time he tends to look very lop sided!!! : :lol2:

Hahaha can relate to lopsided dog. Home grooming takes as long as it takes  :lol2:

I have to admit I have removed hair between the toesies too  :021:  I try not to as a main rule. But sometimes it gets really thick. and if the weather is wet the paws never dry and they get prone to fungal infections. So I sometimes thin out the chunk of fur in the middle of her paw.

I can only trim my doggies feet if my husband holds onto them. Then they look at me in fear first then total disgust, followed my boredom and snoozing!

It took me about 10 sessions to get Daisy's feet tidied up.  She gets a lot of fur growing in between the pads and she negotiates treats for tolerance!  Not the neatest job, but who really wants all paws to match!
