(a brilliant subject heading that I nicked from another thread!)
.....is exactly what I am doing as I can no longer cope with Lola's hairiness. Since she has been spayed she has become extremely hairy and the amount of debris I remove everyday is getting on top of me, so she's booked into the groomers next Tuesday. But I do have a couple of questions....
If I have the whole lot taken off will it all grow back the same (ie extremely fluffy) or is there a glimmer of hope that it will grow back sleek (ie, like on her back). Hope you understand what I mean.
I don't want her back, tail, top knot ::) or ears touching, so if the rest comes off (perhaps leaving a teeny bit on her tummy and v.v. light feathering on her front legs), do you think she will look odd?
Apologies for this thread......I've posted before about her and her coat but she's only 2 1/2 and I cannot cope with it as it currently is for the rest of her life.
Thanks everyone :D

get Nic to send you some pictures of Tilly to take with you ;) I think clipping is fine, as long as you still look like you have a cocker spaniel :luv:
I don't think her coat will ever as it was pre-spaying in her youth :-\ (sorry)
-
Dear Nic
Please send pictures of Tilly........
Love Sally & Lola xx
-
Me again...sorry.
Found this picture from another grooming thread that I started in March on the same problem ::)
Its still like this but even thicker now and the amount of seeds etc that I find is unbelievable. And its brown hair which I don't like.
Going away to hide now.... ph34r

I'll dig out some photos of Tills, she got done again a couple of weeks ago and she looks fantastic, they do such a good job on her. She looks like a Cocker (or as Cockery as Tills can look anyway ph34r :005:) but she's all sleek and shiny with nice tidy feathering. I'm afraid Lola's coat probably won't ever go back to it's pre-spay state, when Tills' coat grows back between clips she looks like the love child of Tina Turner and a grizzly bear ph34r
-

:rofl1: so where does Chesney Hawkes come into it :dunno:
-
milly gets chopped very short now since she was spayed. her coat goes unruly, and like rats tails! we still keep her tail and ears fairly long though. she went for a haircut yesterday and now she looks great!
-
So are you just getting her legs, feet, sides and chest cut? Or clipped? Betty's been cut 3 times now and it just grows back exactly the same. You can see lovely black shiny hair in amongst all the gingery/brown fluffy stuff though - I just can't seem to explain to the groomer that that's all I want leaving ::) I took a picture of Jarv last time but it didn't do any good. In fact she barely looked at it, just said that all dogs were different. I've given up on groomers now and bought some thinning scissors, althogh haven't had the courage to use them yet :005:

If her toupée gets really long I can put it in a centre parting :005: The photos don't show it that well but although Tills' coat doesn't grow back quite as long as Lola's it's completely dead, fuzzy, cotton-wool textured and a dull ginger colour whereas when she's clipped she's a lovely rich shiny brown.
Ok here she is before... Tina's people called and said she wants her wig back ph34r and it makes her look fat which I HATE cos she's really not!
And after... sleek, shiny and purty... squinty eyes and hassling of ginger dogs notwithstanding :lol2: ::) :luv:

Actually you can see that last one better if you enlarge it, it shows her nice belly feathering and the shine it gives her
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa141/workingcockers/2009%20contd/IMG_4303.jpg
I give them really clear instructions - I ask them to clip off her head, neck, back, sides and armpits (cos they mat really easily) and to tidy up the fronts of her legs, her face and paws. I give strict instructions i.e. pain of death that they are not to touch her ears, chest feathering, belly feathering, leg feathering or tail. The new groomer we've found is a godsend, she was a recommendation from Elisa and she is fantastic, she even puts a little flower on Tills' lead when she's finished :005:
-
She looks beautiful Nicola, that is a very understanding groomer you have found. :D

She's brilliant, I have to book well in advance and she's not the cheapest but worth every penny, it's thanks to Elisa as she's been using her for a long time to get Bailey handstripped and Harvey clipped and they always look great :luv: http://www.puccigrooming.com/index.htm

Nicola - Tilly looks absolutely fantastic (if I post Lola up to you first class..........) - is it okay to print off your pics to show the groomer?

Helen - I absolutely roared with laughter at this.......that poor poor dog, what on earth are the owners thinking?

Bettyboo - I have no idea whether its clipping or cutting! I just leave her with him........what's best do you think?
Finally - Anybody live near me who could recommend a really good groomer? The one I use is just okay.......

Poor doggy :'( :'(

Bettyboo - I have no idea whether its clipping or cutting! I just leave her with him........what's best do you think?
If it's the same place as when you posted a photo of her then it looked like she had been cut. I've always said that I don't want the clippers anywhere near Betty but that's because her coat isn't too bad - it's just her legs I want thinning out. I wouldn't have thought you could thin out hair with clippers. Could be wrong though ph34r The last place only trimmed her feathers and took the rest out with a comb and a air blaster thing.
-
I clip Dave and don't use any attachments, I just grade it by hand if that makes sense.. I'll try and get some pics of him that show it for you and post them tomoz. He has very unmanageable legs and lots of fluff on his body, but you can make it look pretty natural easily if you clip lightly over the top of the coat rather than going in for the kill against the skin IYSWIM .
It's not a BAD thing to do... don't worry ;)

I clip Monty at home and I am happy with my amateur efforts, though I am not sure if Monty would agree!!!!! :005: His ocat got very dull and fluffy about 6 months after his de-balling op and the vet recommended Evening Primrose Oil. One large family pot of EPO capsules from Tesco (vet recommended) and a month later and he is much glossier coat that is more manageable and sleeker
Good luck with your grooming visit...I ended up doing it myself as I moved house and couldn't find a new groomer that I felt I could trust!!!! xx

Thank you, I think the lady does a fab job on her :luv: and Lola is welcome any time! Of course you can use the photos, I don't mind at all.
Tills gets that look with clipping, just scissoring her coat wouldn't make a dent in it, all that fuzz is just dead hair and needs to be clipped off to get to the healthy shiny coat underneath. The coat can be thinned out with clippers too, that's what they do to her armpits and a bit on her belly. Clipping isn't 'bad' - it's better if you can avoid doing it in the first place but once the coat is all dry, dead and fuzzy then it's the best way to tackle it.

I think if an owner requested that from me, I would have to extract a solemn promise that they told no one where they got their dog groomed ph34r :lol2:
Actually, you'd be surprised at the number of groomers who have that as an idea of a "skirt" >:( ::) If you think it looks bad on a cocker, wait till you see it on a terrier! :020: :buttkick:
-
I think if an owner requested that from me, I would have to extract a solemn promise that they told no one where they got their dog groomed ph34r :lol2:
I've done that before now too. It was a gold cocker but they liked the top knot left so floppy it was like an Afghan, and I wasn't to touch the beard (just like a billy goat) and the tail was to be left too. Trouble was that they didn't brush him as well as they should and so legs and under belly had to be clipped off. He looked hideous.
I said it in a very light hearted way "if anyone asks you where you got your dog done, please don't tell them I did it", I think they thought I was joking but I was actually deadly serious. >:(
Joules with Coco can vouch for the dogs look. ph34r

I've got one like that too - I have to leave his top knot flopping over his eyes, then leave precisely 2 inches of curly tassel hanging off the tail (docked), then I have to make sure his boy bits are completely covered with hair (owner does not want to see them ::)) but everything else usually has to be clipped off as he gets so matted. It's not a good look but the customer is always right :005:
-
Jessie has just been to the groomers - we have had to have her quite short as she is ill she can't cope with the brushing to keep the knots at bay...she looks Ok I think..... :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/speedyjaney/28072009266.jpg)
I regret having her spayed tbh cos its caused her to be incontinent and its made her coat go horrible and woolly.... ph34r

whaddya think :011:
This is my worst fear for Misha - her coat gets curlier by the day. I'm terrified to take her to the groomers as I'm sure she'll come back with the weird skirt thing going on. Most likely I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go for the full clip leaving ears and feathers only, but just can't bring myself to do it at the moment.
-
(http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p45/xflightofthephoenix/LOOOLLLAAA.jpg?t=1249489262)
Well here she is back from the groomers.
Now, I want your honest opinions.........if you don't like please say so......the only bit untouched are her ears!
-
need more pics but I think she looks fine - would prefer slightly more feathering on her legs and tum but I'm sure that will grow quickly :luv: :luv: :luv:
-
Okay, so in future bit more left on her tum and more feathering on the legs (there is a tiny bit believe it or not).
Will get DD to put a couple more pics on.

yes please cos she has the prettiest face :luv:
she looks gorgeous Sally, still like a spaniel and so shiny and black too :luv:
-
I think she looks great, really shiny and sleek and you can see her little white toes, Tills has those too :luv: I would prefer a bit more leg feathering too but she looks lovely and you'll find it so much easier to keep her clean and dry! :shades: :luv:

:rofl1: That's what you get from girl dogs ;) I, on the other hand, have plant's that are decorated at slightly higher levels >:(
-
Well I think she looks just perfect, not that I am biased about black cockers at all.
-
I think she looks very smart :luv:
but if it'd been me I'd have had the head and ear tops done too, each to their own. ;)

I did have her top knot done (a little) and as for her ears, I was on pain of death from DD, who thinks she looks like Princess Leia from Star Wars when this is done. Is that what you mean?
-
It is only my personal preference and I appreciate that the worker's head and ears are completely different in shape to the show type and so it'd probably look silly, but I think Nicola's Tilly is a good compromise.
She looks gorgeous, don't take any notice of me. ;) :lol2:

It's ok SJP - you should see the way Michele looks at Jarv's top knot (I can almost see her fingers doing thinning scissor movements.... ph34r )

We groomers can't help it ph34r :005: I even find myself looking at the dogs owners and thinking "Let me take just a little bit right off there".... :lol2:
But I would never touch Jarvs tuftie :luv:
-
I think she looks lovely :luv: I did gets Tills' head clipped this time, her top knot was getting out of control and it's not so much a cute little tuft as a full on rug :lol2: and the groomer also tidies the tops of her ears which I quite like the look of, I've seen it done on show Cockers and it's the same sort of effect, just thinning out the tops of them a bit so they don't look like they're growing out of her head at a 90 degree angle :lol2:
-
She looks very smart - though I'm inclined to agree I'd have wanted more feathering left... :luv:
I keep changing my mind on Honey... I keep looking back to pics of her as an older pup and thinking how smart she looked... but I love my little fluffy girl :luv: (although it's taking twice daily grooming to keep her looking lovely at the minute!! :shades: ).

Thank you for all your comments. On her next visit to the groomers, I will revisit this thread to take note of what you've all said. Any more comments gratefully accepted as I am a complete novice to this grooming lark.
Karma, that's why I had her clipped, I just could not keep up with the grooming.
-
She looks lovely, I think the groomer has done a great job. Can you send some of the excess fur to my two, they have hardly any!!

It will be much more comfortable for Lola without that rug on - TBH I much prefer this neater look ;) have just about managed to get Jarv's to look brown instead of gingery today - his saving grace is that his feathers aren't that long otherwise I would have relented and clipped. Some weeks he looks far better than others (and last week in his photo's it was definitely a bad hair week!) And I get sick of people thinking he's tubby when his fur sticks out on his sides :shades:

Better not let me hear anyone saying that Boy is Tubby >:( >:( How very dare they ::)
Helen, I think you could chop Jarvis with a pair of garden shears and he would still look as handsome as ever :luv:

One thing I forgot to say....how tiny Lola is without that hair, she looks so delicate and fragile now without all that hair to "bulk" her out :luv:

Have just taken the clippers to Coco today as she was a proper fluffball. >:( She is now a lovely choccie colour instead of a gingery brown colour >:( I am sure she feels much better and cooler too judging by the way she has just been running around jumping over her agility course ::) :005: I try and leave her feathering but keep it looking fairly natural. ;) It is much more practical for us and makes it a lot easier to spot matts, ticks etc :D Not that she is at all grateful ::)

Here you go - my poor effort at giving Coco a haircut :005: Don't look too closely, I haven't managed to get the front of her legs very even - we were both a bit bored by then ph34r :005:

I think you've done an excellent job, how do you manage to get to stand still for so long?
I do her very quickly :005: - she will stand still for a little while but she hates having her legs done ::) I usually do it in less than half an hour which is one reason why it is a lot less tidy than when Michele does it ph34r :005:
