Title: Diesel Has his first Grooming Appointment - WITH better AFTER PICS
Post by: c19unn on September 16, 2011, 07:42:03 AM
Hey Guys

Well........Today is the day that Diesel is going for his first haircut. He is not too bad but some of him is soooooooo unruly.
I have told the Groomer what im wanting and have this lurvely picture in my head :)
I dont know why but i feel soooooo nervous about him going - Dreading picking him up and him looking like something other than a cocker  :005:
Did anyone else have these horrible butterflys and any horror stories about grooming?

Here is some before pics:

So get his Jedward 'do' trimmed'

ph34r POOR BABY HAS UNEVEN FUR - IS IT JUST ME THAT CAN SEE THE CUT MARKS?

Betsy will be 4 months on Saturday 17th September and I have still to get her groomed.  I hope that Diesel turns out the way you want him to turn out.  You just never know what the groomer thinks they are going to do.  A bit like a hairdresser, when you say just take off the split ends and you end up with at least 6 inches taken off!!  >:D >:D ph34r

Just wanted to wish you luck.

Lots of love from Betsy and Lizzie xxx  :bigarmhug::luv::-*

There are quite a few horror stories on here about groomers who have completely shaved Cockers when that wasn't what the owner requested.

I'm sure Diesel will be absolutely fine, and it sounds like you've already told the groomer what you want done, but I think you should tell the groomer again on arrival just to be on the safe side. Is Diesel just having his paws and head tidied up and a bath? He shouldn't need too much doing at the moment as he's so young.

Yup thats what i told them - Tidy up his legs and feet, His bum and his Head as he sometimes looks like Jedward  :005:
I am Defo going to remind them when i go in - plus i told them NOT to touch his tail as if they cut off the end of his tail he will lose most of the white tipped end ...

Ill post up before and after pics :)
He is in at 12pm and your right, it is the same as the hairdressers and so thats how im worried lol

Looking forward to seeing the 'after' pics now! It's a good idea to start early and get him used to the experience. I'm struggling to find someone with cocker experience round here as we lost the lovely groomer who used to do Jess and the only other person who has been recommended is full up for now. I'm hoping Penny lasts out until this person has a place for her, otherwise I'll have to cope myself as I don't want her shaved yet! Her coat's so pretty...

Well im hoping that it goes well - I have told them that i only want him tided up as such , i will defo get the after pics up later on when i pick him up.
How long do they usually take in the groomers?
Like an hour?

Depends how much is being done - it was always at least two hours with mine.

I've still got to pluck up the courage to take Bailey - he's such a scruff, but he's my scruff, and I think his appearance goes with his personality somehow! He's bathed and brushed by me, and toes are trimmed but that's all. It's probably why most people don't know what breed he is, but I don't think he cares.

Depends on what you are having done & the coat condition.

We had a Cocker in last week his owner kept saying he wanted him Clipped but what he really meant was he wanted him Handstripped - Good job we checked!

Daisy is having her first grooming session today as well! She is nearly six months old and looks so fluffy at the moment. Thankfully, we already know the groomer as Dylan goes to her, so we know that she'll do a good job (hopefully!)  ;)
Hope all goes well for Diesel today x

Ooh Charlene - Diesel just looks so cute in those before pictures.  Hope all goes well.  TBH Pebbles is almost the same age and her coat looks about the same but haven't plucked up courage to have her clipped yet as not sure where to go.  I used to have our last cocker clipped by a mobile lady who did a lovely job but that was 8 years' ago  so not sure if she is still around.

Looking forward to seeing the after pictures.

I don't think he looks like a dalmatian at all.  He looks a little tidier than before (but I don't think he looked bad before anyway), that's all.  He looks as if he has a lovely silky coat.  I think he looks great.

Awww Charlene he is a gorgeous cocker baby :luv: :luv:  phoebe and mia had their first trim about 6 weeks ago phoebe was ok but mia was a bit wonky :005: I think that mia just wouldn't keep still (well it was their 1st time) so don't read too much in to it. Next time tell them to leave his feathers alone if that's what you want :luv: otherwise just send him to me :005: x x x

Me again! Just looked at the new photos you've added. I wonder maybe he didn't really need doing in the first place so the groomer trimmed a little more off than necessary to look like something had been done  Whatever, he's totally scrummy and looks gorgeous with shorter and longer hair and it'll soon grow back ;)

Diesel still looks gorgeous  :luv:
It looks like the groomer has clipped his back/side's too, which looking at his before pic's he didn't need doing  :016:
The hair will grow back soon though Charlene  :shades:
Perhaps take a pic next time to show the groomer exactly what you would like  :-\
Nina, my 4yr old is a black/white & she has never been clipped on her back/side's.  I just use a Spratts 76 comb to get the dead hair out from that area.  ;)

Diesel fine, hair will grow quickly.  :luv:

Personally prefer puppy trim of feet and top knot until adult coat comes in.

Hi,

I think you have a beautiful baby boy .....  bit like my Alf but with a little less black.

We keep Alf legs feathered a bit and always looks like Shaun the Sheep after a clip but a week later back to his scruffy self.  You will see by the below it always grows back

This is Alf at 11 months when we rescued him - never been clipped

He is a gorgeous boy (before and after) but I can understand your concerns. Penny is a Lynwater girl, and if I drove, I would take her back there for grooming, as her half brother goes back and looks fab. He's always just been hand stripped and even tho' he's been neutered, his coat still looks fantastic.
Penny was going to asomeone in Edinburgh, but I wasn't that happy with the last couple of visits. She went yesterday to a new lady (recomended by an acquaintance with three cockers) and I'm really happy now n- she's been properly stripped and looks much better..
Diesel is only wee and everything will grow back in - it might be worth printing off a pic of a dog you like the look of and just saying that's the length you want kept on the feathers, skirt, etc.

SteveB--you have really made me chuckle!!! Glad you have too hun.

I think Id be really upset too looking at lickle Diesels pics...but at least his fur will grow back. When I took my b.collie (aged 12) for a trim she came out totally shaved and had a poodle cut to her feet and tail  >:( so kind of know how you feel and the disappointment on collection and after  :'(

Diesel is still mega cute though  :luv: :luv:

I havent plucked up the courage to have Freya tidied up yet!!

He looks lovely before and after Charlene but I know how upsetting it can be if they have a cut you are not happy with, my 2 always have all their feathers and skirts etc as much of a show look as I can achieve, but they had an incident with Gloss paint 10 mths ago and they were both completely shaved, Belle looked like a lab pup and Monty looked like a little Great Dane, to say I was devastated was an understatement, BUT within 6 mths they were more or less back to their old selves, and now you would never know ;)
I think you will be able to trim Diesel by yourself, Cockers seem to fall into catergories when it comes to coat, the darker blues and Blacks tend to have more difficult thicker coats, and the lighter shades tend to be easier to manage, Diesel has a lighter coat and for his age in the before pics doesn't look profuse at all, you should have seen Belle (black) at 5 mths  :o Monty my Golden/Red has a much easier slow growing coat that looks much like Diesels and is easy to manage. Get him used to the table lots iof treats annd a little comb through a couple of minutes a day so he sees the table as somewhere he will get treats and then slowly work up from there, we have all made mistakes but don't worry it does grow back.
I would a comb with an elastic band to get out his puppy fluff, good luck ;) Jo

Oh dear. I really shouldn't comment here.  :shades: I personally wouldn't have gone anywhere near his coat with clippers. It's thin and mainly White and really didn't need it at all. A slight trim up is all that was needed. I may have stripped his back a little to tidy if it was needed, but all this would have been discussed with you before hand. I too have the same problem as Sarah at times, but it only takes a good discussion with the owner to get exactly what they want and I also have a form for them to fill out including the groom that is signed at every visit, so we're all sure. I do think though it's shouldn't have been difficult to understand the difference between a slight trim and a clip off. Hmmm just a slight difference.  :shades: :005: The good thing though is it's hair and it grows. He'll be back to himself in no time I promise.  ;)

Know exactly how you feel, Misha's first trim was awful.  They said that they would handstrip but they clipped instead.  Thankfully it did grow back nicely so don't worry too much.

After Mishas first clip
(http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/oo60/littlebudha/IMG_0953.jpg)

After a few months she got a good shine to it - I just kept on top of it myself with a comb and an elastic band.

However now that she's been spayed her coat has to be clipped otherwise she resembles a woolly bear  :luv:

Oh Diesel looks like my Jodie

This was Jodie after her trim at about 9 months & like Diesel is very light coated on her back so she is only every hand stripped.

Not sure if this would be of any help to Cocker owners that would like to learn how to clip & trim their own cockers but I would be more than happy to offer one to one instruction over the winter months when I am not so busy myself.

I am based in South Cheshire but very close to Staffordshire & Shropshire borders so if you are prepared to travel to me, quite happy to cover h/s, clipping and combination clipping/h/s suitable for spade cockers that you would still like in a show style trim.

Pm if you are interested
