What Spratts comb is it you thread the rubber band through?  I have a 76, but teeth too close for that.

Other question - do people showing cockers not use stripping knives at all?  Had assumed they do?

I have an elastic band threaded through my Spratts 72 comb (narrow teeth with a handle, not quite as narrow as the classic 76 though) - it works great for me :shades:

I never use a stripping knife on a show dog but there are some who do - just as some use clippers and coat kings and other "short cuts". I don't like the look of coats done with these kind of tools and was taught there are no short cuts to a properly hand stripped coat so that's what I stick to :D

Thanks, Jane.  Will get a 72 i think.

Interesting!  Only showed my two (and in very limited capacity) in South Africa and think I got away with less 'skilled' grooming  as few cocker specialists.  But had thought the stripping knife was a tool used by skilled groomers on cockers - not used one myself.   Interesting all the different types of grooming. The americans seem keen on a very short, almost clippered, artificial look - always wonder what uk judges think of that if any are entered over here.

Yep a 72 is what I have with the elastic band too. I have threaded a few 76 for myself & others, but it does make you go a bit cross eyed and I had to use a card to push the band down into the comb.  :005: To be honest the 72 works equally as well and a lot easier to thread.  ;) The only time I use a stripping knife is slightly for carding areas. NEVER for stripping itself!! Lots of folk use all sorts. I pick and choose what advice I follow.  ;) For me you can't beat HAND stripping.  :shades:

It tells you how many teeth per inch each comb has here, if that helps :

Ooh the intrigue this has caused Emma  :lol2:
Its the comb in the 2nd link Jenny put on from groomers, this is a newer version of the one I used on Charlie, a friend of mine bought one and it does the same job, it doesn't cut the coat in any way and works in exactly the same way as a Spratts comb, I find it much easier as it has a handle and follows the contours of the body easily, just make sure its got some hair in it so it grips the coat, there's a definite knack to using it but once you get it its fab  :D

Ahh interesting. Basically very similar to a Spratts then, but with a padded handle. We have combs like that at home, but older with wooden handles. Maybe I will try it, although I do love my sprats. ;)
