Does anyone let their dog swim in a canal? and is it safe?

I live right next to a canal and often walk my dogs there - but I put Jimmy onlead to go past the bits where he can sidle into the water. It looks filthy in there and when he has managed to sneak in, he has come out stinking to high heaven. Also I've seen rats in there, it just doesn't seem healthy to me. I certainly wouldn't swim in it.( I did go swimming in the Leeds/Liverpool canal when I was young and stupid though and even worse, the Mersey estuary.)

Hi - I seem to be in the minority here but I have Ben clipped as short as he can go - infact had him done this week and he looks like a pathetic skinned rabbit!!! :o

Yes the bits Billy has clipped are v short. What colour is Ben?. Billy is black/tan so i think you can get away with it more if they are black. I have seen a golden cocker near me clipped like billy and he looks awful whereas IMO Billy looks much better clipped.

Oh wow!! She looks great!! Wish I could cope with Jessies coat that long.

Jessies coat is wayyyy more woolly and difficult, she is off for a short back and sides on Saturday...we have to give in...the matts and knots are embarressing and I cant manage to do her properley myself so back to the groomers it is.

This is Jessie tonight...look at those feet....  ( I mean Jessies not my slippers lmao   )

Don't think Billy could go much shorter.

See attached pic  ;)

Your dogs are all gorgeous... makes me want one is every colour!!

We took Jem at about 15 weeks to the groomer mainly to get her used to being handled and to show her off as she gave me great advice before we got our pup. She advised that as she was not a show dog is would be easier on me and Jem to clip her. She gave her a quick trim and even now she looks very cocker like. I like her coat to be longer but we may need to give up on this after she is neutered!

Dad's cocker is clipped really short like Billy with some feathers. He goes in looking like a wooly mammoth and come outs out half the size. I think he looks better short as you can see all his lovely roan markings.

I've looked at the georgeous pic of Billy - and yes Ben is much much shorter!!
If I could figure out how to put a photo on I would show you.

Ben is all black - but his dad is black and tan and I've got a soft spot for them - Billy looks so sweet :)

Just imagine a cocker with a short back and sides and you will get the picture - someone asked me today what breed he was and said that he looked 'a bit like a spaniel!!!'  I told them he was a Hungarian Water Hound and they just nodded wisely - perhaps this is a sign he is to short?
