Black Vs Gold
« on: October 05, 2005, 07:37:26 PM »
as we are starting to look for a new pup, we have both been condidering getting a solid colour pup this time, but we can't decided between gold and black. I was told that blacks are much more difficult to groom and handstrip as they have more hair and it's coarser. Is this generally the case?

We haven't definately settled on a solid colour yet though, obviously depends on the right litter coming up.

Generally yes blacks do have much more coat - but you can get red's with very heavy coats too and some blacks with more slight coats.

You should be able to get an indication by asking the breeders what they would expect the lines to produce. ;)

Many golds/reds have lovely almost self stripping coats like my Buddy does but also like my Buddy have very heavy feathering that takes some looking after. Some will have coats that demand more stripping but have lighter feathering. Sadly there is no guarantee that any colour will produce a type of coat.

I swear my gold's coat grows overnight. I coat king him weekly, trim him weekly, and his coat is thick like a teddy bear. He's MUCH flluffier than my orange roan, Indie, who olny needs brushing not trimming.

I have 2 blacks - Saffi doesn't have a coat worth mentioning and only the smallest of feathering while Max has a fluffy, curly coat that needs a lot of grooming

I have a solid black and I couldn't find a groomer who would attempt to hnad strip her because her coat is so thick and curly. It grows overnight  :o  But it's lovely and soft and silky.
