Hi Sam,

Saffie has been speyed and I had her clipped at ages ago. I didnt really like the look as it was a bit too harsh and now winter is getting nearer i wouldnt get her done. I think tomorrow I will try the hand stripping. I have seen lots of lovely pics on here where cockers have smooth heads but I think Saffie will always have the wild look about her. I chopped loads and loads off the last few weeks and managed to get it looking smart, she then shook her head and it puffed back up in volume  :005:

I would go with the coat king.  Barney was incredibly fluffy and the coat king worked wonders on him, I was shown to use the Mikki blue stripping knife on Jades head as well as hand stripping as she is not keen on me doing her head.  It worked amazingly well.   ;)

Rich, As far as I'm aware after speying handstripping is virtually impossible.  :-\  I think that doesn't happen overnight, its when the hormones are removed, so she may well have some still left at the moment as she can't have been done that long ago. Tbh I think you'll struggle the the banded comb, to get everything out, particularly as she's been clipped too. I had spent hour and hours with the banded comb and I did get piles out fluff out of him each time, enough to fill a nappy sack (i use for poo bags) each time. I'd filled about four of those before AnnieM saw him, and as she says in the post above, he was still incredibly fluffy. I used the coat king, for a couple of hours in the workshop and all his fluff on his back was gone.  :D
I would think you may get away with using the coat king now, but ultimately I think clipping may be your only option. Thats why I'm avoiding castrating Barney.

The lady running the workshop did say that out of all the colours of cockers, if you were going to clip the blue roans look the best. Perhaps try and find someone who will clip her as you would like her done. If she's been clipped once then I would think her puppy fluff will have already gone from her back, maybe not from her feathering. Once speyed coats to do very wooly, very much like puppy fluff but thicker.

Sam

Only just seen this thread - Barney looks absolutely stunning  :D  In fact, they both do, beautiful

Must get the coat king out myself this week-end, Scooby is looking at bit bedraggled.  His coat is an absolute nightmare, I use thinners on his head and the coat king elsewhere.  He's got a really woolley difficult coat  ::)

When I went to see Misty last Sunday the breeder says she looks like she's gonna have a thick coat (I know the blacks are supposed to have more coat anyway) - looks like I'll be spending hours grooming

Thanks Joanne.   :D  I'd read alot on here that blacks have really thick coats, but Barney's coat was way fluffier/thicker than AnnieM's Jade. I'm learning that it can be so different from dog to dog. The coat king is definitely a god send when they are fluff balls like Barney.

I was suprised at how soft and fluffly all her hair is after she was clipped at 16 weeks. She was speyed nearly 2 months go so I am not sure if it is just her puppy coat that has grown back or if now she is speyed she is becoming wooly. I am off to PAH tomorrow to buy a Coat King and see what difference that makes. I will never be showing saffie but want her to look more smart than scruffy. When I did use the comb and rubber band I did get a fair bit of fluff off her. I have spoken with a new groomer that has just opened up round the corner and she has suggested clipping saffie but not with such a short blade. I want her to still have some fluff left but shorter than it is at present.

I will post some after pictures over the weekend and hopefully she will look less fluffy!

Don't think you'll find a coat king in P&H. I have only seen tham on line.

I agree Annette, I've never seen them in PAH, its a more specialist grooming piece of equipment. This is the ONE I got.

I shall have to investigate as I went to 3 different pet stores/shops and found an array of grooming products. One or two look straight forward and others look rather scary. I have combed alot of fluff out of Saffie today and will continue with that plus the two items i bought today also.

Hi

I was really impressed with your results where did you find out about the workshop? Do they run them nationally?

Thanks

Hi everyone

We have had Jack clipped a few times at a groomers local to me but we have never been totally satisfied with it.  We tried to have a go ourselves but he get matted so quickly no matter how often we groom  him!  He is a black solid, im very interested in a workshop - where did you get the info from - im new to cockers online so any ideas would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Nichola

Hi Oscar2006 and nm760

The grooming workshop we attended was held at MyPetStop in Leeds. There are only two MyPetStops in the UK at the moment, the second is in Manchester. Triple A in the north east is owned by the same company.

I am not sure as to whether grooming workshops are held anywhere else but Leeds. The lady who holds them is the head groomer in Leeds and she is also a lecturer at Bishop Burton College.

I don't know where abouts in the country you are so I don't whether its an option for you. If it is contact them on 0113 2202840 and ask for details on a grooming workshop with Lynette. She does them as and when people request them, and will show you how to groom for showing, or how to groom for a pet cut either handstripping or clipping which ever you choose.

Both Jade and Barney look fantastic. Hurley is was very similar to Barney pre-strip!!! And Im definately inspired to get Hurley done - he is like a big bear at the moment and Im pretty sure his puppy coat is all but ready to be stripped off. Although I dont intend to show him I dont want him clipped and I definately want to keep part of his top knot in place  ::)  ph34r

Bearing in mind that the photo below was taken at the beginning of August and we are now at the end of October - there's definately an awful lot of grooming to be done... I do try and brush/comb him every other day or so my only concern is that the matts might be deeper set than I am brushing. I did try and cut his hairy feet a while back and now they look ridiculously tiny compared to the rest of his hairy body!!!!

Its a shame you guys don't live closer - I'd be happy to give Hurley to you to practice on!!!  :D  Any hints and tips would be much appreciated...

Hi

Thanks for the info I live about 30 miles from Leeds so will definately give them a call.

Hopefully Oscar will be looking sleek and tamed rather than wild soon.

Caroline, what a gorgeous pic of Hurley.  :luv:

Barney was just like that, but probably even a bit more fluffier!  AnnieM couldn't believe it when she saw him for the first time!  :005: I can't believe that he's got the same white side burns that Barney had, I used to call him Amos Brearly (a character from Emmerdale a long long time ago who had massive side burns)  :005:

I'm like you, I don't want to show Barney but neither do I want to clip him. I've only seen a couple of golds clipped but I really didn't like the finish at all. Our tutor said the best colour for clipping is blue roan and the worst is gold, thats not to say that a good finish is impossible on a clipped gold it just more difficult to get it.

How old is Hurley? Typically the puppy coat is ready to come out 7 to 9 months I think. Barney's was coming out at 5 months, which was really early. Thats one of the reasons I didn't go diving in and removing it all as I was a bit unsure whether it really was ready.  From about four months old he developed a rich gold streak down his back and that was gradually spreading over his body.

Have you got a Coat King? As you're not going to show him its the easiest and quickest way to strip out the puppy fluff. I had one, and had used it once but I wasn't sure how long to keep going with it as it was bringing out so much fluff. Well the answer is keep going until it stops bringing out the fluff. Use it on his back and sides but not his skirt, legs, chest and back end. I didn't want a top knot but I didn't find the coat king easy to use so I hand strip his head.

If you don't want to use a Coat King you can use a comb with a rubberband woven through it. I used that for quite a while, it did get alot of fluff out but it was taking quite a long time.

Barney had a beard which was really long, I removed that using thinning scissors. When you use thinning scissors you need to cut up or down the hair growth direction and never across if that makes sense. After I trimmed the beard off, by holding his head up and cutting upwards I also took of the long hair above the breast bone, below is left as feathering.

At his back end I trimmed back the hair above the "rose", which is like a crown, with the thinning scissors up to his bum and trimmed his tail (it docked). I also trimmed that back of his hocks again with the thinning scissors.

His feet we again done with thinning scissors. A cockers foot is described as "cat like". I was quite shocked at how much hair was to come off as they are taken right back. Pull up the hair thats between his toes so that it sticking up. Then trim upwards from the front edge onto the top of the foot. You'll also need to trim away the underneath of the foot in between his pads too. I use a pair of smaller blunt ended scissors for that.

The top of his ears will need trimming with the thinning scissors in a downward direction. Its a bit difficult to describe the effect you are wanting to achieve.  :-\

The front of his front legs can be handstripped or done using a stripping knife.

I think thats those are the main things. I got the dvd by Jackie Marris-Bray about handstripping a Cocker, you're more than welcome to borrow it if you'd like. PM me your address if you'd like it sending.

Hope this helps a bit.
