Alfie is 18 weeks ,and i may come across as being a complete wally but in certain lights Alfie`s coat looks quite brown he is quite fluffy and i suppect he needs his first trim is this because of a change in coat ,puppy coat does not seem to be falling out though is this normal in the black coated cockers.sorry to seem dim

At 18 weeks he is still full of puppy fluff and I suspect that this is what the brown hair you can see is  :) It's probably not ready to give yet but you can try  ;) Use a pair of Marigolds, I cut the fingers off mine and just use the finger parts. Get a little bit of hair between your finger and thumb and pull, I would imagine that you probably won't get much out yet, but you can get him used to the sensation by doing this at an early age. It's very satisfying learning to groom yourself  ;) be patient this woolly mammoth stage deosn't last long and you will find when it is ready to give it will come out fairly easily  :)

ar thanks for that reply Gilly he`s so fuffy he`s more like a teddy bear, have tried to pull some but it`s not giving, problem is the grass seems always wet or damp and so are his little feet then we are blessed with the damp dog smell each time he goes out.,also he loves!!! to roll around on the grass  it needs cutting at the moment so he gets damp easily

On a black, brown hair is usually dead or sunbleached coat.
You'll be lucky if at 18 weeks it is ready to come out yet, be patient in a few months time you will have a sleek jet black grown up !  :)
