Another question - what age did you start clipping your dogs , ive got Douglas who is 7 months old and is just a bundle of puppy fluff would you start to clip him now or wait until his full coat comes through ?

Interesting thread this; I'll be tackling the same question when Bella's a bit older. I love all the photos, especially the before and afters of Baja & Mole.  :luv:

We started clipping Harvey at 7 months as he was such a mud magnet, we knew we were not going to show Harvey and he was going to be castrated so saw no point in handstripping so clipping was the best option for us.

This was a before

and then after

It did take a while for us to get over the initial shock as he came back about half the size he went but over time we have shortened the feathering and in summer months leave the feather on the sides and chest but get his belly all clipped out to help keep him cool...

I'd wait until his sleek adult coat has come through before you decide, you'll probably find it's a lot easier to manage; less of a sponge and much, much easier to get debris out of, particularly if you keep on top of the grooming. Stevie's puppy coat was a nightmare as it was so thick but her adult coat causes no real trouble at all.

My 3 are all neutered now so I use a combination of clippers, thinners and coat king - I leave the feathering as long as possible and don't really find it much of a problem ( then again maybe I'm not as house proud as some of you  :lol2: ). One tip I was given was to brush before walks, it makes it easier to get twigs, leaves etc out of the coat.

Can you please explain me what is happening after neutering the dog with it's coat?

Can you please explain me what is happening after neutering the dog with it's coat?

The hormonal changes after neutering alters the texture of the coat and it tends to grow thicker & fluffier and handstripping is no longer possible - the colour can fade too. The extent of the changes varies from dog to dog and some colours suffer worse than others. I posted a couple of photos on THIS thread that show how Jimmy's coat altered.

Amazing change, although Jimmy is a stunning boy!  :luv:
Any idea how this can affect a black coat? Is it the same visible as golden? If yes, how does it turn to be?

Maybe the owner of a black cocker could advise better on that one.  :lol2:

To illustrate how the coat is so much easier to deal with after the puppy fluff has gone, here's Stevie at 7½ months ( a similar age to Dennis) - she needed brushing 3 times a day to keep the knots and tangles at bay and soaked up water like a sponge...

Here she is a year later with her adult coat, which is really easy to maintain ( she doesn't take ages to dry and any debris pulls out easily)...
