how do we get a glossy coat....
« on: February 03, 2011, 08:26:13 PM »
Hello
Im sure this has been covered already but i cant seem to find it.... Nell is 16 months old and healthy in every way, but, she hasnt got a very glossy coat, it isnt even shiney. She has JWB to eat, she doesnt have treats, just a little piece of the food for rewards which she seems content with. I know you can add a little oil to her meal to promote a glossy coat but would a teaspoon of olive oil do, or must it be cod liver oil capsules. I had heard that the odd egg would help but when i googled that it said that egg white is undigestable to dogs ,
Many thanks in advance....

Yes, you can use olive oil, but you will probably get better results from fish or salmon oil. (Don't use cod liver oil, doesn't have the right "oils" in it, and will probably make her poo more) They can have whole eggs on occasion, raw or cooked, wont hurt them  ;)

You can also use a soft boar bristle brush to brush the shorter hair on her body to help bring the natural oil up.

What colour is she?

Hi sharon. Thanks for that, is that readily available from petshops? My two old springers had a very very varied diet (their own food plus anything and everything) and had beautiful coats but their toileting was always messy. With little Nell i started as i meant to go on and she just has JWB, with no treats except a little piece of the kibble to reward her. She knows no different,  and is very very happy with this, but, she hasnt a glossy coat. I thought with it being a complete food it would contain everything. I have just got her the ocean fish one hoping that may improve it. I know a glossy coat isnt everything
Thanks again

I buy it direct from Fish4Dogs, their prices now include p&p and I've always found them very quick with their deliveries.

When we first got Sonny he had a dull coat and dandruff, I got some Burns ocean bites for him (I think one a day is plenty) and added a bit of olive oil to his food, his coat and skin seemed to improve within days. We've since switched to Orijen food (from purina pro plan) and he doesn't have the olive oil or fish treats very often but his coat is still super shiny. I tried him with salmon oil but found that it left him smelling very fishy.

My boy Murphy is on the Fish4dogs salmon, he loves it and it really helps keep his coat in tip top condition. Their deliveries are very quick and their customer service is faultless too.

You could also give a small tin of pilchards in tomato sauce as a meal one or twice a week.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention did not see it....

But i am not a stickler for sell buy date (LIKE the wife is)...But cod liver oil is a (preservative) and would go past any sell buy date...Chris

We have cod liver oil that we give to the horses that we get from Holland and Barret that has been out of date for ages and it has never been a problem to the horses..(we do not give this to are dogs)..Only the powered garlic....that we sprinkle on top there food...
