What Type Of Slicker Brush?
« on: February 13, 2005, 09:27:18 PM »
I could use some help ;)

I have been using a puppy slicker brush for Lottie until now.
I'm finding that it doesnt quite get through her coat.
She is 10 months, should I be looking at a slicker for an adult dog and if so which one.
I've looked on the Hub International site and there are so many to choose from.
Would a metal toothed one or a rubber toothed one be best? and what make do people find work best?

Thanks :)

I use 2 at the moment, Ive got a large Doggyman one, and a Mikki one.  They both have the metal prongs, but are very soft.  Ive had a few, but find these are the ones for me.  I think the Doggyman was from Hub and the Mikki one for that matter. :)

I don't think that slickers are meant to go right through the coat, you need to comb through the coat & then use the slicker just to try & make the coat look tidy  :)  Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for the replies.
Maybe all I need is a slightly bigger one then.
I'll get the hang of this grooming eventually

Another one here who uses the slicker, then the comb   .  Morgan's hair is so thick that I can't get anywhere near it with a comb unless I got through it with the brush first.  Mind you, I don't really use a wide toothed comb just the spratts one.

I got one of those combs with rotating teeth  :D  but they rattle about in the handle so much that my boys are more interested in finding out where the strange noise is coming from than sitting still to be groomed so I gave up trying to use it

I use a Lawrence soft touch one, as I bought one but the pins were far to hard. I always comb first...BUT...Buttons does not have a very thick coat so I can comb it quite easily  :)

Hi Gilly,

Where did you get the soft touch slicker? Lilly hates the slicker brush have been looking for a softer one, but cant find one anywhere  :(

I cant say I blame her for not liking the 2 I have got as when I tried to get the hair out of one the other day it stuck its sharp little pins into my thumb and made it bleed, trust me    :D

I took the boys to be groomed on Saturday, to my friend who has just recently qualified (an excuse for a catch up as well as getting the boys tidied).  She used the slicker brush on the boys first,  I couldn't believe how much Neo seemed to enjoy this so I rushed out and bought another one today.

Word of warning though, when she got to Jovi, she accidentally scratched his chest with the slicker as his fur is so much thinner!!  Luckily Jovi is a tough little man and didn't even seem to notice :)

I agree the little pins are very sharp, even on Lotties puppy one.
Her coat is thick on her belly but quite fine and thin on her back where I have coat kinged her.
I'd be interested in the softer slicker....are the prongs made from rubber, I have seen this sort.

I use the lawrence ones, they are much softer.  I always put my hand the other side so that I can feel the pins, that way I know that Iam  getting right through the coat.
