Orange roan coat care
« on: December 12, 2011, 09:58:55 AM »
Hello there!
For the ones owning orange roans  :luv:

I know this coat type is usually not as thick as blacks, less hair, but how do we keep it looking bright & clean?
Is it hard work? Any tips?

Thanks
Julie

I have an orange roan who is a complete mud babe and everytime she goes out she'll come back with mud caked everywhere, from her ears down to her feet but other than running an outside tub with enough water in to reach her underbelly and legs thats as much as she gets generally. She's now 3 and in that time I think she has only ever had about 3 full baths. She scrubs up well and her light coat helps her dry out easier.

Not all oranges have thinner coats than blacks :005: We've had several oranges with very thick coats - it just depends really as we've also had finer coated dogs. Ours have never been treated very differently to other colours - we've found with regular grooming, any mud/dirt brushes out quite easily but with orange show dogs, you might need to use a brightening shampoo for white coats as some oranges are prone to staining (not ours luckily)

I have an Orange boy and he has an extremely heavy coat, much more than Phoebe, my blue girl. I just treat it the same way and he always looks ok (once the mud has dried and brushed out) :005:

Thanks Jane...that's why I said, "usually"....as I saw many threads with oranges with thinner & others with thicker coats
thanks for the brightening shampoo tip...I've also thought that should be needed something to brighten it especially if shown!  :D

Scarlett has some normal tears not colored though....Are there any dogs with colored tear stains? Especially in bright colors it does not look nice...I hope I am explaining it correctly....

Charlie follows after his Mum and has quite a fine coat, he keeps quite clean and like others have said mud/dirt brushes out quite well. He got a tiny bit fluffy whilst growing up but never too bad (not bad after having Toby anyway :005: ) but it was all his puppy coat and now he's got a nice flat coat. Here's some pictures,

Like Bronte, Jinley loves the mud and water  >:D >:D

She doesnt need many baths though, she seems to dry white after a good nap!

Nope - some of us have fluffy oranges!

Thankfully Jasper doesn't like the mud as much as the other 3!  and he's a lot older now and clipped!

Maddie has a fine coat and it really easy to manage she dries in minutes and thankfully stays fairly clean although she always looks filthy after a run compared to the others...but it brushes out easily
