Title: Piper from Many Tears - Our New Baby
Post by: PatAndPaul on March 16, 2013, 06:41:40 PM
Yesterday we picked up Piper from Mary P. Piper was ex breeding cocker, with quite a sad story with the way she was being treated.
She has appeared to be extremely sweet, loving and most grateful girl ever. I can't believe how quickly she has settled in with us and how happy she appears to be! We have a Newfoundland girl and 2 ragdoll cats and all seen to get on so well! I gave her a bath this morning and she was ever so good with it, she looks beautiful!
We went shopping today, got her new bed, new collar, plenty of dog shampoos and grooming stuff, and a Royal Canin food, which I know is good as Lilly (newfie) has been on it for years. She is a real tail wagger;), she appears to be very well behaved. She follows me everywhere in the house. She loves walking and being outside generally. Today she has been snoozing with Paul on the sofa, snoring louder than he was! Loving her already and I can't believe how well she's settled in over space of a day! Only problem still is house training, she did wee at night, even when I took her out before sleep time. I know it will take time to teach her toilet behaviour. I kind of hope she will copy Lilly at some point. Any advice reference toilet training would be appreciated.
Thank you Many Tears and Mery P!(http://)

Well done Pat & Paul and Lilly the Newfie  :004: :004: on rescuing the gorgeous Piper  :luv:

I too have an ex MT breeding cocker, Bella  :luv: to add to all the usual bad condition that MT find them in Bella is also blind and was very shut down when we got her  :'( But she has been with us a year and a half now and she has come on in leaps and bounds....they are very rewarding  :luv:

With regard to toilet training we found putting Bella out every couple of hours worked, she soon got into the routine and now when you tell her to have a wee she will, same as my other dogs.

Looking forward to some Piper pics but one of Lilly would be good too .....I looooove Newfies  :luv: :luv:

Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Yay for you and Piper  :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv:
We have Lara from MT's and she is the best girl ever!!  It is so rewarding to watch them develop into real dogs, and their personality starts to shine through.  Well done you  :bigarmhug:  Toilet training is lots of trips out to the garden and be prepared to hang around a lot!!!  Your exisiting dog will help a lot, it amazed me how much Lara picked up from our two.  Naughty habits first of course  :005:  To be honest, it was just a time thing, and even now, Lara doesn't really ask to go out, her indication is very subtle, so we still tend to make sure she is outside regularly.  Looking forward to hearing how Piper gets on and some piccies would be lovely please  ;)

Thank you for all advice re toilet training, I have been already doing quite few trips there and back to the garden with her and it does seem to be better.  :D
I am so proud of Piper and how well she's been coping, it must be such a big thing for her, being a breeding dog, going to MT, then foster house, then us... Being spaded, having operation... All these things that happened to her recently... We don't have kids and so we are giving her all of our love and attention and it's already paying off. She's just such a wonderful and grateful dog, my little sweetie pie!
Makes me laugh how she wonders around when being walked, sniffing EVERYTHING, never putting her nose up the ground:)

Loving this website/forum too- it's so nice to meet you all and share the experiences...
Lilly (Newfie) is such a great dog too, very placid, no issues since puppy whatsoever, we were lucky and got her from a good (and I mean good hearted) breeder. We also have 2 cats they all get on with Piper so well. House is like a little Arc or zoo but it's our beloved zoo :)(http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o699/pandphand/D4BD9FEF-9B2D-4CE1-A77D-FD64C985A640-8676-00000350692BD89D_zpsca2e00d8.jpg)

I also have a Piper from MT (mine is a blue roan and tan girly) and she has been with me for over 4 years now and her house training is extremely hit and miss  >:D She will wee prety much anywhere given the opportunity and I have lost count of how many times she has weed on my pillow when I have got up in the night to go for a wee myself  >:( :005:

But to manage during the day wees, I used a key word which she has definitely learnt and I can ask her to go out for a wee now. She will however squeeze out whatever is left if I dare to leave her and go out (she is left in with the other dogs, in comfort, with choices of beds/sofa, etc!) but her separation anxiety definitely makes her wee (she even wees if I leave the house for 60 seconds to get something from the car!)

I adopted my Dippy Daisy from MT - she was Irene.  She makes me laugh everyday at her antics and I can't imagine life without her.  Because of Daisy's background I started fostering -  and somehow acquired a lab too! :lol2:  Current cocker is the delightful Peter Pan.  He's coming on well and has discovered the 'puppy' he's never had the chance to be before. :luv:  Will be doing an update on MT site soon.

Have a very happy life in your new home Piper. xx

My dogs are Remy & Jade.  I'm so glad you had a look on COL it's a great place for cocker advice and general fun. Piper is. such a lovely girl and she is in the right hands to encourage her forward into the rest of her life. Lilly is just  :luv:  When pip as I believe you are calling her new has settled in with you we will have to organise cocker walk on the Likey Hills.

Hi Everyone, :luv:
Piper is doing very well, she has become my girl already, she follows me everywhere perhaps because I have been there with her for most of the time, giving her attention she needs. Even Paul has noticed that Piper loves her mommy more than daddy at the moment, lol. :D Toilet training is still a bit of a hit and miss. She stays clean over night somehow, but then if I leave her for 2 hours in a day, she will do a toilet in the house, that includes both types of it...:/ But I am patient with her and I know that one day she will learn to go outside by copying Lilly as she mainly does anyway.

I recorded this video few mins ago:

She becomes happier and happier dog every day, it's so rewarding seeing her wagging her tail in the morning when we come downstairs. She is a little ball of joy :) She met most of the family already too, and she also perceives herself to be a house guard by barking at anybody new coming to the house. This makes a nice change actually as Lilly never barks! She loves her walks and she now fully reacts on her name, which she did not at the start at all. Me and Paul were focusing over the last few days on training her to react on her name by calling her from one room to another and rewarding her with cooked chicken (which she loves) each time she came around. It worked!

I will be updating on progress.

And Sharon, I do apologise - I did think that Mery P was you due to Mery P doing the updates on her on the forum. Thank you all for positive messages... Xxx

Piper has settled in so well.  I love the tail  :luv: so sweet.  I think you have worked wonders in the few days she has been there.  Toilet training will take a bit of time.  Lara took a good wee while to sort out, but largely my fault, as her signs were so subtle I didn't pick up on them for a bit.  My two boys were much more obvious!!  :lol2:Lara is a mummy's girl too  :005: and cooked chicken is one of her favourite things.  Thanks for the lovely update, it is so good to be able to follow their progress.  :bigarmhug:

Bit confused... I started the thread, by copying from MT site. I didn't foster her, so you must have picked up from another Mary P??

Just to add... I've had 4 dogs from MT, 3 of them ex breeders. You sometimes get a 'honeymoon' period, where they are just grateful to be with you, with their not so endearing little habits occurring later. Don't worry if your perfect little girl gets less perfect for a while! She'll come back round.  :luv:

They both got back full off snow around their leg fur (it sort of stuck to it and they ended up having those balls of snow attached to them that made it look as if they were cartoon poodles, plus they both struggled to walk because of it at the end of the walk, it was so funny to watch) and I ended up bathing them, Piper took me 30 mins with drying etc. Lilly 1.5 hrs (!), but they are both lovely fluffy looking doggies again :)

And a nightmare dog to clean:

Piper's tail  :luv: Lovely to see it constantly wagging  :luv:  She has settled in so well with you, and is coming on a treat.  Lili is stunning, but my goodness that is quite a job getting her bathed  :lol2: There must be water everywhere when she shakes  :005:  Stunning girlie, you just want to give her a big cuddle, she looks so soft and snuggly.  :luv: Great video clip, lovely to see.

Loving your Newfie in the bath!

We have 2 MT ex breeding cockers and I can honestly say that they are wonderful!  So rewarding, so much fun and we adore them (even when they are being naughty which is quite often!).  You girl looks so happy - congratulations!
