Title: Private Messages
Post by: Mary on January 06, 2004, 02:00:56 PM
I have ticked the boxes in my profile to request to be notified of a new private message and also ticked for a pop-up box for notification.

I don't seem to get any notification at all :?:   (Apologies to those who have PM'd me and I have responded promptly  )  The message at the top of the forum screen remains as 'You have no new messages' even when I have :?:

Do you use AOL Mary? Or another ISP.
Could be a cookie problem, I'll have a look around to see if I can see anything at fault.
Anyone else getting this error?

Stuart

I just asked Gilly to PM me and it worked :? so perhaps my eyes need testing :?

I don't get the pop up box though but Gilly wondered if I have a pop up killer installed.  Jim recently installed Norton Internet Security so could that have come with one?

Hope I've not been wasting your time

I'm not sure about Norton (we had to remove our Norton because it conflicted with everything!) but yes a pop up killer would prevent the pop up box from displaying correctly.
As Cassie says hitting F5 or clicking Refresh should show you the latest version of the page. Windows sometimes relies on the cache to show pages (which on a forum go out of date quickly) so a refresh should do the trick and show you if you have any messages too.
Not wasting time at all Mary, it's good to hear the problems so that in future we can have a FAQ about how to resolve them.

Do you get a message saying the message hasnt been sent, or do the message simply stay in your outbox rather than go to your sent box - if the latter, then it's because messages arent sent until the recipient logs in?

Emma, do you mean you still get the PM but you dont get a pop up box, or you get email saying a pm has arrived but there are none in your inbox?

If it's only the pop up alert you dont get and you dont have a pop up killer enabled, then I'm wondering if it's an AOL glitch - I always view Col through an Internet Explorer browser now - you still need to have AOL open and live, but double-click IE on your pc and see if that makes a difference? f course if you're not using AOL, ignore everything I've just said
