Title: Hi, im new and expecting my baby on the 24/12 :)
Post by: carrie84uk on December 05, 2009, 10:54:41 PM
Hi everyone, my names Caroline and im getting my first cocker on xmas eve of all days lol. Shes a black working cocker with a little white bib and lip. Ive got a picture i will upload when i can figure out how  :005:

A bit about me, im 25 and married to Nick my childhood sweetheart. Together we have 4 children, 3 girls and a boy aged between 5years and 8 months. We also have a very large rabbit, 5 guinea pigs and 18 tropical fish and still have love left to give. And what better animal to give it to that a gorgeous cocker.

In honesty i am a little nervous. My husbands parents kept cockers as he was groing up so he has some expirience but i have none. I'm going into in with my eyes wide open. I feel like im awaiting the arrival of another baby. One that will indeed keep me up at night just as my children did with the addition of also chewing my slipppers  :005: I've been doing a lot of reading in preparation and thats how i found cockers online.

Any hints tips or advice would be greatly appreciated and i hope to get to know you all soon xxx

I cant believe i forgot to write her name! lol. Im calling her Daisy. I just cannot wait to bring her home. I went to see her on tuesday. The breeder is lovely. Your dogs are beautiful! I had originally wanted a blue roan. But this litter came along i went to see them and just fell in love with Daisy. Especially after her dramatic entrance into the world. She was the last one born and the only one delivered by c section. She had to resusitated bless her. Just makes me love and value her even more (get me to say that when shes eaten my boots lol)

Hi, welcome to COL, I have a black show cocker called Torin. Beware, this forum is very addictive - for the past week I've been housebound with a chest infection and I've been on here constantly.  :005: I love the name Daisy.  :D

Wow, 4 young kids and puppy! Brave woman! What made you go for a working type, was that what your hubby had before? Does worry me that your new pup is available for xmas eve...makes me wonder what the breeders motives are

Best of luck and welcome to COL!

Hello there, Welcome!

Rather you than me  I've currently got an 11 month old baby, a 7 yr old child a 2.5 yr old show cocker and a 5yr old Weimaraner and I'm on my knees trying to give the dogs enough excises and keep the baby out of the bits she shouldn't be in

I would strongly advise that you gate a bit of your house off (usually the kitchen is a good idea) that the pup can be in away from the kids so you can relax a bit and stop pup chewing the kids toys and the kids...

Lots of luck! Did your OH's family have working cockers or show types before? Do be warned that cockers can have quite a strong hunt drive so be careful with your other pets..

Wow, so many replies. Thank you for such a warm welcome. So many things i need to reply ive forgotten half of it. The kitchen is closed off with a baby gate and that will be her quiet space. Ive also got a crate for her so she can get peace. Hubbys parents had both a working cocker and show cockers. To be truthful i would have preferred a show cocker. But i just bonded with Daisy straight away she could have been a mongrel and it wouldnt have mattered  :luv:
My guineas are all in cages in the living room, even i struggle to open them so they should be safe enough. The rabbit is a house rabbit and has free run of the house at times but he also has a crate. So i will only be letting him out when Daisys in her crate sleeping.
I look forward to getting to know everyone and maybe one day going to a meet up. I dont really have a clue what im doing so i could use all the advice i can get my mits on.
As for the breeders motives i think they are fairly obvious. Hubby was made redundant 6 months ago, they have kids its coming up for christmas. All the same the mother of the pups is a much loved family pet and they are all very well taken care of. Daisy is in good health so they really are my only concerns. She KC reg ive seen her 5 generation certificate and checked her show name on the web site so im happy enough.

Hello! Welcome to COL  :D

Wow, it sounds like you already have your hands full. I'll bet Daisy will have a lot of fun in your house!

My name's Maria (another one) and I have a red/white working cocker called Bracken. No kids, Bracken is enough work for me at the moment  :005:  Looking forward to lots of pics - try and take loads, they change and grown SO fast. We've had Bracken 2 months and he's already at least 3 times bigger than the cute little roly poly puppy he was

Hello. I have Rufus, who is 5 years old and 3/4 working 1/4 show and black (registered black and white). As Hurtwood said, some workers have a very strong hunt instinct and I have one of them. My children are grown up, and we had the guineas and bunnies some years ago before we got Rufus. I would urge you to be very careful, as my cocker is very fast when hunting and rabbits are very fragile in the neck and back. I am sure you will not have an incident, but I know I would not be able to keep a rabbit in the house with my cocker. Others will have done so  successfully, so I am sure it is possible and they will have advice for you. Good luck and hope all is well over Christmas. We picked Rufus up after Christmas and New Year so the tree and decorations were down, so I wouldn't know what you face.

I am completely ignorant on this, but I wonder if you introduce the pup and rabbit young enough they will get on OK, just as dogs and cats do  might be worth starting a thread on it, as someone on here is guaranteed to have experience of it  ;)
I couldn't let my Molly anywhere near a guinea or bunny or she would bring it to me as a pressie  ph34r but obviously gundogs are trained to 'leave it' when it comes to live furries

I think your certifiable in the nicest possible way   :005:

Sound like you're well prepared though  ;)

It wouldn't be me that was prepared to start housetraining a puppy over  Christmas, doG I got Chloe on midsummers day, so lots of daylight and good weather, etc. I have no kids or other animals but I still landed up on the verge of a nervous breakdown  :005: :005:

I take my hat off to you, I really do, and I wish you a very merrry Christmas  :005: :005:

Welcome to COL, sounds like a very busy household you have there! :o :005:

There is just myself and OH at ours, plus Duggie, who is almost 7 months, and Tia, a rescue, who is 4 and a half, they are both black show Cockers. I also have 3 rescue rats and 1 rescued hamster - kept well away from the dogs! Duggie loves them and used to play with them under supervision, but I wouldn't let Tia even see them, as she has been known to catch rabbits in her last home, and recently brought us a lovely gift of a pigeon. ph34r

I think what Jo meant about your breeder's motives, is that no responsible breeder or rescue would ever rehome a dog at Christmas time, as there are just far too many who end up unwanted and kicked out. It is also a very busy time to bring a new dog into the home, and can be very frightening for them. It seems you are willing to learn all you can and to give your pup a great home, but who knows what may happen to the rest of the litter. :-\ Jo and I are both involved in rescue, and have seen it numerous times, unfortunately. :'(

Would it be possible for the breeder to hold on to Daisy for you until the hecticness of Christmas is over, then she could be introduced to the family when everything is more settled, and nice and quiet? Your Christmas day will be spent taking your new pup out to the garden every half hour, plus she will want to sleep a lot and may get upset if the children are overexcited and trying to play with her.:D

I was wondering exactly the same thing, but didn't like to say cos I guess you've got your heart set on puppy arriving for Christmas  Fiona is so right though, in some ways, it would be kinder to the puppy if you delayed picking him up for a few days; I know the kids will be high as kites looking forward to a Christmas pup, but it honestly would be easier on you, the family and the pup, if you delayed for a day or two. Please don't think I'm preaching...I didn't mean to, but am just thinking about the best things for the pup and ultimately you as a family

I do know of a Weimaraner that lives with 2 house rabbits, although he has been titled 'The worst gundog in the world' :011: :011: I've seen a video of them all milling around together it's amazing! I know a rabbit in my house would last about 2 seconds though so guess it depends on the dog. Agree that if they're introduced young there is more chance of them not being seen as pray though.

That's a good point about the pup's first day being Christmas day.. It might be extremely overwhelming dealing with that, excited children and being taken away from it's mum & litter mates all in one go... :-\

I agree with this too, sorry  :'( :-*  Its a huge, scary change for the puppy with leaving their mum & littermates, and to try to settle in a puppy over Xmas is going to be extremely difficult.  It is very unusual for any breeder to allow a puppy to go at this time of year.   I wish you good luck with your new arrival but please be aware she will need some quiet time, lots of calm patience, attention and love.  ;)  I am really sorry as i don't wish to be a spoilsport and genuinely hope it all works out for you.  ;)

Just to add on the pick up date note, most pups tend to cry a lot of the night in the early days so if he's arriving on Christmas eve you could all be up all night and absolutely shattered on Christmas day.. then get no sleep Christmas night either. If it was me I'd definitely ask the breeder to hang on to the pup until after boxing day when things have calmed down and you're not trying to do as much so can give pup lots of time for toilet training and quiet settling in. ;)

Omg im getting so confused!  :o I seemed to miss a page of this thread and ended up on another thread and replyed to it instead lol. Daisy is ready to be picked up on the 22nd but we thought it would be nice for the children to pick her up on the evening of christmas eve. Buuuuuut having said that ive taken what you have all said on board and it actually makes a lot of sense. So what i think i might do is pick her up on the 22nd instead to give her a few days to settle before the christmas day madness. Something i am wondering though is what time of day is best to pick her up? In the evening when the kids are in bed so shes got quiet to get used to the house, hubby and i? Or would that just confuse matters for her in the morning? Am i best just flinging her into the deep end so to speak and bringing her home during the day to 3 excitable children and a baby who most likely wont care  :005:

There's a sticky on how to post pics, I didn't find it easy at first, but you'll get the hang of it eventually  ;)

I really can't advise you as to the best time of day to pick up your pup; my main concern when I picked up Chloe was that it had to be first thing in the morning (we had a 5 hour drive home and I wanted to minimise the risk of her being sick on the journey - so no breakfast for her  :005:)

I really couldn't comment on how best to introduce a pup into a household with children, so I just wish you all the best of luck  ;)

I have only one son but we spent christmas day with the family (12 in total). He loved the attention but had his crate to escape if he wanted . Good look with your new addition and hope to see some pics very soon  ;)

Hiya!
I own a  golden working cocker boy called Harvey. We picked him up on the 14th of December last year. The whole chaos of xmas and new year worked wonders for him as he got to meet loads of people gradually before the run up to xmas and was the host of the century come New Year when we had a party. The timings worked brilliantly for us, however I'm not sure how easy it'll be with children as well  :005: :005:

As for small animals, I introduced Harvey to our bunny from day one, but did it very gradually and when he was in a calm state (if that exists with a working cocker :-\) We always supervised the two together. I'd personally do it when it's just you and Daisy in the house on your own as children can be a little excitable!

Can't wait to see the pics and I bet you're dead excited!! :D
She's adorable by the way!  :luv:

Hello and Welcome to the very addictive COL! :D

I have Poppy who is a 5 month old show strain blue roan cocker and Tessa who is a 5 year old working Springer. I lost my previous Cocker, Lucy earlier in the year and couldn't stand to be without the special love that cockers give hence why I now have Pops.

I was just as excited as you are when I was getting Poppy....enjoy every minute and makes sure the camera batteries are charged  ;)

Welcome to COl, looks like you'll be having fun this christmas.

Don't forget pup will be as excited as the kids and with new pressies and chocolates everywhere she looks, you'll have to be very careful to watch she doesn't eat anything that she shouldn't.

Make sure you set ground rules for everyone as it not always doggies fault when nips start happening.

Watch out for christmas tree lights too, anything thats worth chewing may well be chewed.

Good luck ;)

Yes thats something i had to rethink. Daisy was supposed to be a surprise for the kids, but a couple of nights ago we sat them down and told them she was coming as i wanted to prepare them for how to behave around her. Lol i was so naive and romantic in my original plans. But im getting there  :D

Oh my, just wondering how you are going on with your new pup who is absolutely adorable  :luv: :luv:
I found a puppy quite a shock to the system but so so worth it. I hope that you are having a good christmas.
I am Sharon by the way I have 2 show type cocker girlies a black one Bella and a blue roan Jasmine. I also have 3 cats and a stray cat that visits that I take care of!!!

Hiya Sharon, we are getting on pretty good. She goes wee wee pretty much every time we take her out. Im getting to know the signs of when she needs to go although we are still having accidents but its very early days so i dont mind at all. Shes been getting a bit chewy but ive found whenever she does if i just distract her with a toy and a bit of play that works fairly well. Christmas day a bit much for her bless her. But shes settled in nicely on the whole  :luv: I just cant wait to be able to take her for a walk  :D
