puppy is now ravenous!
« on: May 02, 2014, 08:27:57 PM »
Hi All

I switched Teddy (10 weeks on Wednesday next) onto Lilys kitchen this week. He was previously on Royal Canin Junior. He has gone from eating his meals in about 15 minutes to appearing to be ravenously hungry all the time. He is on 4 meals of 40g (with a very small amount of the tray wet lilys kitchen puppy food mixed in.

He is constantly going to the area of the kitchen where I prepare his food and howling at the worktop, returning to the bowl to see if it has magically refilled (if there was a pattern on the bowl - it would have been licked clean by now)

He is still pooing loads (about 6 or 7 a day) and today has taken 2 steps back with the toilet training (a couple of poos and a few wees in the house - had previously not done anything inside for 7 days)

I think the amount of food is right (maybe he just really loves the taste!), but I am concerned that he is not getting enough. We were feeding 160 grams of royal canin junior previously

Advice please. I don't want to starve the little fella, but don't want to overfeed also

thanks

Kirstie

I was told by my vet to feed as much as they will eat, I have to say I don't agree with this.
Yes they are using a lot of calorie at this age,  but I thought let's not start off over feeding as it could cause issues with weight later on.

He may just be really enjoying his food or is a hungry pup, the feeding guides on all food are just that, a guide, it depends on what your pup is filling there day with IE Zoomies or Sleepies!

It's not always easy to see if they are under or over weight because of there fur, I asked the vet to check my girl out for me ( I'm no expert!)

Can't find them at the moment but there are a couple of great threads on how to check if there weight is OK, what to check for etc.

I've not used this food and am no expert, hopefully someone who has will be along soon.

Hi Kirstie

I don't know if this helps but Sirius is on the same food and roughly same amount but his appetite seems to have taken a big step up. He used to take his time and wasn't that fussed. He'd rarely finish. He ate enough but definitely not greedy. Yesterday and more so today he's wolfing his food and telling me it's meal times. I wonder if they are having a growth spurt?
I'm gradually increasing the amount of LK and adding a sprinkle of kibble.

Sirius has really grown and is becoming more adventurous so I think he needs more energy to keep going. We had the first "zoomies "in the garden.  :luv:

I'm sure you're doing the right thing. We just have to learn how to listen to them  :luv:

Hi Jane

You have just described Teds changed behaviour exactly. I'm thinking Lilys kitchen is especially delicious, plus maybe the growth spurt you talked about too. How much does Sirius weigh? Is he also 9 weeks old? Might get the scales out tomorrow and see if I can weigh him.

At whatt ge is your vet giving Sirius his second set of jabs. My vet has advised waiting till 12 weeks, but just spoken with breeder and she does all hers at 10 weeks. I have to say it would be great it we can get out and about at 11 weeks as he is really bold and wants to explore and the though of waiting so much longer .....
BUT, I do want him to be safe

The most recent guidelines set by the WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) were issued last year and included a major rethink on puppy vaccinations.

The advice now is that puppy vaccinations shouldn't be done early and shouldn't finish until 14-16 weeks as until then the puppy may still have immunity in his body from his mother and it may prevent the vaccinations from working. In other words, a vaccinated puppy may not be fully protected if vaccinated when very young. I think many UK vets are now recommending vaccinations a bit later than before, although I don't know of any that finish as late as 14-16 weeks. The problem with being vaccinated so late is that the puppy potentially misses out on a lot of socialisation at a crucial stage.

The WSAVA also recommends full boosters 1 year after puppy vaccinations to ensure that the dog has full protection in case the puppy vaccinations weren't effective.

They state that the dog will then have several years immunity, probably lifetime immunity, and recommend a blood test after a further 3 years to test immunity levels rather than automatically having boosters every 3 years as they probably aren't needed.

Here are the WSAVA guidelines, worth taking 5 minutes to read http://www.wsava.org/sites/default/files/New%20Puppy%20Owner%20Vaccination%20Guidelines%20May%202013_0.pdf

Hi Kirstie

Sirius will be 10 weeks on Sunday. I haven't weighed him but I think we will do it today. He's definitely grown over the last two weeks especially his ears. :luv:

Sirius will have the second injections at 12 weeks too. So I'm trying the rucksack at the front to take him out and see things. We live in a quiet country village and I think he needs to see cars and lots of peopl. I dont want him to be nervous when he's officially allowed out in the big wide world.

Our vets are running puppy parties where pups have had their first injections can meet up before 12 weeks.

It's really reassuring to know Teds doing the same things. Thanks for posting.

Elaine's post was really useful too thank you

Ellie is 9 years old now and I used to feed her kibble (first Hills Natures Best, then I changed her to Barking Heads) with a little something mixed in such as cooked minced beef, chicken, etc.  I then read about Lily's Kitchen on this forum, sent for some tins of the wet food and mixed some of this in with the kibble instead of what I was previously adding.

Before Ellie knew about Lily's kitchen, when she knew I was preparing her meal she would come and sit in the kitchen watching me, quietly, and then eat it and go back to whatever she was doing.  Once she had Lily's Kitchen it all changed.  She now gets quite agitated when her evening meal is due and paces about around me and once the Lily's Kitchen comes out it is unbelievable.  She barks, howls and screeches until I put her bowl down and licks every conceivable part of her bowl to make sure she has not missed a morsal.  She absolutely loves this food.

I think you are right when you say your puppy just loves the taste and that is why he wants more.  It is a side effect to feeding Lily's Kitchen!

If mine are extra hungry, I give them a raw carrot to munch on.  Gives them something to do as well!

About 20 years ago one of the big companies was caught putting something addictive in their food and fined.  Looks like Lily's kitchen is having the same effect, maybe one of the tasty natural ingredients has a similar affect.  :005:

I have to say I'm reading this and having a laugh.  Saffy is almost 6 and has been totally fed on Lily's Kitchen for around the last 2 years.  During this time we have never had any problem with her scoffing any of her meals (she gets fed the Breakfast Crunch for breakfast too).  Always a spotlessly clean bowl and I get 'the stare' for about an hour before dinner. It certainly seems to be excellent food although I suppose it is a bit more expensive than some other makes.  I suspect your pup is having a bit of a growth spurt?  We often used to feed some pasta and chicken at that age too.
