walking on lead

(1/2) > >>

Averil:
Oh dear Barney had been walking beautifully considering he has only been out in the big wide world for just over a week. Since yesterday he has been trying to bite his lead, he is doing it as soon as we leave the garden gate and all up the road; eventually he forgets and walks lovely THEN he remembers  :( and starts again! I'm not really sure if this is normal practice or whether he is trying to say PLEEEEASE not another walk (we have never walked so far since having him and it is like an excersise regime for the whole family! ;D) but I'm not sure if we are over doing it  ???. Has anyone got any suggestions  :-

Hi Averil

Young puppies really don't need a lot of walking so try not to overdo it - too much exercise at a young age can put a strain on still growing bones & joints. Of course, you must get Barney out to socialise him & get him used to the sights & sounds of traffic etc but not too far ....just 10 minutes at a time a couple of times a day to begin with, then gradually building up the time as Barney gets bigger. Practice lead walking in the garden for short periods as well as outside, but don't expect too much straight away - attempting to chew the lead is par for the course with a young puppy & he will grow out of it in time & with careful training. He probably walked beautifully to begin with because he was unsure & was taking all the new sights & sounds in, but now he has gained in confidence & is ready for some fun :)

Hi Averil,

Barney sounds like he's doing pretty well. Last night at our puppy class an owner had the same problem although her dog was 18weeks. She recommended spraying bitter apple on the lead to break her of the habit.
Its harmless apparently.
I agree with Jane a 10-15 min walk is great at this age. Tilli is 5 months and we do a 20 min romp around the local football field. After which she sleeps for 2 hours.

Hope this helps, Charlie

Averil:
:D thanks Jane and Charlie, I think we were over doing it slightly but who doeasn't want to show their new puppy to the world 8) :) 8). We have reduced the walks to 2x10/15 minutes; one am and one pm.
I am a little worried though because I have just booked a weeks holiday (what will i do with no internet access) to Dawlish Warren in Devon and Barney can come too; I am now worried about the amount of walking we might do but I suppose he can always rest in my little boy's buggy ;)

Hi Averil, make your boy walk and let Barney travel in comfort ;D ;D ;D Hope you have a good time
