Weighted down dog found dead in river
The RSPCA is investigating after a cocker spaniel was found dead in a river with a 10kg dumb bell attached to its neck.
The tan coloured bitch was discovered in the water by people walking their dogs by the River Test at Nursling, Southampton, Hants, last Sunday.
A post mortem examination is due to take place to see if the the dog drowned or it was already dead before the weight was attached and the animal thrown in the river as a sick joke.
RSPCA inspector Alan Barnes said: "We are awaiting the results of the post mortem but the circumstances around this find appear to be suspicious.
"If this dog has died through drowning, then it would have suffered an horrific death and it is deeply upsetting that someone may have committed such a cruel act.
"We urge anyone who might know something to get in touch with us as soon as possible."
