How Much Should I Feed My Puppy?
« on: April 14, 2008, 05:44:37 PM »
I have a 5 and a half month old puppy who will soon be 6 months old. But I am not sure if I am feeding him the right amount of food as he always seems to be hungry as he begs and whines when ever we are eating. At the minute I feed him 5 egg cups of dry puppy food 2 times a day. Is this the right amount of food to be feeding him? And is it normal for him to always seem hungry.

P.S. I know that dogs beg but am still not sure if it is right!  :005:

How much you should feed depends on the dog's weight and the type of food. If you look on the side of the bag there will be guidelines there which tell you how much to feed dogs of different weights. These are guidelines though and not exact instructions. I use them as a rough guide and then tweak the amounts for each of my dogs depending on their condition and activity levels.

He would maybe do better with an extra meal a day. I still feed my 7 month pup 3 times a day. I think its usually recommended to do that until 6 months anyway. Also, the instructions on the side of food bags is never high enough to me. You could probably feed him a normal sized cup of food three times a day. See if that helps....

5 eggs cups a day doesn't sound very much, whatever you are feeding him  :-\

What does your puppy look like? Does he look thin? Can you easily feel his ribs?  5 egg cups doesn't seem alot. It is common for cockers to always be hungry for food, mine would eat a whole bag if I let them :005:

I took it to mean it was 5 egg cup-fuls twice a day so 10 in total although I agree that it's an odd way to measure food, you'd probably be better off using a mug or a measuring cup.
