Hi, my husband Dave built our whelping box. He used tongued and grooved around the sides, back and front and plywood for the base. The front is removable for when pups old enough so that they don,t start climbing over the front and get hurt or left out on their own. Dave also put a pig rail around the inside of the box so that none of the babies can get hurt if they get behind mum. When the babies get to aroung five weeks old i put them in a hyware basket as this is when they are starting to find their teeth  :) . This also means that the whelping box has stayed almost  ;) chew free. There is a partial photo of our whelping box in the puppy photo gallery page four. Hope this has been some help, i,m hopeless with blueprints and wouldn,t no where to start regarding building whelping boxs, my hubbie is so handy with anything like this and has saved us loads of money  :D  as the bought ones can be very expensive. Mind you hubbie always insists that he will build it if i need anything, lucky me!  ;) .

Our whelping box is rather unconventional - when Fern was due to whelp we were dismantling an old wardrobe and had taken the top cupboard section off while we wrestled with the rest. Fern comendeered the top section and would not be moved - so there we are! Addition of bedding later and she had chosen her own nest box!

It is long enough for her to lie out stretched in and wide enough for her to stretch her legs out! Unfortunatly it has seen better days so we are having to replace it for Willow (although her last litter was born in the wardrobe whelping box!) So we are off to B&Q this week - and we are going to copy the old box! Well they seem to like it!

Thank you Louie and clare.

well I think I can figure out the  proper size of the whelping box.

Let me post some picture of the whelping box when I finish it. I'd like to get some advice whether it's a good one or not.

Thanks again for the tips.

I found this site  which lists lots of links to whelping box design pages etc - it's not a Cocker site but you might find it useful :)

Building the new box failed miserably - we got the old one out to measure and willow sat in and refused to move!!!!! So i think the old one is staying a bit longer! We did manage to get her out of it long enough to tart it up and scrub it down! Unfortunatly fern likes it too - so i have one box full of two cockers!

Isn't the entrance a little bit narrow?

I should have thought of a pregnant bitch before I had made it. how stupid I am!

What if she gets stuck.....I don't wanna imagine.. :(

My wife is just happy that she got a whelping box.  I just pray she never find it's narrow.  :D

Ummmmm.......they do get rather wide when pregnant, plus heavy so she won't be able to jump over the side

You might like to widen the door slightly - the hight looks fine though!
