grabbing a toy when someone comes home
« on: April 16, 2012, 08:41:19 PM »
when i cpme home oscar does all the usual tail wagging running around greeting and i can;t help but give him loads of fuss but he always has to run and get a toy and hold it in his mouth. Would this be becuase he thinks he may nip me in exitement as he does ppund me with his tail wagging and head burrowing. So much better than the oh's greeting  :005:.

Our eldest will do this.. We kinda taught her to do it to curb excitement when we got home, on a couple of occasions she greeted us with her toy in her mouth, so we taught her "bear" meant that toy, when we would get home we would ask her to find "bear" - stopped her jumping up, and being all excited and stopped her barking too.
As she has gotten older and her mouth has gotten bigger she can now bark with bear in her mouth though it is muffled  :005:

Cockers are gundogs - it is in their nature to "present" something.  ;)

Knew there was a link with the breed but that sums it up very simply

Yep Maggie does this as well... I will give her something if she can't find something immediately because she gets more worked up looking for "anything" otherwise...

Have always wondered why Sal does this..... even if I pop to the corner shop for three minutes, I still get presented with a stag bar or IKEA rat on my return.  :luv:

no a lot of dogs do this on greeting people and its nothing to do with them thinking they may nip you in excitement (dogs don't think like that) - 2 of my dogs love to pick things up and wander around with them in excitement (one a cocker and one a spanielX)

My friend's Cocker does this too, it always feels like he's bringing you a present to welcome you home.

Barney does this too. Often it will be one if my walking boots as they are nearby, and in his excitement, he will usually whack me across the shins with it.

Flo also does this, as Karma said it's their nature to present.....and I think it's very sweet to be presented with a chewed up smelly toy when I come home.
