Chocolate Coat has no Shine :-(
« on: August 22, 2012, 03:12:59 PM »
Hi All
Well one of my boys is a choc and tan and has quite a curly coat so I have him clipped across the back, but still has skirt and feathers
Anyway, have been raw feeding now for about 2 months and my other two boys' coats are much silkier (golden and roan sable) but not the choc and tan  :'( is it impossible to get a shine on a chocolate coat, especially one that is curly and clipped or is he just going through a coat transformation whilst he is getting used to raw?
Are there any extras I can give to improve it or will it never happen?
They already have oily fish and Natural Instinct which contains oil
Any suggestions, help would be appreciated

Is it ok to give extra Salmon oil as NI food already has it in?

As long as his poo is the only thing thats affected by it  ;), then I'll give it a go!

Although it might have an effect on the back parts of his coat... :o

I don't think it's food related - Jarv's coat on his back is shiny and a rich brown when he's clipped and as soon as it grows out it gets fluffy and dry and gingery at the ends  ;)  He has yumega every day  :D

Here he is just after I clipped his back

and looking scruffy and gingery (with a proper sleek ginger boy  :lol2: :luv:)

Thanks Helen....Cooper's coat is exactly the same, goes gingery at the ends when it grows out  >:(
My only concern is usually when clipped he is a deep chocolate colour and has a shine to it....this time its a light brown with no shine
Just wonder if I've done something wrong when clipping....I've used these clippers 2-3 times but have not oiled them at all (not sure if I'm supposed to and how often) and did not bath him beforehand

Maybe his coat is just a bit sunbleached and a bit dusty?   I shouldn't think the clipper oiling would make much difference but I could be wrong (and I would oil them anyway)

I do rate the Yumega so you could give that a go  ;)

I thought Jarv's coat looked a bit dull until he went out into the sun after clipping - he looked shiny then  :lol2:

yeah, thats what I was thinking...maybe a good bath first would have helped
I think I'll oil the clippers as need to tidy him up anyway and give him a good bath
I am open to adding oil to his food, but as Natural Instinct already has Salmon Oil in it, do you think it would be ok to add more....is there such a thing as overdosing on salmon oil? (other than perhaps making him a bit loose)

I tend to use Yumega which is made from coldpressed golden flax oil and starflower oil - he is half kibble fed and that is a fish based one.
