Title: I Am Worried Abot Barney
Post by: paulb on April 23, 2005, 12:16:10 AM: For people who dont know we are expecting to bring Barney our beautiful chocolate roan boy home in 13 days time.

at 11.30 this evening i switched the machine on and found an email from my breeder asking me to get in touch with her it is nothing to panic about but she needs to speak to us(damm my phone had ran out of power).

i have rattled of a couple of emails str8 away asking her to ring me anytime day or night as i dont think i will sleep tonight.

i am so worried we have fallen in love with him already, he has a lovely calm temperment.

he was due to have his first jabs and check up this week so i hope it isnt anything to do with that.

i dont know what to do. :(

its feels just so difficult,

i feel helpless, 5 past one in the morning cant sleep thinking about it, i think it will be a long night ahead.

i keep rehersing worse case case senario's about making decsisons, i know it sounds crazy but i feel so atached to him already.

I am very, very tired!!! :blink: .

I did speak to our breeder.

she went to the vets who picked up that barney had a turquoise eye and a brown eye, vet checked him thouroughly nothing wrong or to worry about, he wasnt at all concearned with the eyes and felt it was a cosmetic issue.

our breeder ( who has been so so helpful and thoughful) did say to us we could withdraw from buying barney, she has a little blue roan boy left in the litter, we couldnt even think of that, we love him so much already and if its just cosmetic it will prob mean we cant show him :lol: i had no :lol: intention to anyway.

i feel relieved but still have that niggling feeling in the back of my mind, does anyone have experience of this. someone said it can lead to deafnrss in cats,also even if it waS serious i dont know whether i could not have him.

any advice to give anyone.

We had our Lab Nell for a day, when she was diagnosed with a heart murmur, our breeder offered to take her back and replace her :o there was no way she was going anywere even after only having her for one day, we were far to attached, she's still here and doing fine :D it doesn't seem to affect her at all yet, she's five in a couple of months. :D

It happens, and often it isn't related to anything - he's been thorughly chewcked by the vet Im surre he'll be fine.
He is obviously going to be adored to bits!

My computer' sbeen down for a couple of days so I just picked up your news. Gosh I'm relieved to hear Barney's fine. I don't think eye colour matters at all as there are no other health issues associated with this. I think you can relax and enjoy your babe. We are so looking forward to seeing your pictures of him. And relieved to hear from those who seem to know, that it probably isn't associated with deafness in dogs (in cats, I think it would only be deafness in the ear on that side anyway, the other would be fine).

Actually I think it's really cute. It will be lovely to see pics of his eyes sometime.

Did the breeder really not notice this though?

I'm pleased that after your sleepless night there is nothing serious wrong. If it is any consolation, we have just been to see Bob again today and one of his brother's has got one eye a different colour to the other (one light blue, one dark blue). Again, there is nothing wrong, just a cosmetic issue and he really looks quite sweet because of it. Just think how special he will be because of it!

Eye colour changes gradually in puppies - they all start off with blue eyes which gradually change to brown as time goes on so this probably explains why Paul's breeder has only just noticed Barney's eyes. Different coloured eyes (one brown, one blue) do crop up from time to Cockers & generally it's just a cosmetic "problem" if you can call it a problem. There is an increased risk of deafness in blue eyed dogs as well as cats but as Barney has had a thorough check up by a vet I'm sure he is A-OK :) Deafness does occur in Cockers as in many breeds with the spotting gene (white markings) but is not common.

The strange thing is when there are two different colour eyes is that you tend to look from one eye to the next more than you would with eyes of the same colour :blink:

Just picked up on this thread - I think Barney looks gorgeous and if it was me, I wouldn't worry at all.

I know how you feel though, two weeks after picking Scooby up from the breeder she phoned to tell me that his bottom canines are growing at the wrong angle and he may need them out. I was really cross with her and upset that my baby wasn't perfect. The vet has said he will most probably need one of them out, or maybe even them both.

Thing is, if the breeder had told me about this before, would I have had him. I don't know. Unlike you though, I didn't see Scooby before he was 8 weeks old as he was promised to someone else and I was offered him on the last minute. I literally went to see him and brought him home that day. If she had of told me when I had got there I probably would have still brought him home cause I fell in love instantly :P

Anyway, good luck with Barney - your little Ziggy Stardust :lol:

If Pepsi had had different colour eyes we would still have had her too. It's only been three weeks, she's turned our lives and home upside down but I wouldn't give her back - no way!

It has been amazing the amount of people who have experienced dogs with different coloured eyes, it has been so helpful relieving my anxiety, i am glad barney is different that i didnt take up the offer to exchange him like a faulty jumper for a perfect version.

as from tommorow there are only 8 days left until he comes home, the cage is set up in the kitchen already as are his bowls , he now has his own cupboard, which the whole family delight in looking into at regular periods :lol: :lol:

Well, I know he's a bit strange, but he is definitely a one off and no-one will forget him!!

I would guess that with your baby it is simply a pigmentation glitch, and it makes him so much of an individual ..... everyone who meets him will never get him confused with any other Cockers will they !!

Bramble has quite 'milk chocolate' coloured eyes as opposed to Barley's dark brown ones. One of Brambles eyes has an area of darker pigmentation (just a little splotch really) but it all means that he is an individual!

I will be interested to follow this thread and see if anyone else (apart from Collie owners, that is!) have dogs with different coloured eyes - it may well be that his blue eye will change over time, and then won't you be disappointed !!!

what is funny is when Alice is tired she shouts she doesn't want Barney (her tune changes the minute she has had some rest.

Cockers are good at finding things, you can't remeber for the life of you why you put something down and now can't find it, then in trots little cocker with said object in mouth which is now all chewed and guey :lol: . It seems to have gone quite quick, I didn't have the luxury of a COL fix 5yrs ago, can't believe it's been 5yrs since our first dog Lottie, it has flown by :blink: . You'll feel like you've had him forever when he first sets foot in your home :D .

And NEVER leave an unread newspaper down...our don't get weed on but do get chewed! AND our copy of The Perfect Puppy has been chewed. Not sure that was innocent puppy fun though! :blink:

From experience I would say you can expect about 4 months or so of this type of reaction - my daughter was three when Molo came home, and it was impossible to explain to her why he: nipped, needed to sleep, jumped up, didn't keep still etc etc :rolleyes: Teaching her how to behave calmly and gently with him was hard work too :ph34r:

Once they come out the other side of this phase though, it is delightful to see them play together; they certainly rule our household together :rolleyes:

Even at 7, we had trouble with Ben at first. We had spent ages trying to tell him that puppies need a lot of sleep etc, might (MIGHT???) nip, etc, etc, and we thought he understood pretty well.

But we found that he was quietly a bit disappointed with his pup for a while (I'd say a few weeks or more) because he hadn't really understood the implications of all that. Even now he does still try to poke/wake Buddy up if he fancies a bit of playtime.

Just be prepared for that, you've got two younger than Ben, it might feel a bit like a war zone for a while!!

Ever end? Its only just starting :lol:

Alfie has cost us a fortune :)

Having a downstairs loo put in so the parents could stay with us at christmas instead of us going there.

Having to buy a new fridge freezer to make room for the plumbing of the new loo.

A new leather sofa cos hed totally covered the old one in muck and I couldnt get it clean

A brand new pair of shoes which he ate within 24 hours of them being in the house

New set of towels so I had plenty of old ones :)

And now a bigger mortgage so we can move to a house with a bigger garden

so i guess it never stops really :)

we look at our two and think what is poor barney letting himself in for, but then i look at how Oliver and Alice are with the Rabbit and G Pigs, how calm they can be and how gentle, so there is a hope.

i cant belive it what is tonight going to be like, i am off for a week, needless to say i am going to be working late tonight so hopefully that should pass some time.

he had a good long play at 11 last night went for a final wee poped into his crate and slept untill 6 am which was more than i did,

he sleeps a lot but when he is awake he is up for it big time.

i hear him waking so gotta go, speak soon.

My friend has a working collie with a blue eye and she is just stunning. People stop her all the time and comment on how beautiful her eyes are.
