Title: where does your pup sleep?
Post by: *Yvonne* on March 20, 2010, 06:00:22 PM
The title is self explanatory  :005:

Are they in a cage?
Do they sleep upstairs?
Do they just sleep in their bed free to use the living room etc?

Ben is sleeping in a cage at the moment but i don't want him in there forever, when do you start the transition to just sleeping in the living room etc?
My house is open plan so have no door between kitchen and living room/dining room etc so can't let him just have the run of the kitchen.

Any advise???
Thanks  :D :D

My house is the same and bobby is nearly 6 months old. We have had a cage for him and for the first few nights we left him with the cage door open and he was fine so we have taken away the cage. He doesnt seem to mind where he sleeps so long as he has his cushion. He has never really chewed so hopefully he wont start now  ;) good luck!

My pup Monty 10 weeks sleeps in my room on the floor (on a cushion ) cos thats where Belle 12mths sleeps, In your situation I would carry on as you are until Ben is completely clean and when you can trust him not to chew anything :-\

Freddie - 5 months - sleeps in his cage in the kitchen. I would like to let him have the option of cage or bed in the kitchen but he chases our cat who has to come in the cat flap in the night. I don't know whether to just let them sort themselves out - at the moment, the cat won't come in if he can see Freddie the other side of the cat flap. I don't think I will ever give Freddie the run of the downstairs - we can shut our kitchen door - am I mean?

Alfie sleeps in his crate in the kitchen and thats where he will stay until we can trust him to go all night without doing anything ;).

No you're not mean at all!! Meg has always slept downstairs in the kitchen and she loves it - some peace and quiet :luv:. Alfie will too when he's finished with the crate. Meg went through a phase of sleeping in my room but would never settle.

I suppose if they have been used to sleeping downstairs from a puppy then they wont know any different will they :dunno: :D xxxx

Mason is 20 months old next week and he still sleeps in his crate in the kitchen.  He will rest in the living room but once he has had enough for the night he takes himself off to his crate for the night.  I can't see me ever being able to take his crate away  :luv:

We leave ben out of his crate if we go out, no longer than 2 hours though and he has never has any incidents (The fact we move most items out of the way helps) he seems to just sleep for most of it and uses the paper we put down in the kitchen for toilet.

I don't know what to do with him i suppose the only way to see how it goes is to try him    ph34r

sheepscheeks you are not cruel at all, it is what suits you and your surroundings best  :D

Thanks for the replies ladies as always very helpful  ;)

When Honey was a pup, she had a crate, but never seemed keen on it.
We never shut the door, and she would pull all of her bedding out and "nest" elsewhere... so we changed to a bed quite quickly (we could restrict her to one room, so no problems with getting hold of stuff she shouldn't!).

However she had real issues settling at my in-laws house... so following advice on here we reintroduced the crate - she now sleeps in this with the door shut at night and has been great.  Through the day (if we are out) she has the dining room and conservatory, as she would chew stuff in the lounge (and bark at passers by) if she had access there.... She loves her crate now, and will head in there if she is feeling insecure about anything....  :luv:

Must admit ben has a bed in the living room that he sleeps in but if there are alot of people in the house he goes in his cage.
He is fine in his cage and sleeps well, maybe i should just leave the door open on it and see how he goes.

Bomber is in a crate in the dining room (quietest room in the house) and loves it in there. At the moment he can't seem to settle in the living room in the evenings (keeps doing flat out circuits around the room and over the furniture  :005: ) so he tends to go to his crate for his quiet time too and never worries.

Eventually I would like to reclaim my dining room (his crate is huge!) but for the time being I don't trust him enough to be free in the house, and he really seems to enjoy his own space away from the hussle and bustle anyway, so he will remain crated.

We started with Saffi in a crate with the door shut over night, then progressed to a pen with the crate in it with the door of the crate open (from about 12 weeks once she had got the hang of house training).

She is now nearly 6 months old and we have just decided to ditch the pen. We will keep the crate for the time being.  I don't think she will ever have the freedom of the living room though - she is too fond of the sofa! ph34r
We may buy her a dog basket and see if she prefers it to her crate - a crate isn't exactly a thing of beauty is it! :005:

Penny is nearly 11 months and has always slept in her bed in the kitchen and seems fine. She never sleeps in her bed through the day, just on the sofas , the chairs, or sunbathes on the floor.

Fraser 9 1/2 months used to be in a hard sided crate with the door closed, but now he sleeps by my bed in his own bed, but behind a wing of a pen so he won't go after the cat in the middle of the night. I should try one night to see if maybe sleepytime is catsafe time, but I'm pretty sure Fraser would get up and chase the cat as cat wanders around a lot in the night.

I think I must be a meanie!  :005:

Dylan is crated every night and also when I go to do the school run/shopping etc. I'd not let him have the run of the house yet, although he is only 14.5 weeks old :)

He's never been upstairs, and his crate is in the living room. Occasionally he'll go into his crate without us asking, but he much prefers to sleep in a sunny area on the carpet in the lounge, or on the sofa  >:D :luv: :luv:

I am sure in time we'll let him have more freedom, but not whilst he is still occasionally producing piddle puddles!  :005:

Selby sleeps in his crate in the lounge, and will not sleep anywhere else, we have tried and he just bites and thinks its playtime, I am so longing for a cuddle, the door is left open all day unless we go out, which is not very often without him, I think he feel secure in there and when he steals things thats were he heads for and thinks if he cant see us then we cant see him he loves his crate.

I think i will leave Ben in his crate at the moment, he isn't wee'ing at night anymore which is positive but i don't want him to get bored and go tearing around the livingroom etc.

Archie who is 7 months sleeps in his bed with a load of dog blankets in the kitchen and seems to love it. However he never sleeps in his dog bed during the day just on the sofa's or the rug or he relaxes by the front door. lol.

Ginny sleeps in her closed crate every night in my bedroom and is happy in there. I have it closed so she cant chase the cats as they come and go through the pet flap during the night. Also I am planning a week away when she will stay with my Dad in Sept so i think her crate routine will be security for her and help her settle at night in a different house.....I also think it may help if i take her on hols with me at some point and want her to settle somewhere new or need to leave her in a holiday cottage or caravan for short periods. She also likes to go in her crate if I am hoovering as she hates the noise  Through the day she sleeps on the sofa and chairs. I have just taken her out of her playpen when i go out and leave her in the kitchen with a fleecy bed....not sure if she prefers the pen tho  :-\. I'm going to keep her restricted to certain areas in my absence until I'm absolutely sure I can trust her not to get up to mischief as once bad  habits are formed they may be hard to break.

Charlie and Holly sleep where ever they want to if I am in in the day. On their beds in the kitchen if I am not. And at night on whichever bed they want to!- Usually mine! And if its really cold..........................!

errrr my crate has been up for the past 7 years now - mine still sleep in it (door open) when they want and the cats either sleep in it or on top of it (there's a fleecy bed there) :005:

Marco sleeps on my bed, we used to have a bed in the kitchen for him but he would often whine and always wee. Since he has come upstairs he will go from 10pm - 6.30am dry with no accidents at all and he just settles down and keeps my feet warm  :luv:

He is 6 months on Thursday, am now considering giving him the run of the house whilst we are out as he likes to settle on the sofa and sleep may give him a bit more freedom as he does sometimes bark on the 2 days I am in work (as my neighbour told me)!!!

Hector now nearly 11 months sleeps in his crate in the kitchen - we bought it to help with house training but he is really happy in it so the plan is to keep it.  It is his own space / den and at night it is covered.

It seem to be a instinctive trait for dogs to seek out areas that provide 'protection' Hector will squeeze under the telephone seat/ armchair /anything etc that makes them feel enclosed &  protected

I like using the crate as it makes travelling with Hector easy - when he comes up to London he has a duplicate crate which means he adjusts quickly

However I am sure he would prefer to sleep on my bed but as much as I love my mud magnet spanner spaniel an unhygenic bed is not an option for me!!

Olly (nearly 8 months) spent his first night on his bed next to ours - he was brilliant and has been ever since.  He has since made it up onto the bed, but sometimes when he wants time to himself he takes himself downstairs and sleeps on the sofa - he does whatever he pleases!!

We have had Alfie for a week now (9 weeks old) - he too spent his first night on his bed next to ours and has quickly progressed and is now sleeping on our bed, lying on his back with his legs in the air (and snoring!!) - he's a little sweetie.  As long as one of us takes him out for a wee in the night he's fine (I keep thinking this is too good to be true) but I'm hoping he will continue to take a lead from Olly and learn from him - fingers crossed, so far so good!!

Could have a problem though as Alfie gets bigger, either myself or OH could end up sleeping on the floor - wouldn't have it any other way though. Anything for my boys!!

I wasn't going to post on this because I felt embarrassed lol but seeing has we are not the only ones now  :005:...we had cleared out the cupboard under the stairs (not a small cupboard) it's in the kitchen, and taken the door off and put a child safety gate on and a comfy bed, water bowl, toys etc for Poppy. She spent one night in there, she howled most of the night and then at 6am we came down to what I can only describe what looked like an exploded poo bomb, absolutely everything was covered in poo :020: Poppy looked so sorry for herself all wet and covered in poo  :020: We cleaned up and Poppy had her first bath in the sink cause she was so tiny  :luv: She had come to us with a bad tummy upset and she was needing to poo about every hour so we decided it was only fair to sleep downstairs on an inflatable air bed on the living room floor so we could get up to let her out when she needed the toilet, 2 weeks later we finally saw an end to her poorly tummy after 4 visits to the vets, but then how could we after 2 weeks shut her away and go upstairs to sleep we felt it wouldn't be fair, then after 3 wks the air bed got a puncture, so we went and bought another, then 2 wks later that one punctured so we decided 5 weeks sleeping on living room floor was long enough, we were dreading leaving her but she was a little angel   she cried for about 10 mins and that was it, and the added bonus was she house trained really fast so it turned out perfect  :D

Louis (almost 10 months)  - at night and when I nip out to shops sleeps in his cage with door firmly shut - cage is in utility room. Alice sleeps in cage in utility room at night but has run of the house even when I am out during the day.  When I am in during the day they 'sleep' wherever I happen to be doing things - study, sitting room, kitchen etc - but they do have a preference for sofas.

well my dog sleeps any where every where in my house.... no issues with her for sleep and play.... but when she needs to go to pee... she knows where to go.... veranda door must be opened other wise.... she is really wise to spread her pee around house.......she is 3.5 months old
